Pinkie Pie hummed to herself as she gently squeezed the icing bag, watching the thin ropes of blue cream form delicate patterns on her cake. It was tricky work; getting the icing to lay just right was truly a craft of mastery. The pink mare, however-living and working in a bakery nearly her entire life- had mastered the art to all but Ninja baker level. With another short squeeze, Pinkie's eyes narrowed as she prepared to put on the final, perfect touch.
"Pinkie Pie!" There came a shout from the doorway of the corner bakery, followed by an increasingly frantic string of shouts. "Woah...woah...WOAHWOAHWOAHWATCHTHECAKES!"
A blue tornado whirled into the room, tumbling to the pink filly's feet. Rainbow Dash stood up and shook the flour out of her mane. In the sky, she was as graceful as a swan; on land, she was maybe as graceful as a blind, one-legged swan, on her good days.
As she watched the cyan mare trip and hurl into the room, Pinkie's heart leapt from her chest. The cakes, the perfect cakes she had spent hours icing were about to become perfect cake puree. She would have stopped the very space-time continuum for the sake of her pastries, for, after all, she was Pinkie Pie.
"Oh, Dashie, you clumsy filly, you! You almost turned my cakes into PANcakes!" Pinkie cracked into a huge grin and giggled at the pun. Rainbow couldn't help but smile. This was why she loved having the bubbly pony around.
"Sorry 'bout that, Pinkie." She apologized, before lighting up like a Christmas tree. "Did you see it, though? The Wonderbolts flew right over town!" Rainbow exclaimed, bearing the excited look that Pinkie knew was exclusively saved for the Wonderbolts. "Right over us, Pinkie. Right through Ponyville air." She punctuated the last comment with a deep inhale, as if the cyan mare were trying to breathe in a little Wonderbolt.
"Oh of course, Silly!" Pinkie said playfully, "They were probably just around to pick up the-OH!" Pinkie gasped her signature gasp, and sped out of the room, almost as if she had six legs. Rainbow could hear the clattering of pans from the next room over Pinkie's mumbling. "Oh my good golly goodness! I can't believe I... What am I..."
Within the minute she burst back into the room, carting a cake that toppled dangerously, threatening to fall over. The cake, a magnificent seven layer that towered mightily into the air, maybe Rainbow's mouth water. She might have to pull off another MMMMadness caper.
"It's so pretty isn't it?"
Rainbow's fantasy of diving in a sea of cake popped. "Huh? Oh, yeah it is Pinkie."
Pinkie beamed. "Oh I'm so happy you like it! Its vanilla on the outside, and yummy and chocolatey on the inside, with raspberry filling! Crisp and creamy, soft and scrumptious..." Pinkie listed dreamily, not seeming to notice Rainbow Dash leaning ever closer to the source of deliciousness. "ANYway," she suddenly stopped, "I've got blue and yellow and white frosting, and I hope they'll love it too!"
At that, the weather filly looked up with a slightly confounded expression. "They?"
Pinkie clopped her hoofs together in joy, sending a sudden and vivid image of Twilight doing the same through Rainbow's mind. "Oh yeah! The Wonderbolts! This is for them!"
Rainbow's eyes bulged from her skull, and her wings started to expand. At this, she turned a little pink and mumbled something about 'reflex' with a nervous chuckle. Inside, however, Rainbow felt fireworks. The Wonderbolts. THE Wonderbolts. Were coming to the bakery. THIS bakery. "SERIOUSLY, PINKAMENA DIANE PIE?! Holy sweet bucking Celestia's chariot, the Wonderbolts are coming here?" Pinkie had never heard her friend address her by her full name before, and it sounded so odd to her ears when she did.
Pinkie let out a sugar-coated giggle. "Hee hee, my name sounds silly from you! And, oh yes, this is what happened:" Pinkie began to retell the story. "So, the Wonderbolts called up Mr. Cake, and they're like, 'Hello, we need a cake for our thingymajig.' And Mr. Cake was all," Pinkie''s expression changed; her eyes derped, and she deepened her voice to impersonate Mr. Cake. "Sure thing, Mr. Wonderbolt, I'll have my assistant make one!" She finished with a deep breath. "And so here I am, with the CRUD!"
Rainbow bit her lip and stifled a giggle. "The what?"
Pinkie stared as if the answer were obvious. "The Creamy Raspberry Ultra Delight! CRUD. Duh!"
"Oh." The cyan mare could no longer resist, and burst out into a fit of laughter, giggles, and snorts. Suddenly, she remembered. "Wait, Pinkie, are ALL of the Wonderbolts coming?"
