“I’m heading to bed Twilight” said Spike exhausted from a long days work.
“Alright Spike” said Twilight, preoccupied by the task at hand. Twilight looked through her telescope at the many new summer constellations that had appeared almost overnight. It just didn’t seem possible that a pony like Twilight could look through the same piece of glass for hour upon hour until the rays of the sun spoiled the beloved sight that was the heavens above.
But tonight was different. Twilight had waited for this phenomenon all year, and she wasn't about to miss it yet. Every year six days after the first summer sun had dropped over the horizon a bright aura would light the night sky. With Twilights sharp senses she was eager to observe, and document this phenomenon herself, hopefully with no distractions.
“Come on just a little more”. whispered Twilight as if taunting the sun to go down faster.
Twilight quickly turned one of the knobs on her telescope just to get a better view of a particular star.
The night was cool, and utterly silent except for a few minor breezes here, and there.
Just as the final light in Ponyville seemed to go out the sun finally set. It was like magic as soon as the sun fell upon the horizon the heavens above were blessed with the most impressive light show twilight had ever seen.
Twilight was lost in words. she had never seen anything more beautiful in her life. Those colors, some of which she had never seen before. She’d just dare Rarity to come close to one of those magnificent streaks of light.
One by one the streaks of light passed with no hesitation. Twilight was quick to write down as much scientific jargon as her parchment could hold, and just as fast as it had began it was over.
Twilight had felt a little empty inside, such an amazing experience. To bad it had to end so quickly Spike would have loved it, Hmph, maybe next year.
Twilight had just finished the last sentence of her work when an uneasy feeling creeped up her back and her head. Feeling the imbalance Twilight moved into a more comfortable position when a bright blue streak of light appeared out of nowhere. Twilight soon noticed and became utterly infatuated with the mysterious object, but something was different about this light. This light was much less vibrant than the others, and did not stretch over the horizon like the previous lights. Then Twilight noticed an attribute that this light possesed that none of the others did. A coma this, light was a comet.
“A COMET!!!” boomed Twilight. She quickly hushed herself remembering the baby dragon that had just gone to sleep.
“a comet” whispered Twilight quickly writing down exactly what she saw.
“Blue Coma”
“Red Nucleus”
“Orange Tail”
Hmm interesting colors for a comet of that size, but what really amazed Twilight was the resilience of the comet. Comets of that size naturally burn up a lot faster than this. Twilight quickly pulled her telescope lense closer to get a better look. The comet didn’t seem to be
decreasing in size, or mass at all.
“What kind of rock is that”. Twilight muttered to herself eager to keep a distinct watch over this seemingly bizarre object.
Twilight could have starred at that “comet” forever, but her gaze was suddenly interrupted by the roof of a house near the outskirts of town. But where sight failed sound came through all Twilight could hear was a loud:
CRASH!!!
Twilight was astounded no comet that small could have possibly make it to the surface without breaking up. She had questions that needed answering, and that comet was the key. Without a moment to spare Twilight flew through her front door and bolted in the direction of the comets impact.
Twilights heart raced with the obsession of finding that comet, however while she was running like there was no tomorrow she couldn't help but notice every light in Ponyville start to illuminate the streets. The cries of annoyed ponies being woken from a good nights sleep was awful but little did it deter Twilight from her goal. As she ran she couldn't help but notice Rainbow Dash coming up right behind her.
“Hey Twilight” yelled Rainbow Dash
Twilight took no heed to Rainbows words only to have Rainbow land right in front of her.
“Rainbow get out of the way” yelled Twilight in response
“Not until you tell me whats going on here” Rainbow Dash sounded very concerned as if the whole world depended on her knowing.
“But I don’t know what’s going on, at least not yet”.
Rainbows heart sank out of all ponies Rainbow knew she thought Twilight would have the answer.
“Rainbow follow me I know where the comet hit” said Twilight as she gradually accelerated in speed. Rainbow Dash quickly followed.
“Wait what comet?” said Rainbow practically begging for answers.
“I was doing some research earlier this evening about a strange phenomenon that only happens once a year and I-”.
Suddenly Twilight was interrupted by two familiar faces Rarity, and Pinkie Pie were trailing right behind them.
“Hey Twilight” said Pinkie
“Hello Twilight “ said Rarity
“Hi girls” said Twilight
“Do you know what’s going on Twi” said Pinkie trying to make sense of why she was dreaming about cake frosting, and then the cake mysteriously blew up (ok so not much out of the ordinary).
“As a matter of fact i do” said Twilight “anyways as i was saying I was doing some research on an extraordinary phenomenon that only happens this night every year, and this “comet” so to speak came out of nowhere”.
“So that was a comet”. said Rarity struggling to keep up.
“Yes”
Seeming like an eternity the four friends finally arrived at their destination only to find a large crowd of ponies clustered around a large crater. If Twilights measurements were correct the crater exceed a diameter of thirty feet.
The crater was surrounded by nothing but scorched earth, and smoke.
The four friends eagerly pushed passed the large sum of ponies blocking the view of the center of the massive crater.
“Hot” said Pinkie
“I do agree” said Rarity
Amongst the murmurs of the large crowed Twilight decided to claim what she had been longing for. She took one step forward, and jumped back in a quick yelp of pain.
“OW HOT HOT HOT!!!”
“You okay Twilight “ said the familiar voice of Fluttershy as she hovered over the large crowd determined to keep her distance from the menacing crater before here.
“Yeah I’m ok “ said Twilight feeling the rush of pain slowly subsiding.
“Hey Rainbow you wouldn't mind clearing that smoke would you”.
“Sure thing Twi”.
Rainbow slowly circled the smoke cloud steadily increasing in velocity as she created a small vortex to clear the smoke. When Rainbow was done all that remained was a bit of smoke at the bottom of the crater covering the object Twilight had hoped to recover.
Twilight new she had to find what mysterious object that comet was composed of. She took a step forward, slower than before as to not burn herself again. Suddenly she felt a hoof on her shoulder, and a voice she could recognize from a crowd ten times the size as this one.
“You sure you should be doin this sugarcube”. said Applejack with the most concerned of voices. Twilight quickly spun around startling a few unlucky mares in the crowd.
“Yes Applejack I know exactly what I’m doing” said Twilight as to calm her best friend when at the same time she thought I hope.
Twilight slowly stepped closer towards the center of the crater, and her friends not to far behind.
Twilight approached the cloud of smoke, and gently wafted the unwanted smoke away. As she did so she noticed a faint glow to the smoke, but this was no ordinary glow, and this was no ordinary comet fragment.
What Twilight saw shook her to the core.
“a pony”
