I know I saw you just earlier today, but I felt like I needed to let you know. I'm so grateful that you let me stay here with my friends, me and Spike are already very happy! I honestly and truly cant express the joy in my heart now that I get to stay in Ponyville. Spike also found a couple reasons to stay here too!

Today I learned that it's hard to accept when somepony you like wants to spend time with somepony who's not so nice. Though it's impossible to control who your friends hang out with, it is possible to control your own behavior. Just continue to be a good friend. In the end, the difference between a false friend and one who is true will surely come to light.

Celestia flipped ahead in her book, looking through more entries as a tear of pure nostalgia rolled down her cheek and to the wet grass below her.

I'm ecstatic to report that Big Mac and Cheerilee are getting married! Today we all learned that true love is something that can only be shared by two ponies that were fated for each other, and trying to love anyone else until then is a waste of your time, AND your heart. I really can't wait to see them together!

Today everypony learned that working together and sharing what you have is one of the most important things about being best friends. After a large shipment of apples were stolen from Sweet Apple Acres, we all worked together to track down the thief and get back our apples! Fluttershy didn't punish Angel for taking the apples, she just forgot to feed her and Angel got hungry! You know how that bunny is!

Today was a special day, and I learned a special lesson. You can't trust everyone. I was nearly at Pinkie's throat today after a couple little birds told me that she didn't want to be my friend anymore. I should have known better than to trust Snips and Snail's, and I should have been even smarter and never doubted my friendship with Pinkie Pie.

Today I learned that when you follow your dreams and never stop to look back on your mistakes, you can truly go anywhere. Rainbow Dash tried out for the Wonderbolts, and MADE IT! However, I'm sure you already knew because she HAS been the talk of Equestria! I'm so happy for her!

Princess Celestia flipped ahead again with her magic, going through page after page of friendship report, skimming each one.
-seeing eye to eye-

She smiled at the last one, giving off a small grin before her eyes watered again. Twilight was so happy that day.
Celestia continued to skim for a few moment's more before she came across a darker entry from her student.

Today, Rarity left us.
I don't know what happened. One minute she was gathering gems just like the rest of us and another, she was buried. Me and the group are taking this very hard. We loved rarity so much. We still do, even if she isn't here now. I just, don't know what I'm going to do. We've lost one of our closest friends and I don't think any of us know how to cope.
Spike's taking it very hard. I haven't seem him for days. I don't know where he is.
I don't know what to do Princess.

Celestia had comforted her for days after that, even helping to find the horribly depressed Spike curled into a sobbing ball somewhere in the library basement. They had all recovered, but nothing was the same after that day.
Dearest Celestia,
We're growing up, and it's really hard to say goodbye again. Even if she's just moving towns. Applejack was given an offer she couldn't refuse. The Apple family in the orchards out side of Las Pegasus had come across some rough times during the winter, and they had practically begged Applejack to come help them rebuild and turn their orchards into the bustling business Sweet Apple Acres has become. Being faithful and dependable, she couldn't say no.
And now. We're down to four. I know we have each other, but we always have the table set for six, and it's getting lonelier and lonelier here.
I'm sorry I haven't been reporting much on friendship lately. I guess I just miss the friendships I used to have too much.

Today was amazing! Me, Pinkie, Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash all had an amazing time camping! I brought my camping book and we followed it down to the letter! It reminded me of the awesome night that I had with Rarity and Applejack... but it made me happy, because it was like things were back to normal again, and it felt like old times.

Dear Princess,
Applebloom is getting so old these days. She spends her time taking good acre of Sweet Apple Acres, and she must nearly be taller than me by now! It's good to see some life bursting in this old town. She must be so happy that Applejack is coming home to live with us.
But, Rainbow Dash is getting worse. Her wings are frail, and her joints creak whenever she walks. It seems that years and years of overuse and stress have worn out her body, and it's sad to see her like this, walking everywhere.
She did open up to me today though, telling me that even though she would never soar through the sky again, she was somehow enjoying a slower pace. She sees the details now, instead of just witnessing a blur as she flew by. I think it's healthy for all three of us to slow down. I'm just happy that Pinkie never slowed down before she passed on, I would have hated to see her anything but happy in her last moments. I guess the lesson today would be that sometimes you need to slow down and smell the flowers once and a while. Enjoy what you have left and what friends you still have.

