Prologue: His Little Twily
“Twily, my little Twily…”
Shining Armor gazed upon his sleeping baby sister with complete admiration. She was in her crib, wrapped snug in a deep purple blanket with little white stars scattered randomly on it. He remembered when his parents first told him that they were going to have another foal. They both thought that he would be excited to have a little brother or sister to play with, but Shining Armor's response was the complete opposite. He was not excited. At all.
Shining Armor was the only foal in his parents’ lives, he didn't want another colt - or even worse, a FILLY - taking his place. He protested this to his parents, he made it clear that he wanted to be an only child. He threw fits, cried, and yelled at them for wanting to replace him, despite the numerous sit downs and lectures both mom and dad had given him about the fact that he was NOT being replaced. At one point, he even threatened to move out and live the rest of his life with somepony else. Of course, his parents prevented that action, and finally told him that they were having another foal, whether Shining Armor liked it or not.
11 months had passed quickly. Shining Armor spent almost everyday with either his mom, dad, or both of them together, cherishing every moment he had as an only child before it came. Finally, the day he had dreaded arrived. Today, Shining Armor was going to become a big brother, and the new colt or filly would burden his life forever, or so he thought.
When his mother went into labor, Shining Armor was scared. He saw a scene no colt or filly should have to witness until they were full grown mares and stallions starting families of their own. While waiting for the hospital carriage to arrive, Shining Armor’s foalsitter, an old friendly mare by the name of Flower Petal, stopped by to pick him up. Shining Armor knew he was too old for a foalsitter, but she was about to retire, and he loved her so. He was the last colt she would ever foalsit for.
After waiting for what seemed like an eternity, Shining Armor’s father came to pick him up. Of course, Shining Armor didn’t want to see whatever was about to ruin his life forever. He clung on to Flower Petal’s forlegs, begging to stay with her until the new foal was old enough to leave the house.
After a short talk with his beloved Flower Petal, Shining Armor followed his father to the hospital, head hanging low with a grumpy look on his face. He never looked up on the way there, or even though the halls of the hospital. It wasn't until they reached the room that held his mother and the new foal. What he saw would change his life forever.
Of course, his mother was there, smiling warmly at him. But his focus wasn’t on his mother. His attention was on the little purple ball being held in her arms. Shining Armor slowly began to make his way to the hospital bed, his father following behind. When he reached his mother’s side, he got onto his back legs and stretched upwards until his little forlegs were on the edge of the bed, trying to get a closer look at what his mother was holding. Seeing this, his father lifted him up onto the bed. Shining Armor sat next to his mother, eyes still glued to the
little foal.
“Meet your new sister, Shining Armor,” His mother said softly.
“Sister?” Shining Armor asked, looking at his mother, then back at the foal.
“She’s beautiful, isn’t she?”
All he could do was nod his head, not taking his eyes off of his sister.
“Her name is Twilight Sparkle. Do you want to hold her?”
Again, all he did was nod, and this time, he held his hoofs out. When Twilight was placed into his little arms, he shed a single tear. He had never seen anything so beautiful in his life. He was a big brother, an actual big brother! At that moment, he began thinking of all the ways he could protect her from all the dangers that lie ahead. He faced bullies at school, disappointment from school teachers, even teasing from other relatives. With his sister, HIS SISTER, in his hoofs, he vowed that nothing will ever hurt Twilight Sparkle.
His little Twily.
