Prologue: Memories

Princess Celestia sat down in the royal dining hall by herself. She sipped her tea and ate a few delicious strawberry crumpets before thanking the servants on her way out, then waited on the balcony just off the north tower. She still had another hour before raising the sun, but that wasn't why she had come. She was hoping to catch her sister Luna before she went to bed in the west tower.

Celestia remembered when they had built the new castle. They could not bear to live in the old one after their parents had died, and the surrounding forest had grown too much anyway. It had been Luna's idea to build one tower in each direction of the map. Celestia had happily agreed on the condition that she could have her bedroom in the east tower since the sun rose in the east. Therefor Luna slept in the west tower opposite her sister. And as for the other two towers, it had just made sense; the north tower would look out onto Canterlot, with a glimpse of the possible future. And the south tower would face the everfree forest, with the crumbling ruins of their past.

Some days she wished she could give all her life for one more day of friendship with her sister, no, she wished that everyday.
