Choices for a better life
Room 202
Previous ChapterRoom 202 and The Blacksmith
By I_Am_Iron_Ore
You jolt upwards. You’re in an unfamiliar room, and a pair of white curtains are open, telling in sunlight through a small window. The room is completely void of furniture except for a small table to the right of the bed you’re on and a radio placed on top of it. You’re not wearing any clothes… accept for a white hospital gown. A few chairs sit adjacent from the bed and you can now clearly make out Vinyl asleep in one of them, a river of drool hanging down the side of her mouth. You attempt to sit up, but a gentle hand pushes you back down.
“It’s best you stay in bed.” Comes a soft voice. You look up and see the white blur from before, but now completely distinguishable. The blur is a mare with a white coat and a pink mane and tail. she is wearing a nurses outfit and nurses cap with a red cross on it.
“That Amplifier weighed around 375 pounds. You’re lucky it didn’t crush you worse.” She continues. You go into a panic.
“What do you mean worse??? How bad was I hurt???”
She puts a reassuring hand on your shoulder.
“You’ll be fine. Its just a shattered leg.”
You let out a yelp and look down. Yep. Your left leg is mangled pretty bad. The nurse speaks again.
“Just use one of your healing spells to mend it, and you can be on your way.”
You shake your head.
“I don’t know any healing spells. Can’t you do one?”
She looks at you like you’re stupid.
“Because.” She says. “I’m an Earth Pony. I don’t have magic like you or other unicorns. Second; Even if we had a second unicorn, the spell would not work because only your own magic can pinpoint exactly where to begin the healing process.” She rolls her eyes after she finishes and lets out a huff.
“Mister Mixer, If you don't need anything else, I Will be on my way. Call if you need me.” She says, leaving the room.
“Wait! Who’s Mixer?” You shout after her. Its no use though, as she’s already gone.
You hear a yawn from the chair. You turn and see Vinyl wiping the drool from her face and stretching.
“Morning.” She mumbles. You cut her off before she continues.
“Who’s Mixer?” You ask. A knowing grin spreads across her face.
“Well with an alien like name like yours, you were bound to draw suspicion to yourself, so Octavia and I gave you a nickname. Well, I did. We couldn’t agree on a name so I went with Mixer, and Octavia chose Bravado. Whatever that means.”
You let out a groan. What was wrong with your name?
"Hey btw I overheard you don't know any healing spells, so you're gonna need a metal bone to replace your shattered one until you learn basic healing. I called up a friend of mine. He'll take a look at your leg and make you a replacement." She giggles.
"I don't have any money but I know exactly how to get it for free."
You don't like the sound of that. You want to interject, but the door opens and Octavia walks in.
"My dear Bravado, I do hope you're feeling better." She said. You notice her british accent for the first time at this moment. Wow, that's cool!
"I'll be fine." You respond, attempting to sit up. She smiles.
"Good to hear. I feel so sorry for what happened. Sometimes my roommate can act pretty careless. Vinyl stands and stomps her hoof.
"I do not!" She yells, thus beginning an argument between them. They raised their voices to a little above tolerable before a new, deeper voice cut through the bickering mares.
"QUIET!" The voice shouted. It even made you jump a little. All three of you turn to the now open door and find two stallions. The first is tall and red, with well defined muscles and wearing a darker red plaid shirt with blue jeans and tan work boots. His straw colored hair matched the sprig of wheat he was chewing on. You guessed he was the blacksmith Vinyl was talking about, but you're proven wrong when the smaller of the two stallions walks up to you. This stallion is not as muscular as the other, and posses a horn like you, but much more pointed. He's a dark blue in color and wore a work stained white t-shirt with black jeans and ash colored work boots. His hair was slicked back, and white with a streak of black. He leans down by your crippled leg and squints.
"It's going to be hard to determine all the exact measurements of the bone, but I should be able to get it done in a day or two- Mac? You feel like haulin some metal for me?" He says, standing back up. The red one nods.
"Eeyup" he says in the same voice you heard before. He had a really thick southern accent.
