A Changed Townby RockingEndChaptersChapter 2: PatrolChapter 3: InvestigationChapter 4: SilentChapter 1: Old FriendsChapter 2: PatrolIt was just after midday, Celestia's sun casting its warm glow throughout Canterlot. Perfect temperature for a stroll, or any kind of outdoor activity, really... But you wouldn't think it walking down the streets, barren, abandonned... On occasion, a few ponies could be seen inside shops, trying to go about their usual business... But there was just a feeling in the air that made everything seem... Off... "It sure is... Quiet..." Shockwave piped up, the rookie that had been assigned to Moonlight's patrol for the day. Shockwave was a fairly quiet unicorn, with a white coat and a long unkempt navy blue mane and a similar tail. She had graduated from Canterlot's college for gifted unicorns a year before she enlisted with the guard. She had majored in offencive spells and hexxes, and was one of the more talented recruits to come by in quite some time. Her cutie mark was a deep blue sphere of what looked like magic energy. "Get used to it... Nopony wants to walk around this time of day, it was just about the same time the Changelings first attacked..." Moonlight responded. "It's almost funny how everypony seemingly forgot about the Royal Wedding after it happened and just focussed on the attack..." "I know, but... It's safe now, why is everypony so paranoid about the outside?" "You can't really blame em'. I mean, you watch your entire town get ransacked by a species almost nopony has ever heard of... You're gonna be a little bit paranoid. Heck, everypony should be worried... We're not out of it yet... Not until all of Equestria and the surrounding area is declared 'Changeling Free'... Psh, yeah right..." "What? You don't have faith in the teams searching?" Shockwave sounded concerned by her superior's words. "It's not that I don't have faith... It's just that they're gonna be scouring all of Equestria... They're bound to miss someplace, and that could be where the Changelings are hiding..." Moonlight retorted. "Y'know, that sounds pretty much like 'no faith'..." "Noted, but think about it, if we're at war, we can't trust anypony else to do our work for us. Instead of sending a few ponies over to our lovely Griffon neighbours to the east to look out for Changelings, we send them a nicley written letter, warning them and asking them to look for us. I hate politics..." Shockwave glanced at her superior, preparing her response. Although before she could voice it, a yell interrupted the exchange. "Help! It's one of those things!" A panicked, elderly voice could be heard in the distance. Moonlights ears pricked up, before he quickly spun around, lifting himself off the ground, preparing to fly off toward the disturbance. "Looks like this discussion will have to wait, Shock. Sounds like we got trouble on our hands." "Yes, sir." Moonlight sighed, "One last thing... Can we cut the formalities, they bug the heck outta me..." "Uh... Yes, sir, Gen- Er... Moonlight..." "You'll get used to it... It's just how I prefer to operate." Moonlight said, grinning. "Heh... Right..." In a split second, Moonlight's friendly grin turned to a look of determination, right before he sped off in the direction of the call for help. "Hey! Wait up!" Shock called from below, before sighing and following the sound on foot. "How am I expected to help out if you're just gonna fly off like that..." She mumbled. "Because last time has to be exactly that, the last time." Crimson finished the same speech for what seemed like the tenth time today, Moonlight was right... It does get a little old after a while... Crimson's newest group of recruits dispersed, moving off to their various training exercises. Although Crimson's focus was elsewhere, a feeling of paranoia he hadn't been able to shake since speaking with another group of recruits earlier... Something about the bunch just felt... Off... But Crimson just couldn't put his hoof on it. "Er... General?" Crimson perked up, turning to the source of the interruption. Dull Sword, a recruit from his latest group was standing before him, a confident look on his face. "Oh, what is it Sword?" Crimson responded. "I just wanted to know... Uh... How come we're waiting here for the Changelings to come to us? Shouldn't we be going after them right now?" Dull Sword wasn't the brightest recruit amongst the group, his cutie mark resembling his name, a rusted looking sword, possibly symbolizing his lack of intellectual ability, but he made up for it with spirit and power. He was a regular Earth Pony, supposedly moved to Canterlot after the attack from Ponyville... Although nopony had reported seeing him around town before he signed up. Crimson thought this was suspicious, considering an attack shouldn't draw ponies to migrate to the area in question... "General?" Crimson's thoughts were interrupted a second time, maybe he was overthinking this. "Oh, well... We have ponies on that, checking Equestria for Changelings. Until we know where they all are, if they are still anywhere near Equestria, that is... We can't just go charging around the country with our weapons drawn... Ponies might