Something To Believe In
By Dad My Names Not Timmy
Prologue
Ulysses stared into the large, jagged expanse that is The Divide. The sun shone through dust clouds, giving the area a sickly red glow across The Divide. His eyes seemed to search for nothing in particular; he just wanted to gaze upon the place he basically called home. He heard footsteps behind him, but didn't bother to turn. He knew well enough who it was.
"Come here to finish the job? Or did you come to talk?" Ulysses asked as his 'guest' sat down beside him.
"No. I want to talk." An accented, feminine voice called from his right. "I want to learn more." She said.
"Never can forgive you. Brought pain, destruction; destroyed the only thing I left the Bull and challenged the Bear for." Ulysses' baritone, almost monotonous voice sliced through the woman's heart, his words striking true. "But, I will enlighten you."
Ulysses turned his head toward the woman to his right. She was beautiful, a 'desert rose' by some. She had flowing black hair, sparkling green eyes and slightly tanned skin. This woman was known as The Courier, or Courier Six by Ulysses. She was wearing the symbol of the Old World, much like Ulysses, with a well-worn Assault Carbine resting on her back.
Ulysses began to talk. He talked, and talked, and talked. He talked until his voice began to hurt. Ulysses told The Courier about himself, his time with the Legion, to the time he found Big MT, all the way to his conclusion, that was solved inadvertently by The Courier. Hours had passed, the sky already dark, with a dimly lit campfire between the couriers. Courier Six took all this information in, from his beginning in The Twisted Hairs tribe, to the destruction of Hopeville and Ashton.
But one thing hung over The Courier's mind: that she was the one that caused it all. This fabled war between couriers had been started when Courier Six unknowingly delivered a nuclear detonator to The Divide. She had tears rimming at her eyes. She stared into the fire, watching the flames dance, the embers rising into the sky and watching it's small pillar of smoke rise high into the air.
"Words are sometimes Man's greatest weapon." Ulysses said cryptically. "I know how you feel."
The Courier was silent.
"I must go." She finally said, making her way to the makeshift door in the back, in once was a bus. Opening the door, she disappeared into the canyon that lead to the Mojave.
"To the Divide they came, - in the Divide they rest." Ulysses said aloud, no one hearing his little quote.
"Who came to rest?" A feminine voice called. Ulysses snapped his head to his left and saw a woman with pale skin, with flowing, star-like hair. She wore a dress, something that was possibly made from the Old World, and it bore the symbol of the moon.
"Who are you?" Ulysses simply said, eyeing the woman with an inquisitive gaze.
"I am Luna, the Mistress of the Night. I heard your tale, Ulysses; and I want to offer you something." The woman, Luna, said to Ulysses. Ulysses raised a brow questioningly. "I can take you somewhere, a place in which you can believe in. A placed not scorched by fire or riddled with death. A copy, somewhat, of the Old World." Ulysses, however was not pleased.
"Who are you to come here with farfetched tales and lies?" Ulysses sneered, but to Luna, it sounded like he was talking normally.
"Take my hand, and you will see the truth." She held out a hand, as she had said, and offered it to Ulysses.
"How do I know this is the truth you speak?"
"Because there is nothing to believe in here, from what you told that girl." Luna countered, gazing intently onto Ulysses. She saw the good inside of him, besides the atrocities he performed. She saw a man, with no one to share his knowledge with, a man without an objective. "Please."
Ulysses contemplated her offer. She didn't look like a wastelander, and wore a dress that didn't even look so much as ripped or scuffed. Her hair, now that he realized, had been blowing in an invisible wind. She indeed looked like she wasn't from here, from this world. Cautiously, he took the woman's hand, and his mind was flooded with images of a place of peace, harmony and love. The world seemed to have been not drowned in nuclear fire and radiation, nothing but a clean, pristine environment. Ulysses released Luna's hand.
"...What was that?" Ulysses asked bewilderedly.
"Something worth believing in." Luna said as Ulysses and Luna were enveloped in a midnight blue bubble, before disappearing into the night.
