Twilight Sparkle smiled sadly - placing the old, withered diary (which contained all the adventures her friends and her had been on, and all the lessons they had learned) onto her desk which was piled high with paper, scrolls and books; all balanced neatly atop each other and awaiting eagerly for somepony to accidentally scatter them into the floor. It had been several decades since her friends had passed on and years since Spike had decided to leave her side to travel the world.
Twilight trotted over the window which showed a picturesque evening view of the ever expanding Canterlot; the Alicorn had moved to Canterlot after Pinkie Pie, the final of the surviving mane six, had passed away - the castle in Ponyville, didn't feel the same with only her and Spike residing in it. Celestia had welcomed Twilight with open hooves to her home and located her on the top floor of the Castle, so she could have peace and quiet - away from the busy castle hallway and the gardens.
The purple mare used her magic to slowly brush her long mane using the brush her friends had given her on her 50th Birthday. The brush was a light blue and had several amethysts encrusted in the back, a couple had fallen off through the years but it was one of Twilight's most precious treasures that she had received from her friends, aside from all the memories. She closed her eyes and imagined her fellow ponies, with each stroke of the brush through her thick mane she remembered their voices, their antics and their faces. She could feel tears pooling in the back of her eyes as the feeling of loneliness and sadness dawned on her once more. These past couple of years had been dark for Twilight, she had been diagnosed with Depression and the amount of stress of being a Princess was enormous. Almost too much. She took a deep breath in and exhaled through her nostrils.
Knock. Knock
"Twilight?" Celestia's regal voice called from behind the door, "We need to speak about the speeches at the Gala."
Twilight opened her eyes and felt a single tear slide down her cheek and dry into her fur. She sniffed quietly, then looked to the door and trying to mask her sudden emotional outburst, coughed slightly. "Sure, but is it o-okay if I just take a bath?" she spoke, suprised at how shaky her voice sounded.
There was a pause. "Are you okay, Twilight?"
Twilight breathed through her snout. "Yes. I think I've got a bit of a cold. I don't want to give it to anypony."
"I'll bring you some medicine,"
"It's fine, I'm okay."
"A hot water bottle?"
"It's okay, honestly."
"Some soup?"
"I'm okay, Celestia." she hissed softly, a bubble of annoyance growing on her mind.
"Some extra pillows? A glass of water?"
"No!" Twilight growled loudly, the depression and Celestia's many intrusions were just too much to take " I don't need your crappy supervision! I am going through some tough times here, I've lost everything I ever cared for - the least I need is your trash telling me what to do!"
"...I'm sorry."
Noticing how upset Celestia sounded, the purple mare softened her tone of voice quickly and spoke once more - "No, it's me who should be sorry. I-I'm just going through an emotional stage. Ugh. Celestia, I just don't know what to do....I'm alone."
There was a short pause.
"Twilight don't speak like that. I know it's hard when you start seeing your friends, family disappearing and I'm not going to lie - when I was your age..." she trailed off, her voice quivered slightly.
Twilight, using her magic, opened the door revealing a tall alicorn draped in a deep blue, silken cloth which atoned her sparkling white fur. Her mane was tied up a tight bun. It was obvious she had just come from the bathtub because tiny droplets clung to her fur and mane and there was a strong lavender smell omitting from her. Celestia looked tired, her eyes puffy and swollen. Without thinking, Twilight lifted a porcelain tea cup and poured some herbal tea which she had brewed earlier, before bringing it over to Celestia in a flurry of pink sparkles. "Come in, have some tea" she smiled softly.
The white Alicorn trotted over to the nearest leather lounger and sprawled out across it as she took the teacup and began to drink from her cup in small sips. Twilight sat on the chair next to Celestia, when Celestia pulled out a bottle of Apple Acre's Apple Cider from apparently her gown pocket on and offered it to Twilight - the purple mare accepted and started to drink the sweetly bitter liquid, the memories of the past times being recalled almost instantly. She tried to blink out the tears which were still in her eyes, she didn't mind crying in front of Celestia - she trusted her with her dear life.
The elder Princess sighed and continued what she had started, "When was around 100 years old...I didn't see the meaning of life anymore. I didn't see the point. A few times, I even contemplated death... I want to show you, what I went through, just to make sure that you don't go through what I did."
Twilight tilted her head in confusion "What do you mean, show me?"
The princess looked up to Twilight guiltily, "Well. That isn't normal cider.."
"What.." Twilight said sleepily as the magic came into effect and forced her to close her eyes, opening them to a world of suffer and pain.