The dark blue stallion goes to walk away, but stops and turns back to you.
"Almost forgot." The points to the red stallion. "That's Big Macintosh."
You look to Big Macintosh and he smiles and waves.
"Howdy." He drawls.
Vinyl snickers.
"He doesn't say much." She says.
The dark blue stallion points to himself.
"I'm Iron Ore, the one who's gonna make you that metal bone."
Mac turns to leave and walks out. Iron goes to follow but grabs Vinyls arm and whispers in her ear. It's to quiet to hear, but you can see her eyes widen and her mouth form a perfect 'o'. She tries to respond, but is interrupted by Iron shutting the door after him. Vinyl's face turns as red as her eyes. You can see the anger boiling inside her.
"That asshole!" She shouts.
"125 bits! That's outrageous!"
She starts pacing the room, rambling about how expensive the price is and how Iron's a rip off artist. Octavia rolls her eyes and leads her out of the room so she can rant in the empty hallway. She returns to you and reaches below your line of sight.
"You know, I never did get a chance to play for you." She says.
Your ears perk. A free show? Sure!
You watch with a small smile as the musician gently lifted a case from the ground. Starting from the bottom, she began to click open the side latches. Then, with great care, she set down the shell and took her position behind the now revealed Double Bass.
She moved the bow against the strings flawlessly, closing her eyes and letting her very being absorb her movements. You watched her left hand as it gently pressed down on the strings in different areas, changing the pitch and producing spot on notes for the beautiful melody. The sun shone down on her from the window, showering her in a stunning golden light. Her hair gently bobbed with with each octave change, and you could see a small smirk begin making its way across her face. Your mouth was agape in awe, her stunning beauty combined with the spectacular music she was producing was starting to hurt your eyes. You weren't blinking. You shake your head and blink rapidly, trying to avoid any unnecessary thoughts of the mare in front of you and instead trying to focus on the music.
To your dismay, the song ends with a long drawn out note. She lets out a happy sigh and smiles. You giggle stupidly and clap as fast and as loud as you can.
“That was amazing!” You say. Octavia blushes.
“Thanks” She says quietly. You stop clapping and stare at her with a dopey grin. Silence falls on the room and all that breaks through is a small clock on the wall slowly ticking. You’re not sure how much time has passed, but soon the nurse opens the door.
“Visiting hours are now over miss Octavia……. Miss Octavia?...... Miss Octavia!!” She yells. The sound never reaches you though. You’re too entranced in each others eyes to take notice to anything else.
Her eyes are amazing. You never got a good chance to look at them, and now that you do, you finally see what you’ve been missing. They are a beautiful shade of dark purple and violet hues, with-
The nurse grabs her and drags her out of the room, Octavia letting out a small whimper in protest. The door slams after them and you’re left in darkness. You sigh sadly at the abrupt ending to your and Octavia’s staring contest.
‘No use in moping… Might as well get some sleep.’ You think to yourself, trying to get comfy on the lumpy hospital mattress. You find a good spot and gently close your eyes.
You awaken and sit up. You’re no longer in the hospital, but a beautiful garden filled with flowers of every shade of blue. You look down at your legs and notice that they are not bandaged up. you tempt fate and slowly stand.
Hey! You can walk! That Iron guy really knew how to blacksmith.
“Zyphos!” You hear a familiar voice call to you. You only know of one mare to call you that.
Luna. You turn to see her running toward you, a worried expression plastered onto her face.
“Hey Princess.” You say. “Do you know where I-”
‘SLAP!’
Your head jerks to the side at the force of Luna’s hand hitting your left cheek. You hold your face and yelp in pain.
“What the hell?!?!” You shout.
Luna’s eyes are misty. She stomps a hoof and Grabs you into a tight hug.
“What the buck is wrong with you???” She yells. “Why did you leave the castle without telling me??? Why didn’t you tell me you got hurt???” Her hold on you tightens.