get more than a little worried... For now, it's more of a political situation... Keep the public calm and such." Dull looked at the ground for a while, seemingly lost within Crimson's words... Confused, maybe... After a few minutes, the general sighed and continued awaiting a response, almost losing himself in thought once more. Suddenly, Dull Sword's gaze lifted from the ground back to Crimson. "Oh, right!" He responded happily before trudging off with the rest of the group. "Jeez, are we really that desperate? That we just let anypony with at least half a brain into the guard now..." Crimson sighed, muttering to himself. Moonlight came to a halt outside of the building where the argument had originated from. By now, a small crowd had gathered outside, trying to figure out what was going on inside. "I know what I saw! You're one of them... Changer... Things!" An old, frail voice shouted from within the building. This prompted Moonlight to make his way through the crowd, the words had caused some ponies around to panic and back away from the door, fearing what may be about to happen. "Okay everypony, calm down we're here to resolve this. If you could all please back away from the building, it would be appreciated." Moonlight called, attempting to calm the crowd and get them to leave before the situation could escalate. Some ponies amongst the crowd backed away further, some leaving the area entirley. The prescence of guards didn't really mean the situation was just a misunderstanding. It usually meant trouble wasn't far. Moonlight proceeded through the remainder of the crowd, making his way to the door. A little further down the road came an exhausted Shockwave, who had to sprint a quarter of the way across the city in order to keep up with her General. "Jeez, can you warn me next time you're gonna just fly off or something like that!?" "We can't take any chances when it comes to trouble around here now. You'll get used to it, don't worry." Moonlight responded. The two entered the building, expecting to find a changeling. Instead finding nothing but silence and broken glass. "Get back!" A glass bottle, filled with a glowing purple liquid narrowly missed Moonlights head, shattering against the wall at the far side of the room. "I don't want any of you Changers near me!" Moonlight immediatley scanned the room, searching for the source of the bottle. The interior of the building was filled with these kinds of potions, a small banner hung over a counter reading 'Crucible's Potions and Medications'. Cruicible was a respectable pharmaceuticals salespony in Canterlot, owning two shops at either side of the city. In the corner of the room, two figures could be seen standing in plain view. One of them was a startled looking old mare, her mane was frazzled and messy, clearly she was the one who had thrown the bottle. The other pony on the other hand, a unicorn stallion, Cruicible, looked calm and quite unharmed. The older mare reached for another nearby bottle to throw. "Woah, woah, woah!" Moonlight called across the room, grabbing the attention of the two in the corner. "What's going on here?" Both ponies tried to cut in at the same time, almost causing their argument to pick up again before Moonlight could intervene a second time. "Alright! Both of you, calm down!" Both ponies looked startled by the sudden outburst from Moonlight. "Ma'am, give me your side of the story." He said, gesturing toward the old, shaken mare. The old mare remained still, shaking slightly. "I... I was just here to get some medicine, you see... B-but when I came inside, nopony was around, so I called out, 'hello?'. Then I saw all this green flashing from the other room." The mare pointed her hoof toward a door opposite the counter. "Then he came out! He's one of them changers, I tell ya!" "Oh, you're kidding, right?" Shockwave piped up, in disbelief from the random accusation. "Don't worry about it, Shock..." Moonlight sighed, sharing Shock's annoyance. "Okay then. You, Cruicible, I presume. What do you have to say?" "Her story is ridiculous!" Cruicible responded, "I was in the back room enchanting some potions with my magic, when I heard her come in, so I finished up my work and then came to serve her! Next thing I know, she's throwing bottles at me!" "Alright... Would you mind if I checked out your workspace Cruicible?" "Wait," Shockwave interrupted. "We're actually checking this out?!" "It's standard procedure... In the case of any kind of incriminating accusation, we usually have to check around, just to be sure..." Moonlight replied, "Now, could I see the shop's back room, please?" Suddenly Cruicible's tone changed to one of panic, "Erm... W-why would you need to look in there? I assure you nothing is wrong." Shockwave looked at Cruicible suspiciously. "Hold up... You said you were enchanting potions, right?" "Er... Yes..." "I've studied medications and potions, you shouldn't need magic enchantments to make medicine... What were you enchanting them with?" Cruicible went silent, a worried look taking over his face. "You were asked a question. What were you making these potions do?" Moonlight restated the question with a much more