The first thing Attache noticed about the Crystal Empire was that it was cold. It wasn't supposed to be cold, he was certain. He'd read up on it and apparently there was some magical artefact – the crystal something-or-other – that made the land habitable, almost tropical. Apparently it was on the fritz, which really shouldn't have been surprising, considering the situation. Irritating, but unsurprising. The second thing he noticed was Queen Sombra – and how could he not? She towered over her entourage of oddly happy crystal ponies. He had been briefed on the situation, but this was the first indication that anything was really out of the ordinary, and just how out of the ordinary things were. There was very obviously more to this than a simple military coup. Mind control magic, perhaps? The briefing had mentioned that Sombra was a powerful sorceress, her having that capability wouldn't have surprised him in the slightest. He focused his attention on the slaves, semi-transparent, clothed in tattered rags, and grinning like lunatics. Partially because he was absolutely certain that they were the key to finding out what was really going on, but mostly to avoid gawking at Queen Sombra. Which was, admittedly, very difficult to do. "As, um, as I'm sure you are aware, the Crystal Empire has been allied with Equestria for the past eight hundred years. Until, um. Until now." He removed some papers and placed them on the table, quite proud that he was able to keep from trembling - barely. "Princess Celestia would very much like to keep things that way, despite the, um, change in regime."
"So it's an alliance, then?"
"No, no, merely an informal agreement to mutual non-aggression. Princess Celestia isn't... quite open to an alliance at this time.” Or ever, he pointedly avoided adding. “But, at the same time, she would like to avoid warfare. Think of it like, ahem, like a pre-emptive peace treaty." He awkwardly pushed the papers across the table, towards Sombra. "Celestia promises that, so long as you don't come too close to Equestria's borders, she won't so much as acknowledge any, um, conquests you feel like making as the new Empress. In return, you will agree to, well, to not let your conquests get too close to Equestria's borders."
"Hm." Sombra rubbed her chin thoughtfully and then made an airy gesture. "I believe I have a counter-proposal for you. Oh, but first, your tea is here." Sure enough, there was a Crystal Pony slave girl, holding a large platter that carried an ornate, fine china tea set. With delicate grace and cautious perfection, she placed it on the table, and bowed low to him first, then lower still to her Empress. "Now, now, young lady. This man here is our guest! It'd be rude to make him pour his own tea."
"Of course, Your Majesty," the slave mumbled. She made a move to pour a glass of tea, when Sombra coughed and raised an expectant eyebrow. "Oh. My apologies, Your Majesty." She moved, positioning herself between the tea and Attache, and then bent down low to pour him a glass and offer a view. Attache blushed, and tastefully averted his eyes.

Something I've become quite skilled at, if I do say so myself. He was no help on that front – other than as a test subject, of course – but I made do.” She smirked. “As you very well know right now.
