To Parts Well Known

Rain and wind whipped across the window of Alex’s bedroom, though he hardly noticed. The young human was busy, busy preparing. He stood before his dresser mirror, looking himself over. The image of an 18 year old human male stared back at him, his steel green eyes watching through silver framed glasses. His red hair was just visible under his black fedora. He wore a dark green light weight hoodie, jeans and a pair of hiking boots. Not sure what kind of clothes one wears for what he was about to do, Alex let his appearance go as he turned from the mirror.
On his bed rested a large hiking pack. It was packed full of everything Alex could think of for long trips. Non-perishable food, a healthy supply of water, survival knife, a folding wood cutter’s axe, bug spray, several pairs of clean clothes, matches, and tooth care items. He was as ready to go as was possible. He grabbed the pack and a large red book off his night stand before heading down stairs.
Alex entered the living room to find another man in green robes and a blank white mask. He showed no fear as the man turned to him, a stiffness to his movements that Alex didn’t miss. He looked the man dead in the eyes.
“You understand the risks?” The man in green asked as he moved to Alex, a red jewel in his hands. “This is a one way trip. If you do this, you’re on your own. There is nothing we can do to help.”
“Yes. I get it.” Alex rolled his eyes. “Look, I’ve thought about this for nearly a year. This is the only way we can see what’s out there.”
He held up the book. “We need to know more about this thing. And going to its home is the only way we can do that. I volunteered, remember? Don’t worry so much.”
The man simply nodded, staying silent as he handed the jewel over to Alex. Alex noticed the man’s hand tremble as they touched. He was worried and Alex couldn’t really blame him. The thing Alex was about to do, the task that required a year’s worth of prep and inspired the fear in this man, Alex’s closest friend, was to travel to another world.
Alex was about to make the trip through a magic portal to a new world. Was it dangerous? Could he survive? What lived there? He had none of these answers and the only way to find out was to just go and see what happens. He took a few minutes to compose himself. He wasn’t afraid, only nervous.
He looked at the man who watched from across the room, a camera in his hands to record the event. Alex smiled. He was ready. Why wait?
“Here we go. See you around, Dave.”
Without giving Dave time to respond, he acted. With a quick snap of his wrist, the jewel hit the floor at his feet. It shattered and the spell was cast.
A neon blue magic circle appeared at under him. The dark room lit up with a thousand colors and an eerie wind seemed to awaken in the house. Alex watched with excitement as the colored lights began spinning around him. A dull whistling sound could be heard as the wind picked up. Alex felt energy and warmth all around him. The building shook as the spell reached its zenith.
Then, as the wind was almost deafening, and the lights blinding, Alex felt the floor beneath his feet vanish and he fell through into the abyss. The wind and lights continued for a time until everything suddenly stopped, and all was dark…
Alex jumped awake. He hadn’t even realized he’d fallen asleep. It was a strange scene that met him. He was lying in purple grass and the sky over head was completely white. As he tried to make sense of this, a sound caught his attention. It sounded like someone gasping and it seemed come from behind him. He sat up and turned to see the source…And his jaw dropped.
Just behind him was a pair of gigantic purple eyes staring right at him. He slowly looked down. The ‘grass’ he was sitting on was fur. The fur on the giant creature’s muzzle. Above him was the creature’s forehead on which was a giant purple unicorn horn. Just above that was the creature’s mane, dark purple with a pink highlight running down the bangs.
Alex realized two things. He was sitting on the muzzle of a giant pony. And that pony was Twilight Sparkle and she was looking right at him…
Neither Twilight nor Alex could believe the strange new reality that was before them. They just stared at each other for several seconds as their brains tried to catch up with what their eyes were seeing. A tiny human and a giant pony, each was impossible to the other, and yet here they were.
Alex’s eyes wandered from Twilight’s to the area around him. From his position on Twilight’s nose, Alex was able to see they were in a hallway of some kind. White marble covered the walls and floor while golden buttresses hung from the ceiling. The walls had various things from oil paintings of regal ponies to tapestries and banners of a golden sun. Alex recognized it at once as one of the hallways of Canterlot Castle, the home of Princess Celestia.
So, they weren’t inside Twilight’s castle. Alex looked back at Twilight and tried to take in as much of her as he could. Instantly he noticed the lack of big purple wings on her sides. She wasn’t a princess yet. This meant he was somewhere in MLP’s past. But when? And more importantly, how? How was he sitting on the nose of a fictional character? What did it mean?
“Um, excuse me?” He was pulled from his surge of questions by Twilight’s soft voice. “Are you…a human?”
Alex nodded, their eyes locked on each other once again. He watched as a mad gleam of excitement grew in Twilight’s eyes, her nose quivering a little as she broke out in a smile. Alex was suddenly lifted into the air a sparkling purple aura surrounded him, pulling him a little farther away from Twilight so she could get a better look. He began turning in different directions as Twilight examined him.
“Let’s see. A small patch of hair on the head, bipedal, no hooves but hands and fingers. Full body clothes and an overall appearance similar to apes. Oh you are a wonderful find.”
“Thank you?” Alex said a little unsure of what was going on. “Um, where am I?”
However, Twilight seemed to ignore him. “Oh my gosh. I have to take you to the Princess. She’ll definitely want to see you. Let’s go!”
Without another word, Twilight began running off in what Alex figured was the throne room…
