Twilight Sparkle opened her door to an angry mob of the town's ponies.
"She stole my baby just to do a trick!" Mrs. Cake shouted out.
"She told me I'd never be fit to join the wonderbolts!" A random winged stallion cried.
"She made it rain on my parade! Literally!" A mare called. In the distance, a blue pony was hoping merrily on a cloud while buckets full of rain poured all over the parade marching directly below.
"OK, everypony. Calm down. One at a time..." The lavender alicorn tried frantically to get everypony's attention. After a while, she yelled above the rest. "WHAT IN EQUESTRIA IS GOING ON?!"
A gray pony with white hair, Mayor Mare, stepped forward and bowed, making Twilight blush. She still wasn't used to ponies bowing to here wherever she went. Mayor Mare stood up straight, looking Twilight dead in the eye.
"Princess Twilight Sparkle." The Mayor said calmly. "Rainbow Dash has been-exceeding her..." The mare cleared the throat. "Ego." She finished. Twilight took a tiny step back, confused.
"What are you talking about? She's always 'exceeding' her ego." Twilight said, rolling her eyes as she said 'exceeding'.
"Princess, I doubt you understand. See, Rainbow Dash has exceeded as in, beyond apology. As in, beyond forgiveness." The gray mare said calmly, with a bit of worry sprinkled in. "Us citizens are angry and scared at what she may think of doing next. Twilight, could you please cast some sort of spell on Rainbow Dash so she'll stop?"
Twilight was taken aback with shock. Normally, Ponyville citizens were very forgiving ponies. Regaining herself, She took a step forward. "I can't take away Rainbow's personality." She said to the town. The blue pony on the cloud, Twilight noticed as she spoke, had disapeered. "And that includes her ego." She continued. "I do have a spell for this type of situation, but I refuse to us i--"
"Hey, Twilight!' A Rainbow Dash face suddenly blocked Twilight's view. Startled, the lavender alicorn let out a burst of magic, hitting Rainbow Dash square on the forehead. Moaning, Rainbow Dash fell to the ground like a sack of potatoes.
"Oh, my gosh! Rainbow Dash!" Twilight cried. She didn't mean to hurt her friend like that. She also didn't mean to cast a spell on her.
"Uhm, we'll just...come back later..." The Mayor said awkwardly. With that, she and the citizens ran off in different directions, not wanting to be near the castle, in case her majesty accidentally killed Rainbow.
Twilight lifted Rainbow Dash inside the castle and put her on a bed in a guest bedroom. "It'll be fine." She said, more to herself than the unconscious blue pegasus. She left the room, silently closing the door behind her.
Twilight heard Rainbow Dash coming downstairs even before she appeared. The loud banging made her certain that her friend was up and trying to fly down.
Twilight teleported to the top of the stairs, looking around. There, she saw her friend trying to rise above the banister, but falling down each time.
"Rainbow Dash, you shouldn't be flying, especially this soon after the spell." Twilight said. Rainbow Dash drifted to the ground to look at the princess.
"Twilight, I think I can handle it." She responded coolly. "I AM the best fl-"
She was cut off by Twilight's hoof pressed against her mouth. "Don't say another word." Twilight whispered.
Rainbow moved away from Twi's hoof. "Why?" She asked.
"Remember that blast of magic that hit you before you fell unconscious?" Twilight asked.
Rainbow nodded.
"Well, it was a 'Ego-Catastrophe' spell." Twilight continued.
"A what now?" Rainbow asked.
"A Ego-Catastrophe spell." Twilight replied. "It does dangerous things to those who 'exceed there ego's'." Twilight put quote marks around 'exceed their ego's'.
Rainbow laughed. "Twilight, I have no clue why you would want to cast a Ego-Catastrophe spell. I mean, I know it wasn't for me. My ego's still in check."
Just then, a giant root from Twilight's chandler fell. It almost landed on the blue pegasus, but, luckily, she dodged it. "Whoa." she said. "What was that all about?"
"Like I said." Twilight answered. "It does bad things to big ego's."
"What's wrong with a big ego?!" Rainbow cried. She paused. "Not that I have one, of cour-" She dodged another root, and looked up. "Let's go somewhere...safer." Rainbow said.
"Good idea."
Inside Twilight's bedroom, the two ponies continued their conversation. "What is wrong with a big ego?" Rainbow asked again.
"Nothing!" Twilight claimed. "It's just, all of the townsponies were asking me to put a type of spell on you, to help shrink your ego. I denied, but, you startled me and, I guess, it was in my mind and it accidentally shot out."
"Oh." Rainbow quipped.
"I didn't mean to do it on purpose!" Twilight declared.
"I know, Twilight." Rainbow said. "I'm just upset at all the townsponies. They wanted to get rid of a part of me that I've had forever. And it's the best part!" Outside, some foals were playing kickball. One kicked to hard and it went soaring through the air, only to bonk Rainbow on the cheek, then ricochet back. Rainbow didn't respond.
"There is a cure." Twilight suggested.
"Really?! What is it?" Rainbow asked.
"Well, you might not exactly like it." Twilight replied.
Outside in the courtyard, Twilight and Rainbow were calling attention to all the ponies. The whole town was there, watching the parade the mare had mentioned earlier float by.
"Everypony, listen up!" Twilight called. "Rainbow Dash would like to say a few words."
Some of the ponies in the crowd grumbled and moaned. The rest protested.
"Is she gonna tell us all how awesome she is?!" A stallion called out.
"No, she isn't." Twilight called back.
"Actually, that does sound better than-" Rainbow Dash started, but stopped quickly as the awning above her fell with a crash. She barley dodged it and climbed to the top so she could see everypony better. "No, I'm not." Rainbow repeated, sounding deflated.
"I want to say I'm sorry for being a massive jerk." She said. "I guess I need to think of other ponies once in a while, and not focus on me and how awesome I am." Realizing her mistake, she looked around frantically. But, nothing happened. Recovering slowly, she looked out into the crowd.
"I meant, I bet all of you are as awesome as me in your own way! I shouldn't be bragging about it." She paused. "As much." She added in a whisper that only she and Twilight could hear.
Twilight gave her a glare, the looked out in the the crowd. "She hopes you all can forgive her." Twilight added.
"Forgive her?!" The parade-hosting mare called out.
"Why not?" Some random pony said, his voice breaking through the stilled silence. "That was a good speech."
Everypony cheered and crowd-surfed Rainbow away, Rainbow nearly being blasted by a bolt of lightning.
She flew back over to Twilight and pointed at the scorch mark it left on the ground. "I though the curse was over." Rainbow said.
"It is." Twilight replied. "I guess it's just karma." Shrugging, Twilight walked back to her castle. Rainbow zoomed above the clouds and rested on them, knowing nothing could hurt her from now on. The curse was over, and everything would be OK.
A week later, Twilight got an urgent knock on her door.
"Twilight, we need your help!" Mayor Mare desperately cried as the town stood behind her. "Applejack is being to honest!"
"Mayor, I don't mean to offend you, but, I think you need to stop complaining about my friends. However, I do have a nifty spell that comes in han-" She was cut off by Applejack's voice.
"Twilight, what are all them ponies here for?" AJ asked.
"GAH!" Twilight gasped, shooting off a magic beam. It ricocheted off of a nearby house, and hit AJ on the forehead. Groaning, Applejack fell to the ground with a small thud.
"OK, well, you seem busy..." The mayor said. Again, she and every pony darted out of sight. And, again, Twilight lifted Applejack into the same guest room Rainbow Dash was in a week before.
