Years ago, there was a rebellion that shattered equestria into twelve districts and a capitol. The capitol ruled over the districts and protected them, but with a price. To remember the battle, 24 different ponies were forced to play a game every year. Win, and you shall be crowned that years victor. But you can only win if the rest are dead.