Pinkie looked thoughtfully into space. "No, I don't think so, I think it's just that one, she's been by a few times to pick things up..." Rainbow grew desperate, her ears and wings were at full attention.
"That one?" The excited pegasus quoted back. "Which one?" She silently hoped it wasn't Fleetfoot or Rapidfire; those two, while still being awesome, were at the bottom of the Wonderbolt food chain. Oh Celestia, what if it was...
"Oh I dunno, Dashie, that one, y'know, she's yellow, looks like her head is on fire..." Pinkie paused mid-description and snorted at the mental image. "Heehee, that's funny!"
Meanwhile, Dash's heart had stopped. Yellow, fire...holy son of a-!
"Spitfire. SPITFIRE. THE CAPTAIN OF THE WONDERBOLTS IS COMING HERE?!"
Pinkie clopped her hoof down on the table, looking triumphant. "Yeah, that's her! She's really nice, every time she comes around-" Rainbow froze and leaned foreward, eye to eye with the pink mare, who shrunk back and gave a nervous giggle.
"You mean," Rainbow figured, her voice trembling in excitement. "Spitfire has come here more than once, to this very bakery, to make a conversation with this very...uh...you, and you never felt to share that information?"
Pinkie grinned, looking relieved, which confused the blue pegasus. "Oh yeeeeah... I knew there was something I forgot! I forgot to tell you!" Rainbow stared holes through the pink pony, but knew this was Pinkie after all, and she probably really did forget.
She sighed. "Alright, fine, Pinkie. Just tell me this: when is she coming?" Pinkie relapsed to her thoughtful position. Eyes screwed up in concentration, she looked as though she were trying to pull a memory from her early childhood.
"Well... Mr. Cake said something about that, he was just really really hectic, all yelling and stuff, I didn't quite catch it- We just got the order and he was all nervous, and the icing just wasn't right, and Mrs. Cake came in and she's all-" The curly-haired pink mare's tangent was cut off by a very exasperated pegasus.
"Pinkie! Just get to it, will you?"
Pinkie tapped her hooves together in thought and tilted her head. "Ooooh! Tomorrow! Yep!"
Rainbow felt as though rockets were lighting underneath her feet; she began to hop up and down on the spot in a very uncharacteristic, Pinkie-ish way. As much as she tried to resist, the blue mare could've sworn the floor had turned to rubber and her hooves were spring-loaded.
"Tomorrow! Spitfire. Is coming. Tomorrow. Here." She gasped and looked to her hooves. "Maybe right on these floorboards!"
Woah. Calm, Rainbow Dash, she thought. Don't lose your cool. Rainbow took a breath and inflated her bravado once more.
"Thanks a million, Pinkie." Rainbow said cooly, swishing her hair to one side, but still wearing a huge, gleaming grin. "I owe you one." Pinkie wiggled her tail and did a little dance in place.
"Anything for you, Dashie!"
Rainbow gave her another little smile and made to leave; Pinkie noticed the additional little spring in her step as she trotted to the door. Suddenly, however, the cyan pegasus stopped dead in her tracks, turning back to Pinkie, a look of horror etched in every one of her features.
"Pinkie...." The horror-stricken Rainbow Dash began. "You'll be here, Spitfire will be here... You'll give her the cake, she'll leave." Pinkie nodded in glee. Rainbow's expression hadn't changed.
"She'll take the cake and leave the bakery."
Pinkie, even though she felt her mind beginning to cloud with confusion, nodded in consensus again, with slightly less vigor.
"So...when do I actually get to meet her?" Rainbow's face fell a thousand miles. Her grin slid away like melting butter, her tail hung flat, and even the colors of her mane seemed to dull. In fact, every color of the polychromatic filly seemed to grow less vibrant.
Pinkie's face fell as well, mirroring the miserable mare in front of her. Only the magnificent CRUD seemed to retain its scrumptious glow.
"Oh... I'm sorry, Dashie..." Pinkie squeaked out. "I-I didn't think of that..." Rainbow hung her head and let out a sigh. It was the most defeated noise the pink filly had ever heard come out of the normally confident, resilient pegasus. Like a hole poked into a balloon, it deflated out of her friend like her soul was leaving with it. Pinkie couldn't stand to see her friend this way; it broke her heart. Now was the time, as a good friend, to act.
