Chapter 1: Happy Fifth
Appleloosa was a small, quiet town that was distanced from most other towns and cities, until a certain Wonderbolt moved to town. All the ponies and buffalo would give the occasional glance upwards to see the light blue pegasus do a few stunts. They would all give a small smile as Soarin graced their town with his presence, and they knew why he did so as well. Many, if not all of the residents of Appleloosa could still remember the marriage ceremony. It was a joyous occasion for them all as the resident apple stallion, Braeburn, married his flying lover.
The two stallions have been happily married for five years, and they couldn’t be happier. The town residents waved to the flying pegasus as he passed above them. Soarin waved back to the town’s denizens as he flew to somepony that could help him make a memorable night for his husband. The Wonderbolt flew around the town for a few blocks before coming across a certain stand. He gently glided towards the ground until he made a soft landing and trotted up to the stand.

“Hey there, Soarin. How’s life been treating you?” Strongheart said.
“It’s been pretty good. Got some time off for a bit after Spitfire and Fleetfoot had an accident,” Soarin said. He shook his head a little.
“What were they arguing about this time?” Strongheart asked as she gave her own slight headshake.
“I’m not even sure. I only arrived in time to see them begin racing each other. Kind of wondering how long it will take before one of them finally admits their feelings for the other,” Soarin said with a slight chuckle.
“Reminds me of a certain pegasus that I know.”
Soarin gave a slight pout. “Hey, I would have won that competition if I had trained for it.”
“You and I both know that you wouldn’t have stood a chance against him. I mean, he is part of the Apple family, and they’ve been bucking apple trees for years,” Strongheart said with slight laughter.
“Yeah, still probably not one of my better choices.” Soarin chuckled a bit while rubbing the back of his head.
“Either way, I still think it’s nice that the two of you got together,” Strongheart said with a warm smile.
Soarin smiled to himself as he thought of his husband. “Yeah, me too. So were you able to get the stuff that I ordered?”
“It took a bit of looking around, but I found everything that you asked for,” Strongheart pulled out a black, covered basket. “What is it, your fifth anniversary or something?” She asked.
“It actually is. He is working on dinner and I wanted to make sure that this night would be special,” Soarin said as he let a small smile grace his lips.
“Well, happy fifth to the both of you,” Strongheart smiled as she patted the stallion’s back.
“So, how much do I owe you?”
“It’s on the house, and before you say anything, I won’t accept it. If he asks, just tell him that it’s an apology for after how me and my tribe acted those few years ago,” Strongheart said, but gave a slight frown.
“He has already forgiven you, but I’ll let him know,” Soarin said as he patted the buffalo’s back.
Strongheart smiled back at him. The two shared a brief hug before going their separate ways. The buffalo was about to clean her stand when she noticed a gold and silver bit on top. She gave a small scowl as she grabbed the currency and chased after the pegasus. She didn’t make it in time as the stallion took to the air, but she did notice the small wink that he gave her. The buffalo could only shake her head as she trotted back to her stand and placed the currency under the counter.
There was a slight spring in Soarin’s step as he trotted a few blocks before taking off into the air, and flying towards home. The stallion took a few detours to allow his husband a little more time to finish dinner before he would arrive. The pegasus also wanted to enter through the window and drop off the basket so it would be a surprise for his stallion. The pegasus soon made out the red farmhouse and couldn’t help the huge smile that was spreading across his muzzle.
The stallion softly flapped his wings as he circled to the side of the house and went for the window to the master bedroom. He glided inside as he made a soft landing on the oak flooring. Flicking his ears back and forth to hear if anypony was coming, he carefully placed the basket on the bed. Making sure the room was clean enough for later use, he trotted up to the door and cracked it open.

One particular treat he was hoping for was an apple pie. He remembered his husband’s cousin, Applejack, made a very delicious apple pie during the Grand Galloping Gala. Taking one last whiff of the air, Soarin quietly trotted through the house. He reached the stairs and carefully fluttered down using his wings. When he touched the polished floor, he looked around the corner to his left to see Braeburn in the kitchen. The pegasus let a smile grace his lips as he watched his husband walk around the kitchen. The apple stallion was finished cooking and was busy cleaning up the many pots and pans. The Wonderbolt spotted the table filled with the delicious treats and carefully snuck his way towards them.
The stallion glanced back to make sure the country stallion was still busy as he inched his way to the table. He slowly extended his hoof, a few centimeters away from the apple fritter, when he heard a rough cough come from his side. The pegasus froze as he slowly turned toward the source. Soarin couldn’t help the sheepish grin that spread across his face as he looked at Braeburn. The pegasus let his eyes wander a bit as he took in his husband’s light gold coat.