serious tone. "N-nothing! I was making them do... Er... Nothing..." "Stop making excuses for yourself! There are other ways we can make you tell us. So if you speak up now, maybe we can save some time... And some of your teeth." A scowl replaced Moonlights serious frown, his tone was very intimidating. "Er... G-General?" Shockwave was worried by Moonlight's sudden, erratic behavior. What sounded like a squeak came from Cruicible's throat, followed by a rather loud confession, "Alright! I admit it! I was enchanting them so that anypony who drank them would become addicted to the potion! It still treats them and keeps them in good health! What's the harm!?" "The harm? This may as well be a scam!" Moonlight responded, "You're practically stealing bits from everypony! That's illegal!" Shockwave led the older mare outside, making sure the last of the crowd dispersed and checking that the mare was alright and unharmed while Moonlight continued questioning Cruicible. A few minutes later, Shockwave returned inside, and was immediatley ordered to head back to the Castle and have a team better suited to investigation sent over. Crimson followed behind the investigation team, getting the full story from Shockwave on the way. He was concerned. From what he had heard, Moonlight's behaviour was much more aggresive than usual... He always seemed to be slightly more level-headed in a serious situation... Upon arriving at Cruicible's Pharmacy, the group entered the building one by one, closely followed by Crimson and Shockwave. Moonlight started directing the team to study the customer records and confiscate any harmful product. He barely noticed Crimson's presence in the room. "Moonlight? You alright?" Crimson asked, concerned for his friend. Moonlight grunted in response, not even glancing over at Crimson. "Sir? Listen, we've got this under control, go get some air." Shockwave suggested, "You look like you could use it..." Moonlight sighed. "Yeah... Maybe you're right..." He responded, before making his way out to the streets to take a reprieve from the situation at hand. Crimson followed him. "Moonlight, you sure you're ok?" Crimson asked again. The two Generals sat down outside, fatigued by the events of the day. Moonlight hesitated before responding, "I don't know... I guess everypony is a little on edge since the attack..." Crimson gave a chuckle, "Yeah, I guess we could all use a little vacation... Aliktor sound ok to you?" "Heh... I don't think I'd ever want to go back there in my lifetime... I still find it hard to believe that the Griffons are able to play nice with Equestria now." "Oh, how the times have changed..." "Heh, Yeah..." "Moonlight, sir." A guardspony emerged from Cruicible's. "Almost forgot to mention this..." Moonlight stood up, turning to his fellow guard with interest. "Princess Celestia has requested to speak with you." "Me? What for?" Moonlight responded. "Not sure, sir. I'm just the messenger here. If you want to know you'll have to go and find out for yourself..." Moonlight sighed once more. "Alright... No rest for the weary, I suppose... Dismissed, Private." "Yes, sir." The guardspony returned to the pharmacy, leaving the two Generals once more. "It doesn't end, does it?" Crimson asked. "You and I should both know by now that it doesn't..." Moonlight replied, "I'll talk to you later... I had better go find out what's so important." "Heh, yeah... Good luck, buddy." Chapter 3: InvestigationFor the last few hours, Cruicible's pharmacy had been under an extensive investigation. Multiple guards poked through stock, store records and even some of Cruicible's personal belongings to find any further evidence that would further insinuate his guilt. So far the search had turned up crates and boxes filled with 'enchanted' potions, a few records of customer complaints to do with the 'addicting nature' of Cruicible's medications and the stallion's personal journal. As well as that, the mare who ran Cruicible's second shop at the opposite end of Canterlot had been brought in for questioning. So far, the guard had concluded that she was unaware of Cruicible's intentions with the bottles and just thought that ponies in the region became ill very frequently. Behind the counter, Crimson was explaining the reason behind Cruicible's incrimination to him. Sticking around with Shockwave and the others, Crimson was making sure the situation remained under control and Cruicible didn't try anything stupid. It was a welcome change for him. Usually he would stand around, giving speeches to recruits and occasionally running training exercises. "But you don't understand! Making enchantments isn't illegal! I never would have done it if it was!" Cruicible argued. "Okay, smart guy. Tell me, is stealing illegal?" Crimson retorted, going over this for what felt like the thousandth time with the old apothecary. "Well, yes... But-" "Then you're breaking the law. Because this can be considered a scam, and scamming somepony is just as bad as stealing from 'em." Crimson sighed. "Now, do you understand that?" Cruicible went silent and began staring at his hooves, clearly he had no further cards to play. Crimson sat down and sighed