Suddenly returning to Earth, Pinkie Pie noticed her friend had moved away and was trudging to the door, head low, as if she were stepping through thick sludge. The bakery filly's eyes widened in alarm and revelation as an idea struck her like lightening. Her smile grew until it engulfed every end of her face, and her eyes glittered with the ghost of the rainboom she'd seen as a filly. This was it.
But her friend was leaving! "DASHIE! DASHIE WAIT!" Pinkie Pie reared back like a cobra and practically flew after her friend. Rainbow heard Pinkie calling her, but it went in one ear and wisped out the other. Not even the brightly-hued filly herself could clear the stormcloud suspended over the pegasus's lowered head.
Pinkie was never one for defeat. She charged the pegasus, almost taking the both of them down in the process. "DASHIE! I have the best idea ever ever ever!" She bounced clear over the pegasus and landed directly in front of her, leaning as far foreward as gravity would allow, eyes wide as saucers and smile bright like Luna's moon.
Rainbow could resist any longer and looked up from under her lashes as the beaming pony above her. Pinkie was suddenly reminded of her struggle to befriend the sullen donkey who had moved in last week. Too bad there didn't exist a welcome-welcome-be-happy-Dashie-I-have-a-really-super-duper-good-idea song, or this ordeal may have ended much sooner.
"Dashie, listen." Dash looked right at her and sat on her haunches. She knew there was no avoiding the pink filly; if Pinkie Pie ever became dangerous, the whole of Ponyville would be at her mercy. Rainbow laughed inwardly at the thought, in spite of herself. Yeah, right.
Rainbow listened with all the intent she never had in school. And she had a lot of attention left to spare from the classroom. At the end of the describing of Pinkie's plan, Rainbow felt a tug at the corner of her mouth, then a tremble. Then, a fully fledged smile broke over the pegasus's face like a baby bird hatching from an egg.
Pinkie beamed so greatly, greater than she ever had. Watching Rainbow's color wash and her spirits inflate was sweeter than any cake she had ever delighted in tasting. And watching Rainbow break into a smile after the state she was in was more than she could handle; it was as magnificent as watching Celestia's yellow sun rise over the Equestrian hills. Pinkie felt the familiar tickle of a song crawling up her throat. Rainbow SAW the familiar tickle crawling up Pinkie's throat.
"Pinkie, are you going to-? Oh shi-" Rainbow picked up into the sky like a bullet and sped off with speeds that would put said bullet to shame when she saw Pinkie open her mouth with that glint in her eye. That was the warning glint of an impromptu Pinkie song. And Rainbow sure as hay wasn't going to stick around for it. "Thanks for the help, Pinkieeeee!" She cried from the distance, knowing, somehow, the pink pony would be able to hear her.
"Anything for you, Dashie." Pinkie repeated, quietly. She spun on the spot and sprung back into the bakery. She had cakes to ice.
Tomorrow rolled around, and Pinkie Pie rolled out of bed, immediately jumping to her feet. This was no time to be tired. This was no time to snooze. She was going to help her friend get what she'd always dreamed of today. Pinkie brushed her teeth briefly, and wasted not a second on her mane, which sprung to life on its own. Her colors seemed brighter today, her pinks seemed pinker, and her hooves were bouncing around in excitement as if someone had replaced her floor with burning coals.
Pinkie tumbled down the stairs from her loft to the main bakery floor, eager as a baby squirrel. This was going to be, to quote the very cyan filly she was helping out today, SO awesome. The Cakes were away for the day, hoping to regain their title at the Canterlot Dessert Competition, and the bakery was barren, save for the gleaming tower of CRUD, whose magnificence radiated to every corner of the room.
Pinkie could hardly keep still as she waited for her friend to arrive. She tapped her hooves. She clopped them together. She sprung about the room, tail swishing. She had a heated arguement with CRUD regarding Celestia's political etiquette. She named every dust bunny she found. Georgie Jackson Jr. blew away more than once, so she kicked him out of the family. Finally, her friend strutted in.
From the general glow that Rainbow Dash emitted, Pinkie Pie knew she had shared her excitement all morning. And from the slight sweat beading on Rainbow's forehead, and her slightly unkempt mane, it was evident she had also done a little dance to accompany her morning routine. In fact, the cyan pegasus still had a little bounce left over in her step as she approached the counter behind which Pinkie stood.
"Ready for this, Dashie?" Pinkie jiggled slightly in place in pure excitement.
"Oh yeah, I SO am." Rainbow smiled like a sunrise.
"Okay, wanna run on over the plan?" Pinkie asked.
Rainbow Dash agreed; it would probably be best. Pinkie Pie began to read from a list.