You can feel your heartbeat increase. You go into comfort mode and wrap your arms around her, returning the embrace. She trembles and buries her head in your chest.
You two stand there, clinging to each other.
“This is a weird dream.” You say.
Luna giggles.
“I forgot to mention… I can travel into ponies dreams. You didn’t return to the castle tonight, so I decided to see what you were up to. From what I have found from others, you were injured pretty badly. I got worried, so I came and found you in your dream.”
You nod. So she raises the moon and visits dreams. Okay. Alot to take in…
“I plan on visiting you tomorrow, so be ready. I also heard that you got a visit from the royal blacksmith, he must be making you a metal bone for you to use until you can learn the right spells to heal the original bone and replace it. I guess I know what our next lesson is going to be.”
She releases you from the hug and you let out a sad sigh. She hears it.
“What was that?” She asks.
You were hoping she didn’t hear that.
“Nothing” You mumble.
You can tell she doesn’t buy it, but she stays quiet and pulls away and lets out a sigh herself.
“Well, I must be going. Many more dreams to visit on this night.”
Her figure slowly begins to fade, her once flawless features now becoming hard to see as she transitions from your dream to that of another.
“I plan on visiting a little bit after hours. I will see you then.” She calls, her voice turning into more of an echo.
Within another instant she is gone, leaving you to dream the rest of the night the way you think it up.
-----@@###@@-----
You wake up gasping for air. You had that goddamn dream with Al Gore and the Giant Russian Clam again. You didn’t really ask the clam if he was russian, you just guessed he was by the tattoo of the Hammer and Sickle on his well defined love handles.
You rub your temples and sit up slowly. A dull pain thwangs its way through your leg and you wince, but it’s nowhere near as bad as it was yesterday. The nurse hears you grunt and opens a curtain to your left.
“Mr. Mixer?” She asks. “Is there something wrong?” She looks down at your leg and puts light pressure on it.
“Can you feel this?” She asks in a gentle tone.
Pain shoots up your leg and straight throughout the entirety of your body. “No. It feels fine!” You say sarcastically. She lets go and writes something down on her clipboard. She squints and removes a few papers, then looks back to you.
“Mr. Iron Ore will be here with your bone substitute shortly. After it is fitted, you will stay another night to allow your leg time to adjust and conform to it, then come tomorrow morning, if you cannot stand on your own, you will be put through Physical Therapy.”
She turns tail and walks away, allowing you time to soak in what she said. You take a deep deep breath, let it out slowly and close your eyes. When you open them again, your eyes wander the room and eventually fall onto your leg. Your gray fur is impossible to see with all the bandages on, but you can see the bruises seeping past and into your upper thigh. You grimace as you look over what you can, the blues and purples of broken blood vessels splotched everywhere. You look away and run a hand through your hair.
"Fuck..." You mutter.
You let your head drop onto your pillow and sigh as you hear another knock at your door.
"Go away." You groan.
Unfortunately, whoever was on the other side of the door had apparently run out of fucks to give and opened the door anyways. It's iron Ore.
The Blue Unicorn strolls in with what appears to be a metal rod in hand. He waves it in the air as he gets closer, showing a full metal bone, about the size and dimensions of yours.
"You want your leg workin or what?" He asks, a now distinct northern accent in his voice. You nod slowly and he looks down at your mangled leg again.
"Alrighty then. The procedure should be rather easy. The bones made of a lighter composite metal, so I should be the same weight as the bone was. I'm gonna use a spell to take the bone and all shattered pieces out, and replace it with the metal one."
Without another word, his horn glows light blue and the same hue soon engulfs your leg. To you it tingles, but doesn't hurt.
"Huh." You mumble. "This might not be so baAAAAHHHHH!!!"
Without warning, your leg is ripped open, and multiple chunks of what you presume to be your bone slowly float out.
"HOLY SHIT!!!" You scream.
"Jeez! Calm down! I'm trying to perform 3 spells at once here and it's kinda hard to concentrate with you screamin." Iron says, sticking a finger in his ear for effect.