contently, keeping a watchful eye on Cruicible. Although the old colt wasn't likley to make a run for it, like Moonlight always said, 'it never hurts to be vigilant'. Meanwhile, Shockwave was speaking with Cruicible's apprentice of sorts, the mare who ran his other shop. "No... He had never told me about these 'enchantments'... He was teaching me to make medicines and letting me run the other store but that was it! I had no idea he was stealing from ponies!" The mare cried, frightened by her current situation. This was the reason Shockwave was called over, although at times Shock liked to remain silent, she was adept at keeping ponies calm as well. "Don't worry, nothing is gonna happen to you ma'am, we just need to be sure that you had nothing to do with this." "I don't!" The mare had tears in her eyes, she looked as if she was just old enough to have finished college. Obviously the accusation of both her and her mentor being criminals was very traumatizing for her. "It's alright. Can you do me a favour? Just wait here for a minute or two, we just need to make sure everything is in order." "Okay..." She responded meekly, sniffling. Shockwave left the worried mare and joined the conversing of the other guards in the pharmacy. "How're we doing?" Shockwave asked. "We have enough evidence to convict him, we're just trying to decide on what to do with his business while he's, uh... 'Away'" One of the guards responded. "I say we just leave the place to rot and give it back to 'im when he gets out..." Another added. "We can't do that. For one thing, we don't know if he's gonna be put away for this or not, and what's stopping him from trying it again afterwards?" A third guard argued. "We should just take the place apart, close it down for good. Make sure the old guy doesn't get an opportunity to repeat this." "Both good arguments. The problem is, he probably wouldn't be allowed to run a shop again after this little... 'setback', and the best he would get for this would be a little while incarcerated and a pretty nasty fine... But don't worry, I have another soloution." Crimson joined in. "Shockwave, you've been speaking with his 'apprentice' for awhile now, would you say that she's fit to run the place? She has the experience." Upon hearing mention of herself, the mare in the corner looked up, confusion in her eyes. "Me?" "Well, you are experienced with medicines and potion making from what you've told me. Plus, you've been running Cruicible's other store for long enough to know the trick of the trade..." Shockwave added. "Right, and the place would be yours. You could decide what to do with it, and you would get to decide how the profits are used. Instead of working for Cruicible, you'd be working for yourself." Crimson said. The mare stood up, a look of purpose taking over her face. "Yeah... You're right! I could run this place! I could fix it all up, make some bits and maybe even start up my own chain!" "Heh heh, one step at a time, ma'am" Shockwave laughed. The other guardsponies in the room shared a laugh, things seemed to be falling into place for everypony... Well, except for- "Ahem!" Everypony in the room went silent and turned to the source of the interruption, Cruicible, who was still sitting behind the counter, looking very frustrated. "I believe you're all forgetting that this is still my store! You can't just give it away like that!" "Be that as it may, after this, you're not going to be able to keep this place open for long. Nopony will want to buy from somepony who might be using them for his own gain." Crimson responded. "You would start losing bits, use what little common sense you may have to do the smart thing here. How about you sign the place over to your apprentice here." "Er... My name is Spirit... Spirit Leaf..." The mare spoke up. Shockwave went a little red in the face, "Heh, I knew there was something I forgot to ask..." The silence in the room was replaced by another quiet round of laughs from the guards, as well as Spirit. Cruicible, on the other hand, remained seated, considering his options. "How about this?" Spirit said, "I take over the store, we close the other one down. And after Cruicible serves whatever sentence he gets, he could come and help me run the place. He could work for me." Crimson stood up, moving from behind the counter to join the group of guards. "It's a risky idea, what if Cruicible tries something like this again?" "I'd be in charge. I'd make sure that he wouldn't." Spirit argued. "Hm... Sounds like a solid plan..." Crimson said. "What do you think, Cruicible? You'd still get to be involved with the place, so it isn't like you'd be forced into retirement." Cruicible sighed, "I suppose that's the best I can hope for... Isn't it?" The colt stood up, using his magic to unlock a small strongbox under the counter, obtaining a piece of paper, most likley the deed from it. "Maybe you'll do more good with this place than I did... Just don't make the same mistake as me." He leviteted the deed over to Spirit, whose eyes widened at the offer. "Thank you, sir-" Spirit went to respond. "I think that 'Cruicible' will do for now, Spirit." "Thanks, Cruicible..." Spirit replied, "I