Soarin gave a nervous chuckle as he rubbed the back of his head. Braeburn shook his head at the pegasus’ antics before slowly trotting up to him. Soarin noticed the stallion nearing him, and started moving towards him as well. The two met each other halfway and gave a quick nuzzle and peck on the cheek before smiling at each other.
“Let me guess. You used the window from the our bedroom to sneak in here?” Braeburn asked as he gave another nuzzle.
“Yes, and I think you’ll like the surprise that I have for us after dinner,” Soarin admitted as he gave another kiss to the stallion’s lips.
“Do we at least get a chance to eat before Ah see what outrageous thing you got this time?” Braeburn asked as he slowly shook his head.
“Trust me, I’m not letting this delicious meal go to waste. I also want to assure you that I didn’t do anything outrageous this time. I think you’ll like what I bought to celebrate our fifth anniversary,” Soarin assured as he and the apple stallion walked to the table.
The country stallion could only offer a small nod to the pegasus’ words. It wasn’t that Braeburn didn’t trust Soarin when he said that he bought something nice, but there had been a few purchases that were a little surprising. The apple stallion still took the offered gifts with grace since the two of them didn’t see each other as much as they would like. Once they were seated at the table, they started filling their plates. The country stallion noticed the Wonderbolt go for two slices of pie, and just shook his head as he chuckled internally. Once they had their plates filled with various apple products, they conversed about their days.
“So how are Spitfire and Fleetfoot doing?” Braeburn asked as he took a bite out of a fritter.
“How do you think?” Soarin teased.
“They’re already back in the hospital? Weren’t they there not even four months ago?” Braeburn questioned with a raised brow.
“It was actually two and a half months ago and yes, they are. I’m not sure what they were arguing about this time, but I can venture a guess that it was probably the same old thing,” Soarin answered as he gave a slight chuckle.
“Those mares are lucky that they can heal fast. Maybe it’s their determination that allows them to heal that quickly?” Braeburn pondered as he ate some applesauce.
“That might be one of the reasons. At least their injuries aren’t any worse than before. I’ve already seen what it’s like to be Captain for a month, and I don’t ever want to do that again. There’s just too much paperwork and I already don’t get to see my favorite stallion enough to want that extra workload.”
“Ah also think that Spitfire would throw a fit if she saw that her wingpony took her position,” Braeburn added as he passed a few apple slices to the pegasus.

“What about the mare that you’ve been lookin’ at to recruit into the team?” Braeburn asked as he finished his second plate.
“Rainbow Dash has a lot of potential to be a Wonderbolt. The only problem is her teamwork. If she was able to work with others, then she would have already joined the team,” Soarin said as he filled his plate for another helping.
“Aren’t you tryin’ to build another aerobatics team that focuses on more solo flights?”
“We are, but there’s still a lot of paperwork to fill out for that. That’s one of the other reasons why I haven’t been able to come home so often.”
“Ah could always move closer. Ah’ve said before that it’s no problem, and Ah have other family that could easily look after the farm,” Braeburn offered.
“I know you could, but I don’t want you to. You would end up having to move near Manehattan, and I don’t want to be living there. I’ve also made some nice friends here and the area has just been peaceful,” Soarin said as he smiled at the stallion across from him.
“Very well, just remember that my offer always stands,” Braeburn said, smiling at the pegasus.
“I’ll make sure, but the answer is always going to be the same,” Soarin said with a slightly determined grin.
“Is there anything else that I should know?”
“Nothing as important as I’ve already mentioned. Practice has been going well and we have a show coming up here soon in Fillydelphia. I got you a ticket so you can come and watch. How’s your day been?”
“Harvest has been kind of slow, but we’re also gettin’ ready for cider season. Applejack will be stoppin’ by with her friends to help out since Ah’ve kind of fallen behind a little.”
“Would you like an extra set of hooves to help around the farm? I am on break until Spitfire and Fleetfoot heal up,” Soarin offered.
“Ah would like that very much. Havin’ another fast flier to carry the baskets back to the barn will help speed things along.”
“Anything else you need help with? I know you do because you’ve always have some chore list hidden around here,” Soarin teased.
“Ah need to clean up the house because parents are comin’ to visit for a couple days. They’ll be here before AJ arrives to help out,” Braeburn mentioned.
