An Unexpected Breakfast: Evelyn's POV

I stared down at my food and pushed it around with my fork.

"Eat your breakfast, Evelyn." Mother said, pushing the food closer to me.

I looked up and replied, "I'm not hungry. " Moments of silence later, I looked back down at my food and continued to push around my blueberries on my pancakes, refusing to eat.

"What's wrong? Did something happen at school yesterday?"

I looked up a second time and replied with a sad sigh and said, " Filly Fire hates me now. He was hot. And hot-headed."

"Now, now, what caused it?"

" At lunch, Foolgold spilled a soft drink on his new jacket and blamed it on me because I was next to Fire in the lunch line, but so was she. And then, he got angry at me and 'spilled' my milk all over me. Everyone was laughing. Everyone..."I started crying my eyes out and ran up to Mother to give her a squeeze.

"There, there. You still have friends don't you?"

I thought for a moment and said, "Sugar Grape is my friend. She's always been my friend, ever since magic kindergarten. You remember her, don't you, Mom?"

"Yes, she was a mischievous one, but a good friend nonetheless. Very hyper, too."

I smiled at her and she smiled back. Grape was a good friend, wasn't she?

Suddenly, I spotted a black fog creaking through the cracks of our front door.

"What's going on?" Lamb Ear woke up, groaning.

"Morning, Lambie!" I yelled back.

"I told you I don't like being called that!" Lambie was always cute when she got mad. I giggled. My morning was getting better until the door burst open of the black mist. It knocked the table over. Mother let go of me. The mist wrapped itself around her. Mother's face became blue. Mother wasn't fighting back, but she was gasping for air.

"Go, before it gets to you!" Mother cried, quickly losing breath and gasping for more air. Tears ran down her face.

I picked Lamb Ear up and galloped through the door. We never saw Mother again. My last thought was, I love you, Mom.