won't let you down." "Cruicible, now that everything is dealt with, we're going to have to bring you into Canterlot Castle, you'll have a trail in a few days time, whatever happens to you from there on is out of our hands." Crimson said, almost saddened by the fact that he had bring the old colt in. Cruicible looked at the General, nodded and gave a slight smile. "Look on the bright side, I've never been to the castle before..." The old stallion's smile faded, "This isn't the way I thought I would get to, though..." Crimson led the colt outside, the rest of the guards followed. Except for Shockwave. "Hey Spirit, good luck with all of this. I'll make sure somepony who can help you start everything up comes by within the next day or so." Shock smiled at the mare, glad that some good could come of the situation. "Thanks so much, er..." "Shockwave." She added with another quick smile. "Thank you." Spirit added, before Shockwave followed after the other guards. Chapter 4: SilentMoonlight walked across the training ground, a group of guards sparring and preparing for their evening postings scattered about the place, almost oblivious to their existence, the General walked through the area, a sea of thoughts and questions swimming around in his head. Combined with a feeling of nervousness he hadn't felt in years. Sure, he had been on guard assignments within the castle before, but that wasn't what was concerning him. What was however, was the fact that he, personally, had been called for an audience with Princess Celestia herself. It wouldn't have been the first time speaking with her of course, there had been plenty of moments with his recruits and fellow guardsponies around, and even then, he wasn't the focus of the meeting. But something felt different about this... Maybe it was because he may be the only one there... Maybe it was just worries that this may indicate some kind of problem with the Changelings... Moonlight sighed, "This isn't the time to be concerned... Maybe later, but not before you even know what's going on." He mumbled to himself. After another few minutes of walking, Moonlight found himself within Canterlot Castle, he always hated having to patrol here... Too quiet... The kind of quiet where all you can hear is your own footsteps, no birds chirping outside, definitley not the shouting and background noise of Canterlot's usual busy streets. Occasionally a group of Celestia's Elite Royal Guard would be seen guarding a particular door. Some saluted Moonlight as he walked by. Merely out of respect, they weren't required to, as they operated outside of the usual guard. Not all of them were bad ponies, but a vast majority of them were incredibly self-absorbed and egotistical, that was one of the reasons Moonlight had turned down a request to join them back in his younger years. They retained little respect for others and were only concerned about themselves outside of an emergency. Granted, they would gladly give their lives protecting the royal family. But that was it. Most of them showed no concern for the general public. Most of them. Truth be told, there was nothing really 'Elite' about them... They are just given the title to symbolize that they are to prioritize the lives of those on higher rungs of society instead of those in more need. Although Moonlight knew that wasn't the case for all of them, he had many old friends in their ranks, and those that saluted him were good examples of ponies who knew more than just their title of 'Elite'... Examples of those who would give their lives for the public as well as a princess. Moonlight's footsteps echoed throughout the silent hallways of the castle, he stopped at a door, much larger than the others, guarded by 4 'Elites'. One of the guards saluted, before recieving a strange look from the others. "General Moonlight. Princess Celestia told us you were coming." The saluting guard stated. "Dude, you're not meant to salute him! He's not one of us!" One of the others replied. "Oh, really? So everything he did in Aliktor should just be ignored then, huh? He's done a lot more than we'll probably ever get the chance to do. I think he deserves some respect. Don't you guys?" The saluting colt replied. After a moments hesitation, each guard aside from the arguing one saluted the General. "Aliktor... That brings back a lot of memories... Not a lot of good ones, unfortunatley... I don't like to call Griffon territory that anymore... Not after everything that happened there." Moonlight said, his eyes lost in his own memory. "I understand sir, I'm sorry, I meant no disrespet by bringing it up..." The colt replied. "Don't worry yourself about it... Now, if you don't mind, I believe I have an audience with Celestia." "Of course, sir." The colt stood aside, pulling the door open as he did so. Moonlight exchanged a glance with the one colt who didn't salute. "You know, you could learn something from your friends here." All he recieved in response was a cold scowl. 