The Descent

The pink-maned mare was walking down the pathway, on her way to ponyville to buy more carrots for Angel. Fluttershy hummed a sweet tune to herself, the small smile that everypony loves upon her face. “I’ve got so many wonderful choices for you to decide-” she hummed, stopping mid-sentence, for an object that the sun glinted off of had caught her eye.

Curious, the mare deterred from the dirt path and into the brush, examining the foreign object. It had an opaque silver blade, carved with intricate swirls, wind-like streams of air that seemed to be brushed on the metal. The handle was a coffee brown, carved with a different set of swirls, looking like rushing water. Fluttershy thought it was beautiful, yet she did not know what the object was.

“Pretty~” she murmured, eyes full of interest. She picked the knife up and ran her hoof across it, unaware that she can get hurt. Fluttershy felt a sting of pain, her eyes tearing up, suddenly dropping the knife, nursing the small cut on her hoof. “I-I didn’t know something pretty would hurt me…” she said, her voice getting a bit higher, upset and confused.

She carefully picked the knife back up with a different hoof, placing it inside her saddle bag. “Maybe Twilight will know what this is, hopefully”

       A Few Weeks Later...

The shy mare sat alone in her cottage on the edge of the Everfree forest. The shades were drawn, candles blown out, the house having a dark and depressing feeling to it. Some tears rolled out Fluttershy’s eyes, trailing down her face, then hitting the floor, salty pools of water in front of her.

“I-I’ll never be good enough to help make the tornado! I’m just a worthless pegasi!” Fluttershy sobbed to herself. Another failed attempt to reach the minimum flight score, she had tried again, even had her animal friends help train her, but alas, she couldn’t do it.

She’s been depressed for awhile now, and not being able to do this...to fly good, well, it just broke her more. “Why can’t I be good at anything?! I’m a shy, stupid, not good enough baby! I can’t do anything right!” The pegasus pony sobbed harder, wiping her tears away with her hooves. “I’m so pitiful that I can manage to cut myself on a beautiful knife.”

Wiping away the rest of the tears, she stared down at the tiny scar on her hoof, left by the intricate-pattern knife. She smiled sadly, forming an idea in her mind. If I never had wings, I wouldn’t be holding the team back from making the biggest tornado, but how can I get rid of my wings? She thought, sighing a bit at her own misfortune. Her gaze then wandered to the knife on the table, another thought in her head. If it can cut my hoof, what else can it do?

She tilted her head, lost in thought, continuing her thought train. Fluttershy then got an idea. A gruesome, sadistic kind of idea, the kind that makes the innocent cringe when thinking about. Picking up the knife, tantalizingly slow, she held it as her other hoof reached for her partially extended wing, pulling it over to the front. The knife glinted in a small ray of sun that shone through a crack in the curtains. “I can’t believe I’m going through with this.” she whispered.

The knife was brought the the wing, the cold metal making her shudder a bit. Taking her time, she started to move the knife back and forth, cringing at this movement.

She was sawing off her own wings.
