Queen Chrysalis looked around her empty hive. Every changeling was gone.
Her daughters, Larva, Papillion, and Pupa. Gone.
Her husband, Sombra. Gone.
Her foster mother, Queen Thorax. Gone.
Even her real mother, Queen Galaxia, had been gone for many thousands of years.
Her two younger sisters, Celestia and Luna, had kicked her out of their kingdom.
Chryssi sighed. Even her Fluffle Puff, her best friend, was gone.
Chryssi had been blasted so far away from all other ponies that she could no longer feed off of their love. Or any love.
She walked out of her old, barren hive to the ginkgo trees that lined the rainforest. It was a forest she knew well. Whenever she was having trouble with her fellow changelings, or her daughters, she would go out to the forest, and stare up at the ginkgos. It was beautiful.
Today, the trees were dripping with leftover rain. And she hated it. There was no possible way she could enjoy it…not when she knew that she had no family or friends to return to.
She lied down on the forest floor, which was blanketed by wet, rotting leaves. She cried.
It was all her fault. SHE was the one who had them all blasted out of Canterlot. SHE was to blame for disabling all the residents of her hive. Sure, she took the place of her niece. But it was because of the fact that changelings fed on love. It caused them to do extremely irrational things when they were hungry.
What a cruel thing life was. Chrysalis told herself she would never go back to her sisters. She told them she would prove that she was a good queen. But she couldn’t help it… her kingdom had been failing.
And it still failed. Even after stumbling upon Equestria, her kingdom still…died.
Everypony else died. Chrysalis was the last changeling who remained. It hurt. Not just in her heart…
But also in her stomach. She was dying of hunger. She knew she was on the last rungs of the ladder of life. If she couldn’t spend her final moments with her loved ones, she wanted to be in her special spot underneath the ginkgos.
She sighed. And, for the first time in her life, she realized something:
If you can’t love, then what’s the point of life?