"Step 1. Dashie goes over to Rarity's, no matter how painful it was, and gets her hair done up."
A half hour later, Rainbow stepped out of Rarity's boutique, her hair combed and pulled back in a rather elegant twist. All of her rainbow colors were combed through and blended together like a beautiful swirl of hue. Rarity had confirmed, to Rainbow's delight, that she looked virtually unrecognizable.
"You must come over more often, Rainbow dear!" Rainbow made a mental note to never come over again.
"Step 2. Dashie takes Pinkie's place behind the counter, and Pinkie goes and plays hide and seek with herself."
Rainbow settled in next to the CRUD, behind the counter of the bakery. She felt powerful and prepared for when her idol would walk through the door. Pinkie was up in her loft, peeking through a hole in the floor, a hoof stuffed in her mouth to stifle her excitement.
"Step 3. Dashie gives Yellowbolt the CRUD, gets to talk to Wonderfire, and Spitflame will never think Dashie is a wacky fangirl!"
This was Rainbow's favorite part of the plan, her piece de resistance. She didn't want to scare Spitfire by bursting the door and blubbering like a crazed fan, and this way she could have a decent conversation with the yellow star without being labeled a fanatic. If she asked, Rainbow was just Pinkie's assistant for the day. The bell at the front tolled. It was go-time.
Rainbow fought to contain herself, and, not to mention, her wings, as she watched the pegasus enter with a grin. Dash smiled back, courteous as could be.
You better not screw this up, Rainbow Dash.
Spitfire sauntered to the counter, where Rainbow Dash stood like a statue. A smiling, slightly terrifying statue.
Rainbow Dash saw the filly was just as she always was; fiery hair standing wild on its own, disobeying the laws of physics, long lashes, a warm smile, demure, half-closed eyes...sultry without trying...striking blue flight suit...
WAIT. Rainbow did a double take. Spitfire wasn't wearing her flightsuit. All that was visible was a sunny yellow coat, gleaming in the light. Control fled from her on feet of fire as Rainbow felt her wings stiffen involuntarily.
The yellow mare spoke, her voice as silky and pretty as ever. "Hi there! I had a pickup ordered for today...It's under Spitfire, one word...I-woah, is that it?" She observed the great height of the CRUD with awe.
"Oh-uh-yes of course, Ms. Spitfire! That's the one!" Rainbow felt the power of speech return to her, and her smile grew even wider. She was being more courteous than she had been in years, and if anyone deserved it, it was this pony of all ponies.
Spitfire's jaw dropped. Rainbow's insides fluttered. It was adorable.
"That...is really an amazing cake! What do you call something like that, besides amazing?" Spitfire remarked, her eyes still lost on the details of the CRUD's icing.
Rainbow heard a sugary giggle from upstairs. The cyan mare sighed and stated, "It's the-uh- Creamy Raspberry Ultra Delight." Spitfire cocked an eyebrow and looked at her. Rainbow blushed.
"You know, that spells CRUD." Spitfire said laughingly. Rainbow blushed even deeper.
"Yeah, it was the baker, I dunno what her thought was, she's really something-" Rainbow stammered, as Spitfire's expression turned from a smile to a slightly confused look. Dash heard another giggle from the loft.
"You aren't the baker?" The athelete questioned. Rainbow grew hot.
Oh no, she wasn't supposed to catch on. Mayday, mayday, evasive maneuvers. THE PLAN! Stick with the plan, Rainbow Dash.
"N-no she's my assistant. No, I'm her assistant. No, s-she's sick. What I meant to say, was-" Rainbow's brain had taken a surprise vacation. Every thought was banished like Luna to the moon, and Spitfire was Celestia.
Buck.
Spitfire's attention was once again on the cake, and she hardly heard what the flustered Rainbow Dash had said. Dash breathed a sigh of relief.
"Oh, I'm so sorry, what did you say?" Spitfire turned to Rainbow. Rainbow felt the temperature rise again.
Oh sure, THAT she heard.
"Oh nothing, let me just get that all wrapped up for ya." YA? WHO SAYS THAT, RAINBOW DASH?
Spitfire beamed a stunning smile. Rainbow was temporarily unable to move, as if her feet had waxed to the floor.
"That would be SO awesome." Rainbow froze solid. Did she just...did she... Dash's insides exploded. Holy cow.
Bending over behind the counter to where Pinkie had said the boxes were, Rainbow beamed and squealed quietly like a filly. Spitfire was way, WAY greater than she could ever have imagined on her own.
