Tales of Romance.
The cyan feather
Previous ChapterRainbow knew she was a horrible marefriend, that fact that she was standing on a cloud on the outskirts of Ponyville instead of on her date with Twilight proved that she was a horrible marefriend. Everything had been fine three months ago when she had started dating the librarian, but that was until Twilight had started trying to get closer to her, and closeness was something that scared Rainbow.
“Stupid Rainbow,” the pegasus muttered to herself kicking the cloud she was standing on. Rainbow tried to think of a way to fix this situation, but nothing she could think of would be enough to fix the royally bucked up situation she had created with Twi. But Rarity should be able to help, the unicorn had all kinds of romantic and crazy advice.
With a goal clear in her mind, the pegasus shot off towards Ponyville and landed in front of Rarity’s shop a minute later. She hesitated a moment before knocking on the door. There was the sound of several things crashing, and a unicorn muttering some extremely unladylike words before the door was flung open.
“What is it Rainbow, I’m extremely busy at the moment.”
“Sorry Rares, I-I just need some help with something.”
“Oh, okay, well, I suppose I could spare a few minutes. Why don’t you come on in darling?” Rarity stepped aside holding the door open for the pegasus to step through. “Now then darling, what seems to be the problem?”
Rainbow sighed and sat down on her haunches. “I messed up Rares, I messed up big time, and Twilight’s probably going to break up with me now.”
Rarity blinked at her friend. “Okay, well, can you tell me what you did.”
“It’s more of what I haven’t done.” Rainbow sighed once more and scuffed the floor with her hoof. “Twilight keeps wanting more intimately from me, but...for some reason...”
“You’re scared of commitment, aren’t you darling?”
Rainbow nodded. “But not just the commitment, it’s the intimacy, you know? the snuggling, the staying up late at night talking with each other, communication. I’m just no good at this stuff, and Twi wants that from me. I don’t know what to do.”
Rarity pursed her lips, and tapped her chin thoughtfully. “Well darling, there’s really only two options I can really think of to fix this situation. One, you break up with Twi and save yourself future heartache, or two, you face your fears and tell Twilight what you’ve just told me. At least that way you both can work on a way to fix this together.”
Rainbow shook her head. “I can’t loose my marefriend Rarity, but I’m afraid of opening myself up to her at the same time...”
“Then say that to her darling. At least that way she knows you have fears of intimacy, and she won’t be thinking you’re not interested in her.”
Rainbow’s eyes widened and she suddenly knew what she had to do. “Rarity, you’re a genius!” Rainbow shot out the door and flew towards the restaurant where Twilight was waiting for her.
---------------
Twilight sighed dejectedly as she pulled the last petal off the bouquet of flowers and watched it drift slowly down, just as her heart was. She had been waiting for half an hour for the pegasus to show up, but past experiences and statistics should have told her Rainbow wasn’t going to be there for their date. Twilight stood and was about to leave, when a multicolored blur shot through the air and landed in front of her.
“Twi, wait, I’m here!” Rainbow panted. “Please let me explain.” Twilight was tempted to just leave Rainbow like the pegasus had left her but decided to give her marefriend one more chance, for the sake of their relationship. “I know I’ve been a terrible marefriend, and I know you deserve better than me, it’s just...” Rainbow’s throat suddenly felt very dry, and she felt as though the entire restaurant was staring at her. “It’s just...I’m afraid.”
Twilight was about to say something but Rainbow held up a hoof to stop her. “Please don’t interrupt, this is really hard for me.” Twilight nodded, and gestured for Rainbow to continue. “I really want to be with you Twi, you’re an amazing friend, and an even more amazing marefriend. It’s just, I find it really hard to open myself up to you... I-I can’t do this.” Rainbow muttered turning to walk away.
Twilight started to walk after the pegasus, but Rainbow came to sudden stop, and turned around with a determined look in her eyes. “Twi I’m just going to come out and say it. I’m scared of commitment. But I’m more scared of losing you. You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me and I don’t want that to end.”
Rainbow extended a wing, and Twilight’s eyes widened. “Rainbow What are you?...” With a loud whimper, and a visible wince, Rainbow tugged on one of her main flight feathers and pulled it free from her her wing, before placing it on the table in front of Twilight.
“Twilight. Will you be my special somepony?”
