1: A Colt Named Snails and Her
The school bell rang and I rushed home. Today was a special day. Dad would be working late, which meant I would be home alone for four whole hours! I could do anything I wanted as long as I cleaned up before she got home.
As I approached my front door I ignited my magic to pull out my key and barely stopped at the door before rushing inside. As I stopped in the doorway to lock the door behind me I caught a glimpse of the hall mirror and frowned at the golden colored colt with a sea-green mane left to grow unruly and a cutie mark of a snail with a purple shell. Then I remembered my mission. I had to enjoy the time I had to myself, it was only once a week that I could get away with it.
I dashed upstairs to the bedroom with a sign that said "Snails" proclaiming it was my room. Only that's not my name. It's what my parents named me, but it's not my name. It's that colts name, the one in the mirror. Only the mirror lies. The mirror says that colt is me, but I am not Snails. I don't know who I am, not really. But I know I'm not a colt named Snails, that's just not me. I left my school bag in that colts room and went farther down the hall.
This door did not have a name on it, but I knew whose room it was. Dad told me not to go in there, he doesn't know that I have been in there. He doesn't know that I know whose room it is. I walked in and the room is still the same as it's always been. The walls are painted a light green that would have so complimented her mane, pictures are propped on top of the ornate dresser showing Dad standing next to a woman who looks a lot like me, or sometimes one of them holding me as a foal, a large bed covered in a purple comforter with a flower design. I think Dad comes in here when he gets lonely, just to remember her. Dad says she died not long after I was born, I don't remember her. Only the stories that Dad will sometimes tell.
After taking in the room I moved over to my objective. Hidden in the closet was a treasure trove of beautiful dresses. I imagine they must have belonged to her. They are all so beautiful and each one was more beautiful than the last. I pulled out my favorite, a blue flower-print dress with a light green bow in the middle that perfectly matches my mane. I pull the dress on over my head and give a smile as I look into the mirror on the dresser. I use magic to style my hair. It's only recently that I've learned to control my magic, it took a lot of practice but it was worth it. Now I can straighten up my hair and curl it just like hers. I apply a bit of eye shadow and some pink lipstick. Finally, in the top drawer of the dresser I find a jewelry box with her cutie mark emblazoned on it, a sparkling pink glass horseshoe. I opened it and, selecting a pearl necklace, placed it around my neck. Looking in the mirror once more I gave a giggle. The colt named Snails was gone from the mirror, all that remained was a young filly who looked so like her mother.