'Disappointing' was all Moonlight could think before walking through the doorway. The throne room of the castle was one of the largest rooms in the building, window panes depicting noteworthy events in Equestrian history. The one that caught Moonlight's attention was one of his own past. The glass was sperated into two sides... One, depicting a number of large, unyielding Griffons. The other, a great army of Equestrians... The Griffon War, is what it had become known as, Moonlight had experienced those days firsthand... "Ah, General Moonlight. I see you recieved my message." A voice came from across the large room. Memories for another time, Moonlight thought, before turning to meet the gaze of Princess Celestia. After a moment of silence, Moonlight bowed his head. "I did." "Good." Celestia walked over to another window pane, the most recently added. Shining Armor, the Captain of the Royal Guard, and his wife, Princess Mi Amore Cadenza, or just 'Princess Cadence' for short, standing above an army of dark faces, each one with a set of turquoise eyes. "I've called you here because you and the other Generals are the closest thing we have to leadership among the guard." Moonlight looked confused, "What happened to Shining Armor?" The Princess looked down with worry, "That's just it, we aren't sure... He was supposed to be back from his honeymoon days ago... He was making a stop in Ponyville before his scheduled return to Canterlot." "I see... Any news from the town?" "No..." Celestia looked back up at the glass pane, a worried look spread across her face. "I've sent letters to my student, Twilight Sparkle, who resides in Ponyville... But she hasn't responded to them... I fear for their safety, given the current state of Equestria..." Moonlight remained silent, waiting for the Princess to continue. "This is why I've asked you here... I would like you to investigate. Assemble a group to accompany you. If the situation is as I fear, then you cannot travel there by train. You, of all ponies are aware of what importance stealth holds..." "I understand... How soon are we required to leave?" The General asked. "As soon as you are able, I expect you'll need some time to select those able to accompany you." Crimson led the investigating team back toward the castle, their lawbreaker in check, following along with the group. Since leaving his pharmacy, Cruicible had been cooperating with the guards, maybe looking for some sympathy. The castle's gates were now in view, the old stallion sighed, accepting his fate as they drew closer. After passing through the gates, Crimson and Shockwave broke off from the group. "Alright everypony, great work today, we appreciate the help." Crimson called after them. Shockwave sighed, "Well, today was... Interesting. To say the least. I, for one, can't wait to get home and rest for the night..." "Heh, I'm with ya', but something you'll learn is that once one thing is out of the way, something else pops out at you." Crimson responded. "Speaking of which..." Crimson trailed off, glancing at the main entrance to Canterlot Castle's main hall, the figure of Moonlight Shadow stepping out and heading toward the gates. "Moonlight, how did everything go?" Crimson asked. The dark grey stallion looked up at Crimson and Shockwave. "Funny thing about that... Remember how earlier today you were talking about a vacation?" "Hah, so they finally saw the light and fired you, huh?" Crimson joked. "Permanent vacation, if you ask me." "Very funny." Moonlight responded with a sarcastic laugh, "The two of you should come with me, I can explain along the way..." Shockwave sighed, "You just had to jinx it, didn't you... Erm... General Crimson..." Crimson laughed, "Don't say I didn't warn you, rookie." "You two, let's go." Moonlight said, walking past the two of them, "We've got some work to do." Chapter 1: Old FriendsCanterlot. An amazing representation of the best architecture and engineering Equestria has to offer. The capital city seemingly etched into the side of a mountain. Not only that, but the class, sophistication and not to mention the royalty that resides within the cities walls... Or, at least that's how it was seen before the Changelings attacked... Now, streets amidst the city lay almost empty for the most part of the day, ponies too paranoid to go about their usual business... Some ponies left altogether, afraid that the city would be attacked again... Now, that wasn't to say that nopony roamed the streets at all, some of the more optimistic occupants of the capital still carried on with their daily routine. One thing was for sure. The city wouldn't be the same for a long, long time. Occasionally along the streets, patrols of Canterlot's esteemed Royal Guard would be seen, observing their surroundings for anything that could be considered suspisious or threatening to the citizens of the once vibrant, busy city. Moonlight Shadow, a general of Celestia's royal guard swept over the city, keeping an eye on the streets... He was technically off duty, but it never hurts to be vigilant, nopony saw the Changelings coming until it was too late... It could have been avoided, but nopony was really to blame... After all, with everypony caught up in the festivities of the royal wedding, who could have seen the attack coming? The General's coat was a dark gray, his black mane flowing with the wind as