As candles flickered in the small old shack an aged old pony looked over the eager faces of the foals around her, all so young, all so eager.
“A long long time ago, before history was recorded and Ponies played across the land in such large numbers as they do now, two sisters birthed By time and space came into being.
Long lived these sisters grew, and as they grew came into their own power, discovering that while sisters, they where opposite. One raised the sun, bringing light and warmth, and one raised the moon, Bringing Shadows and comfort of dreams.
The two sisters ruled the lands justly, but, as with every world, there was discontent. Some tried to take the rich land for themselves.
First rose a lord of chaos, spreading his ways across the land twisting it in ways no one understood, only chaos reigned. While this desire for chaos was not malicious it would bring only harm to Pony kind. So the sisters sought out a method to defeat the chaos lord.
In doing so the sisters discovered a grand crystalline tree, within it rested what became known as the elements of Harmony. Harnessing their power the two sisters Approached the lord of chaos Giving him one last chance. When he ignored their offer, the sisters combined their powers and that of the power of the Elements. With that power they sealed the lord of chaos in stone and returned their land to what it once had been.
And all was calm… for the moment.
Time passed and more pony’s came to the flourishing land. Smaller kingdoms spawning, beautiful and bright. A shining beacon in the northern region was a grand example. The Crystal empire was a sparkling gem, home to the newly evolved Crystal ponies, this land and these ponies lived in harmony. But, as before, darkness grew, and the greed and darkness of the empire Crown prince showed itself with the death of their benevolent ruler. Now free to rule his way The dark Lord Sombra Took all for himself.
And so the sisters traveled to the crystal empire hoping to seek a peaceful solution, and yet once again they were turned away, Sombra would not give up his power.
Once again the sisters summoned the power of Harmony, combining their magic’s, But, Sombras Magic, his very evil had seeped into the land and so, when the sisters banished him, sealing him with the power of Harmony, so to, did they seal the empire.
Shocked by the power of the elements and not fully understanding what had happened, the sisters sealed away the elements within their castle, and built a new kingdom, there they no longer held apart from the ponies they ruled. The sister of the sun was most beloved by the ponies, her sun brought warm days, food, and fun. While the sister of the moon was slowly forgotten. Deep inside the sister felt resentment grown, but knew that even if Ponies did not love the moon she raised, they did still loved her dreams.
And so it came to pass that peace once more settled in the land, stories of the great evils passed into legend and truth was forgotten. In this time of peace two brothers, seeing the potential of the land came to conquer it. One brother however was swayed by the ways of the ponies, and in his wandering came to befriend a great wizard. Learning more of the land, the brother lost his will to conquer wanting instead the same harmony the Ponies lived in. He went to his brother beseeching peace, but his brother merely mocked him, disgusted by his weakness.
Knowing the threat his brother possessed the younger brother instead Gave his older brother his most cherished amulet, he would always love and be loyal to his brother, no matter what happened.
Satisfied by the promise the elder brother ceased his mocking and sent his brother away.
Unwilling to let the land fall into the clutches of his power hungry brother, the younger set out to see the princesses, and with the aid of the wizard, was able to see them, and warn them of his brothers plans.
Not wishing to risk any pony by using the elements, the sisters combined their powers and battled the older brother before he could reach his full strength. The battle was long and hard, but eventually the beast was defeated in sealed in the prison of Tartarus. Without the elements of Harmony that was the best they could do. But the prison was deep and sealed with strong magic, guarded even by the great dog Cerberus.
Surely there he would cause no trouble.
Again peace came, the two sisters rejoiced that they had not needed the elements to seal the evil of the older brother. The younger, who had grown to love the ponies, Bid his farewell and returned to his own land, hoping to spread the truth of love and friendship.
Pony kind grew, and eventually a little town was established, the small kingdom, grew and expanded outward, more settlement popping up, as all ponies mingled in happiness and friendship.
And yet, as time went on, the Ponies dreams were not enough to satisfy the sister of the moon. Each night she raised a glorious moon, each night she watched as ponies slipped inside, and slept through her beautiful creation, so strongly did rage and jealousy grow that she grew blind to the ponies who did honor her night.
Why so did ponies love her sisters day? Why did they not love her night in turn?
Loved by her subjects and delighted with the peace, the older sister saw not the change in the younger. Choosing instead to ignore all signs, in hopes of maintaining peace.
But it was not to be.
Dark forces began to feed the anger and sadness in the moon sisters heart growing in strength, Her sadness turned to Rage, her anger to Jealousy and, with a grand proclamation, she challenged her sister to be the sole ruler of their land. All would love her glorious night, no longer would she be the forgotten sister!
Desperate to see peace the sister of the sun tried to rationalize with the twisted sister of the moon, but the creature would hear none of it. Feeding her darkness the evil pulsed within her, and the sister of the moon went blind to her sisters sorrow and guilt.
Battle came to pass, streaks of light the very sisters who had both so loved their land, now battled to keep it. But these sisters two parts of a whole could not ever over powers each other, their power evenly matched as it was.
With each strike of their power the land shook and Ponies fled in fear. Seeing the destruction their battle wrought the sister of the sun knew it could not go on forever. With no choice She fled to their old home. The moon pursuing with a hunger for vengeance.
With all her strength summoned and tears in her eyes The sister of the sun begged the sister of the moon to see reason, but madness had claimed the mind of the moon and so the sister of the sun summoned all her power drawing on the elements of harmony to tip the scales in her favor she Banished her sister, sealing her and the darkness that had possessed her deep into her own beloved moon.
As her heart broke, so did the Harmony
Powerless and weakened the sister of the sun once more sealed away the elements and returned to rebuild. She faced the many years alone, Ponies still revered her but pain was not eased, she who was so long lived saw the land on her own, no friend would live as long as she and certainly no love.
Taking on her sisters duty the sister of the sun began to see what the sister of the moon had seen, she felt the isolation of the night, and looking at the star filled sky she wept her apologies over and over she could only hope a true master of Harmony could come to them. She and her sisters had failed, The harmony they had possessed had only ever destroyed.
Their feelings had not been enough to unlock the true potential of magic and harmony and so the sister of the sun took students to her side with faith that one day she would find the one who bore the true magic of harmony and friendship, one who would surpass all and become the princess the land truly needed.”
As her story ended the old mare looked at the small sleeping bodies, all had fallen asleep even the most eager of fillys, Smiling the elder watched over them all, their small frames so full of light and potential. Even as she looked them over she wondered if any of them would be the one the princess sought, her eyes moved resting on each Filly, coming to the last who had struggled so hard to stay awake, her head resting on a book the small purple pony smiled as she dreamed of one day becoming a student of the princess.