It's just me now. Me and my Spike.
I'm not sure what to feel Celestia. I'm sad that all of my closest friends are gone, that they each had their moments and moved on, but at the same time I'm happy that they have each other now. We're almost all together now. I know that I really don't have anything left to report on friendship because all of my elements are gone, but I want to keep writing to you because frankly I don't have anything left to hold onto. Spike feeds me each day and tucks me in. You should see how big he's getting, he's so mature and serious, but after you tickle him for a while the old Spike comes out and plays. It's quite funny actually. You should drop by sometime to see me. I miss you.

Celestia stomped her hoof to the grass in anger, clenching her teeth and closing her eyes. She should have seen it. The signs. She had seen her condition, the way she talked about her lost friends more and more each day.
Celestia,
I don't know where to begin. All of my friends have passed on. I'm the only one left, and I don't think I can go on like this anymore. I'm waiting. I'm waiting for my time to go and meet them. I look forward to nothing in this life but exhaling my last breath. I'm not sad, or depressed, just anxious to run and play with my friends again. It's so lonely here.
I just wanted you to know that I love you. Your guidance and mentoring has been a driving force throughout my entire life and without you, I don't know where I would be. You have always been the wiser, teaching me lessons and steering my through this path of life. For these things I truly can't say thank you enough. I will never forget you, and I hope you never forget me.
I'm going to a better place. I know you know that.

The tears flowed freely from Celestia's eyes now, her teeth clenched, but her lips trembling in an almost pouty way as her face contorted in sadness and anger. One question ran through her mind in a naive gesture of insane but hopeless curiosity.
Why.
The word repeated in her head, again and again as she sobbed, trying to suck in air through tear-wet lips. Her body heaved with pain and sadness as she looked at the last page of the book she had sewn together.
Her last letter to Twilight. Just a little too late. She looked it over one last time.
My Dearest Twilight.
You've been the greatest pupil I've ever had, and you devotion and dedication to me has always been your most stunning quality, second only to your beauty. Don't tell your friend Rarity, but I've never seen a more stunning pony in all of Equestria. Your mind was the sharpest I had ever taught, and that's a compliment because I've taught many great minds, including your idol, Starswirl the bearded.
I miss you more than ever now, and just now am I truly realizing how much time I had wasted being your mentor, and how much time I could have been spending being your friend. As I heard each one of your friends pass away, I visited often, trying to console you and kindle your spirit back to what it was meant to be. But as I tried my hardest, it became all too apparent that you could never be the old Twilight. Each one of your friends meant something to you in a way more than the elements of harmony could explain. You were all meant to be together, and as you each faded away, you lost pieces of yourself in the process.
(Celestia read on with clouded eyes now.)
I'm so sorry for what I failed to do. I assumed you were fine when you clearly weren't. I thought that your end would come as peacefully as I had imagined it. I didn't know you felt this way. I didn't know that you were so lonely. I didn't know you were so close to the edge.
When I walked in and saw your body on the ground, that vial laying broken next to you, something inside of me broke, just like so many shards of glass. You were so much more than just a student to me. You we're like a daughter. The child I could never have. I'm sad that you're gone, but I'm happy, because the elements are together again, and that you're happy. That's all I ever wanted.
I watched you grow and learn and mature, but I never thought it would end like this. I'm so sorry Twilight.
So I made this for you. A chronicle of our letters between us two. An archive of our sweetest memories and our fondest moments, even if enjoyed from so far away. You dedicated yourself to me with letters and reports, and I feel that in return, the best way I can honor you is with the same papers that we sent back and forth so long ago.