Your eyes dart between him and your leg, the sickening suction like squelching sound ringing in your ear with every part of the bone that's removed. Your trembling, expecting searing pain with every movement or extraction, but surprisingly there is none. You calm your screaming and begin to question this.
"Uh.... Hey, Iron? Why don't I feel anything?" You ask the blacksmith turned surgeon. He doesn't look up, but you can see a small smirk appear across his lips.
"Pain deduction spell." He says plainly.
You watch as he begins to sweat, slowly removing the last bone fragment and levitating over the metal replacement. He fits it in a new snug position and begins closing the insertion.
"I thought ponies weren't able to fix others, only themselves." You say.
Iron stands and nods.
"Correct." He says. "But when you've been around the block a couple of times like I have, you find lots of loopholes."
He finishes fixing the opening and backs away. He crosses his arms and strokes his chin.
"Try walking." He mutters.
You nod and swing your legs over the side of your bed... Ok. You can bend your legs.....
You attempt to stand.
Your attempts are shaky at first, but Iron Ore is there to catch you when you start to fall. Eventually, after about 10 minutes. You're able to hobble around the room. You're happy to be able to walk again, but the way you walk kinda makes it look like you shit yourself. Iron chuckles and nods.
"Good enough." He clasps his hands together and heads to the door.
"Your bone is in 12 pieces in a sack on the nightstand. When you learn the right spells, you should be able to mend the bone and replace it with the metal." He says over his shoulder. He grabs the door handle waves.
"See Ya around, I guess."
You look at the clock. 11:46. About 5 hours until visiting hours end, and about 6 hours until Luna is scheduled to come. You turn back the the closing door.
"Wait!"
The door stops ajar and Iron peeks his head in.
"What?"
You shrug.
"You wanna talk for a bit?" You say.
An odd expression appears on Iron's face.
"I guess." He says.
He re-enters and grabs a couple chairs from the other side of the room. He sits on one and rests his hooves on the other.
"What's up?" He asks.
You shrug again.
"Dunno." You admit. "I just didn't feel like being alone for another 6 hours until the princess shows up."
Iron's ears perk and he sits upright, leaning in close to you.
"What princess?" He asks, excitedness evident in his voice. You scoot back a little.
"Princess Luna..." You say, watching as Iron jumps up and puts his hands on his head.
"Are you serious???" He nearly shouts. You wave your hands to get him to calm down.
"Yes!" You hiss. "Now calm down!"
He settles back in his chair, a grin plastered on his face.
"Can I... Meet her when she comes?" He pleads to you.
You shake your head.
"She's visiting after hours." You say.
Iron flattens his ears, and you cock your head.
"Why do you wanna meet her so bad?" You ask quizzically. Iron turns his head from you in the hopes that you don't see the red on his cheeks. You do.
"No reason." He says.
Now you can take a guess at why he wants to meet her, but you want to hear him say it.
"Bullshit." You say. "Why do you wanna meet her?"
Iron fiddles with one of your bone fragments, shrugging and looking away.
"I j-just hardly get to see her when I make armor and weapon deliveries to the kingdom." He puts the bone down. "I only get to converse with Princess Celestia."
You squint.
"So the reason you want to meet Princess Luna is to establish possibilities for your blacksmithing?" You accuse him.
He answers without thinking.
"No."
Gotcha.
You raise your eyebrows and smirk. "Then why do you wanna meet her?" You say, grinning as his eyes shrink.
"I-I mean yes! Yes! The only reason I want to meet her is to talk about that stuff!" He stutters defensively.
You're grin turns into a smile.
"What stuff?" You ask.
He flinches.
"You know, the stuff we were talking about." He mutters. You laugh.
"Come on, bro. We're adults. Just admit you like her."
He sighs and sits.
"Like is and understatement. I'm infatuated with our lunar princess. She's amazing- in magic, in her beauty, in every way. I just wish I could talk to her, but never gotten the opportunity.”
He lowers his head. You can really feel for him, you’ve been in that same position. Only problem is, you kinda like her too.
