2:00 am, before I took my first job working overnight I didn't think two in the morning actually had a feel. That's really the trouble with hindsight, because in hindsight eleven dollars an hour to a seventeen year old high school senior sounds like more than enough to work a dead end job at some huge corporation from ten at night to eight in the morning; two years later you're nineteen and you've gotten a glimpse at the "real" world and you find out your job doesn't pay you enough to think two in the morning is lunch time.
Then you quit your job to work for yourself, and yet here you are at two in the fucking morning making yourself a PB&J sammich because your body keeps telling you that a sammich with some Greek yogurt would really hit the spot; it's also telling you to get some raid because it thinks common house spiders don't count as pets and are really scary.
So here I am with a Greek frozen yogurt in one hand, a PB&J sammich in the other, and making plans to walk down to the home depot for some insecticide.
"Hey Anon, up late again?" Twilight Sparkle is still up too, burning the candle at both ends like she always does, lately she's been stopping by the shop at this hour for quills but I know she's not even close to running low, she just enjoys the company.
"Mhm." I gave her the key to the place a couple months ago when her late night visits where just beginning to get frequent, next thing I knew I had set up a guest bed for her, now we're basically room mates. Her stomach growls and I point her to the freezer section of the store, "It's on the house." I say, but I know it's not really needed. If anything, I say it just to keep up with the routine.
Twilight grabs her own frozen yogurt and takes a seat next to me at the table with her papers in hand --er magic, but for once it's not her usual homework. "...tax forms?" I ask as I catch a glimpse of the 1040 in the corner. Twilight just smiles at me as she shoves a spoon full of yogurt in her mouth as I do the same.
That's the other thing about hindsight, because being shoved into a world of magical ponies seems like the worst thing that could ever happen to a human being; and maybe it is, but working overnight left me a well rounded human being, and I've taken to the new environment rather well: I've started up my own general store, and making friends here wasn't much different than making friends at my overnight job. So in hindsight maybe a two a.m. lunch time kind of sucks, but in the end my overnight job had me coming out a much more responsible young adult than I thought originally (so nanny nanny boo boo mom!)
So here I am, eating yogurt and sharing a sammich with Princess Sparkle while she looks over my expenses and does my taxes (and whines that it's Sandwich not Sammich.)
Now eight months into living in Equestria, two in the morning has a new feel, I like to call it "Twilight Time".
"You really need to cut back on the frozen Greek yogurt Anon, it's really adding up."
"Does it put me in debt?"
"No but you're spending 80 bits a month on it."
"It's the simple pleasures in life Twilight, and nothing says twilight time like two cups of frozen greek yogurt."
Twilight laughs at my simplicity, but nods in affirmation all the same; after all...
The funny thing about hindsight is hindsight is 20/20; because in hindsight maybe 80 bits is way too much to be spending on a couple of frozen yogurts a month, but that doesn't necessarily mean that I care. It's worth it to see the smile on her face.
"...we really need to get some raid for that spider,"
"What's Raid Anon?"
...in hindsight I should have brought some Raid from Earth.