Celestia was immortal. She would never die from natural causes. It was both her curse and her blessing. She watched over Equestria as it grew, protecting and guiding it's inhabitants, and with that she felt good, like a shepard over her flock. But as several millennium passed, she watched generation after generation of her beloved friends fall away from her like leaves from a tree.
Celestia had tried to keep people close to her, but every single time this happened, they would pass away, leaving Celestia alone and broken once more. It got tiring after a while. Steeling herself over the years, it got easier, even if it was lonely.
But then that changed. Celestia found Twilight.
As Celestia set the book down on the small marble gravestone, she felt the air move behind her as large wing beats brought a familiar friend, and a small leafy windstorm.
"Hello Spike." Celestia said without turning, tears still spilling down her face.
A shadow rested over her, barely perceptible in the cloudy overcast day of the Equestrian fall.
"Hello Princess." A deep voice softly cooed from behind her. Celestia could not detect one hint of the small Spike she used to know in the deep rumbling voice.
She felt a claw and wing wrap around her right side as the larger adolescent dragon approached her from the left. She gave him a brief glance, still worried that her tears would make her look weak. Spike had grown.
He towered over her, nearly twice as tall as her already large Alicorn form. The spines on his back had extended and his face was lengthened, making him look much more dragon-like than before. Despite his scales hardening and his claws growing, the underside of his wing felt warm to Celestia, like a finely tanned smooth leather.
Her tears continued to leak from her eyes, wisping off to the ground lightly as the buildup became to much. She began to shudder again and as she set her book down softly on Twilight's grave.
"You knew." She sobbed out through loose lips and a pained expression, "Didn't you Spike?"
Her bloodshot and tear-wet eyes looked up at him as he turned his neck away, avoiding those royal lie-spotters.
"Yes." Spike started in his deep voice, but instead of making excuses, he just stood there, waiting for Celestia's next words.
Celestia felt her body stiffen in anger at what the large dragon had just said.
How dare he! How dare he let something like this happen!
However, her anger faded away into the back of her heart as she considered how Twilight had felt.
"As much as I wanted her to stay," Spike said as he clutched her reassuringly, "I wanted her to be happy, and there was only one way she could do that. I tried for years to help her..."
Spike looked down at Celestia, who was staring deadly at the gravestone.
"To-" She choked on her own tears, "To be with her friends."
She broke down again, long pained cries of sorrow and grief exploded from her chest as Spike knelt down to her level and wrapped his neck over her back consolingly.
"I'm sorry Celestia."
She continued to press herself against his warm body, desperate for someone to comfort her. As she cried, grieving the loss of her closest friend, she realized that Spike was experiencing this in a much worse way. He had lost 6 of his closest friends while he was forced to outlive them, unable to die when they did.
She realized that they may not be so different after all.
But Celestia never really got over these things, even if she should be used to them by now.
Her heart still ached like it was being trampled by buffalo, but she managed to compose herself as Spike stood up and retracted his wings. Taking a few steps back, he reached out a craw to her as she turned around.
"We still have each other." He offered, his deep voice nearly breaking and revealing his emotions lying so-near underneath those hard purple scales.
As Celestia took one more look behind her, one more look at the cold marble headstone, she began to walk off with Spike, his wing draped over her haunches in a comforting way. Although she was much older than Spike, they both shared a common loss here, a common enemy. Time. Eventually he would grow old and die too...
"You know," Spike started, his deep voice reinstated over his fleshy emotional center, "Twilight said a very wise thing one day. Wiser than normal I mean."
Celestia gave him an inquisitive look, tears still in her red eyes as Spike continued on.
"From now on, I'm gonna solve problems as they come, and stop worrying about every little thing!" Spike walked along with the Princess in silence for a few moments, "I think she was on to something."
Celestia's tears dribbled down her face again.
"I think we should just enjoy each others company, and not think about the future." Spike finally said, clearing up what he had been trying to say.
Celestia nuzzled up against his large form, enjoying the contact.
"Come Spike," She said with a very small smile on her face, "we have the present to enjoy."
Just as Celestia had her greatest friend in all the world, Spike had lost six, and even though they had never really had a personal relationship before, they felt as if they could start now, taking comfort within each others loss.