Feeling a box, Rainbow grasped it and pulled it out. The box was hardly big enough to cover the bottom layer of the cake, let alone the rest of the greatness that was the CRUD. WHAT what Pinkie thinking?!
"Oh, uh... That seems a little small." Spitfire giggled in the cutest way at this most pitiful of boxes. Rainbow didn't have a plan, not for this.
"Hahaha, you're right, lemme see if I can find another..." She made to get up, toppled, and tripped over her own hooves. Then the chaos hit.
Rainbow fell over the counter, landing flat on her back. Her delicately and deceptively made hair caught on a nail in the wooden floor and began to unravel, without the blue mare noticing. As the abashed Rainbow Dash made to stand up, she tripped over the very pin that fell out of her hair when she tripped the first time.
REALLY. Dear Celestia, why does this have to happen now?!
Rainbow had always been tough, confident, and agile; now she was reduced to not much more than a fumbling pile of jelly in the presence of her idol, Captain of the Wonderbolts, Spitfire.
Spitfire watched as Rainbow tumbled hopelessly. She tried to bite back a grin, but found it more difficult than she thought.
"I am so sorry," She exclaimed, rushing to help Rainbow up, "I-heehee- shouldn't be-hahaha-laughing-haha!" Rainbow, ignoring the throb of pain in her flank, didn't mind. In fact, she joined in with Spitfire's giggles.
After a minute of incessant laughter, Spitfire stopped suddenly, her eyes locked on something past Rainbow's face. Rainbow then noticed she had stepped from the shelter of the counter. Her cutie mark.
Spitfire recognized it instantly. Just then, Rainbow's mane fell completely loose, her bangs dusting her eyes, each rainbow shade now separated in her signature formation. Game over.
"Oh my goodness!" Spitfire exclaimed in plain shock. Rainbow's heart shattered. She really did think the cyan mare was nothing but a fangirl, and now the craziest of fangirls.
Without warning, Spitfire broke into the widest of grins. "Hey, I know you! You're the filly from the competition, from the Gala, that directed the hurricane at the reserve!" Spitfire beamed brightly.
All correct. The yellow mare certainly knew who Dash was. Rainbow blushed pinker than words could describe. It was so uncharacteristic of her, even she was surprised at herself.
"I-I'm sorry. I just-just wanted to talk to you." Rainbow confessed, leaving her pride and bravado in the dust. This was bigger than that. This was her idol. "You r-really are my idol, and I hardly ever got to speak to you, and I heard you were coming to Ponyville, and-" She was cut off.
Spitfire smiled at her. "I know, I do have fans, you know," She started, and noting Rainbow's humiliated look, continued, "But you really stood out." WHAT.
Rainbow's glow and pride rushed back to her. "Oh, really? That's awesome!"
Spitfire laughed and nodded, "Yeah, really. Most of my fans are just, sorry about this, snobs. They like my popularity, they like my fame, that's it." Rainbow couldn't help but laugh herself. "I just wished you'd come and talk to me yourself, not go to such, erm, great lengths." She gestured at the hair pins scattered around the floor.
"Really? I just thought you'd think I was some crazy fangirl..." Rainbow looked to the floor once more.
"Rainbow Dash," Spitfire said, and Rainbow lit up upon heaing her name, "I've seen crazy fans. And you, my friend, aren't one of them. You really have something special." Spitfire's silky voice melted the words like cream.
Rainbow laughed. "Thanks. I mean, I hear it ALL the time," she joked, as Spitfire joined in with a laugh like a tinkling bell. "But seriously, you have no idea how much it means to me to hear that from you."
Spitfire felt warm inside. She really connected to this blue pegasus, and talking to her right now was a true gem of her day. There really was something about Rainbow Dash, the way she smiled, the way she was confident in herself but how she melted in front of the yellow pegasus. It was soft, gentle, and alluring, and Spitfire loved it in a way she couldn't make clear to herself.
Rainbow knew there was something about Spitfire. It was in the way she grinned, so innocently and adorably, how she was understanding, kind, and great. It was in her long eyelashes, her gentle look, her scent, her windswept hair...
Their lips met. It was so unexpected, both fillies froze at the same time, completely taken aback. Rainbow's brain sparked like a charged wire, but she was unable to form a complete thought. Spitfire as well was astounded and captivated by the cyan filly's charm, her scent, and the feel of her lips. It brought heat to her lower region and butterflies to her stomach.
Rainbow's breath came in quick bursts as she realized what was happening to her, right now. She was liplocked with her idol, Spitfire, the greatest pony known to pony kind, and it was the greatest kiss she had ever had.
