The Best of Friends
To The Gym!
Load Full StoryStudents systematically marched into the hallways as the day's final bell rang. The orchestra of metal lockers and chatter began to play. Rarity stood in front of her locker, prepared to begin her after-school routine. She stacked her books according to surface area, sharpened her pencils, put them in the pouch on her locker door, and dusted the few specs that were able to accumulate in the last day. As she was just about to finish, a loud voice rose above the ambient chatter, “Rarity!” Rarity jumped back, startled by the unexpected voice. She recomposed herself quickly.
“Oh, there you are Daisy. I was wondering where you were. We usually walk out of sixth period together.”
“I know, but I do have good news!”
“What is it?”
“I have a new date to the prom!”
Rarity paused for a bit, confused by the statement.
“Oh, wow. Isn't this like... the third one this week?”
In the most resentful tone, Daisy skillfully avoided Rarity's question, “I was expecting you to be just a little bit more enthusiastic than this.”
“Well, it's just a little surprising to see you get a new date a day before the prom.”
“You know what they say. There are plenty of fish in the sea, and when you find a better one, you've got to reel it in.”
“So, who's the better guy you've snagged?”
“PLATINUM. RECORDS.”
“Really?!” Rarity let out an uncontrollable shriek of excitement.
“Yes. I know right? The second most popular guy in school. Only behind your date you lucky mare.”
Daisy pulled Rarity close and gestured towards an imaginary wall.
“Just think about it. The two most popular girls in school are going to prom with the two most popular guys.”
“And at the most majestic and breathtaking venue too. The Manehattan Opera House. A ballroom with golden columns and silver-laced marble flooring that shimmers under the lights from the centuries-old chandeliers.”
The two gazed off in anticipation. Their minds well off into the fantasy of the perfect evening that was only a day way. At that moment, the PA system came to life in a loud beep.
“This is your principle. I regret to inform all of you that, due to a fierce snow storm, we are unable to have our prom at the Manehattan Opera House. The roads are unable to be cleared by our departure time tomorrow, and are too dangerous to drive on in their current state. We will be moving the prom to the school gym. All bus money will be refunded.”
A collective sigh of disappointment overcame the room. The daydreams of Daisy and Rarity evaporated as they began to grasp the gravity of the terrible news.
“The school gym? Why can't the pegasus ponies just work harder?!” Rarity said in protest of the news.
“I know. That's so lame!”
“The greatest night of our lives is now ruined!”
“Well, don't worry Rarity. It might not be all bad. We'll still be the group everypony is talking about. And who doesn't love attention?”
Rarity nodded in agreement. Daisy was her best friend, and as long as she was with her, prom would be amazing.