he soared over the barren streets, on his way to Canterlot Castle's Barracks, so he could begin his patrol for the day. A cloud came into view, sitting just over the training grounds within Canterlot Castle, this was usually where new recruits would be taken for their initiation and training drills. The General slowed and descended onto the cloud, his mane falling into its usual frazzled, unkempt place. Gazing down into the grounds, another pegasus could be seen, pacing and speaking to a group of new recruits. "That's why we're here, to make sure that any, and every member of the royal family comes to no harm! To make sure that in the worst case scenario, Canterlot still stands! To make sure that everypony in Equestria can feel safe at night!" The pegasus said, pride and determination clear in his voice. "Heh, as usual... Crimson never misses a beat." Moonlight mumbled to nopony in particular. Crimson Shield was one of Moonlight's best and only friends, they had met in Cloudsdale in their foalhood, stickng together all throughout flight school and onward. They were both keen on the idea of joining up with the Royal Guard when they moved to Canterlot after finishing their last summester of schooling... And today, they both held the rank of General, still vying to prove to one another who is the best. A round of cheering and yelling broke Moonlight's trail of thought. Crimson had just finished his speech, and boy, were the recruits excited. Moonlight yawned. Sure, Crimson was good, but he could do much better. Moonlight chuckled at his own sarcastic thoughts, so what if Crimson was better at the awe-inspiring speeches. Out of the two, he considered himself to be the best when it came down to their actual job. Although the guard didn't handle as many military-typed operations that it used to, back in their younger days, the two had done some crazy things in the guard. During the time when relations between Equestrians and the Griffons were falling apart. The two Generals were almost opposites when it came to their fields of expertise. Moonlight prefering a concealed, stealthy approach to things and Crimson preferring to charge into battle head on. Their cutie marks reflected this, Moonlight's being a dark silhouette of a pony, which almost faded in with his dark coat, and Crimson's being a set of crossed swords, accompanied by a shield behind them. The recruits had fallen back to silence, Crimson gathering them around for one last rally. "One last thing, everypony. You need to treat the next few weeks very seriously... Although not many ponies would like to admit it, we may be on the verge of a war. All of you saw what happened to Canterlot when the Changelings took us by suprise last time. You need to remain vigilant both on and off duty. Because last time has to be exactly that, the last time." Another round of cheers and enthusiastic yells came from the group. "Now you all have the information about your postings for the day, and you all know who is meant to be supervising you. Dismissed!" Slowly, Crimson's group disbanded, heading off to their daily patrols. Crimson smiled proudly, content with his work on the speech. Although the royal guard wasn't much of a military branch, Crimson always liked to think of it as if it were. Crimson's attention was caught by an over-exaggerated yawn coming from above him. Craning his neck upwards he found the source. Moonlight Shadow. "You don't like to mix things up at all do you?" Moonlight asked, "I mean, I've heard you give that exact same speech four or five times this week! I get it, it's gotta be- no, it will be the last time." Crimson smiled, "It's better than whatever you'd come up with and you know it." He laughed. "Ha!" Moonlight retorted, "Are you kidding me?! I could beat that in my sleep!" "Well, go on then." Crimson challenged, smiling while Moonlight stood in thought, trying to come up with something that was even half-decent. Moonlight suddenly stood upright, puffing out his chest and putting on his best impression of Crimson's voice. "Now listen up, rookies! You need to be serious for the next few weeks! That means no joking around! Nopony wants to say it, but we are almost, on the verge, of war-" Crimson glanced away, planting his face in his hoof. "How am I doing?" Moonlight asked sarcastically. "Is that what you think that I sound like?" Crimson asked, no longer bothering to keep his laughter at bay. "That was awful." "Really? Because that's almost the exact same speech you just gave." Moonlight added, laughing along with his friend. "Keep believing that, buddy." Laughing the remainder of the morning away, Moonlight left to prepare for his patrols while Crimson got ready for the next group of recruits to rally.
Chapter 2: PatrolIt was just after midday, Celestia's sun casting its warm glow throughout Canterlot. Good luck, buddy."
Chapter 3: InvestigationFor the last few hours, Cruicible's pharmacy had been under an extensive investigation.
Erm... General Crimson..." Crimson laughed, "Don't say I didn't warn you, rookie." "You two, let's go." Moonlight said, walking past the two of them, "We've got some work to do."
Chapter 1: Old FriendsCanterlot.
