A Smelly Smell that Smells Smelly
Waking up was the hardest part of the day for Emerald Gleam, but nevertheless he still woke up. The snores of his housemates echoed loudly through the halls of the house. Emerald made a no attempt in being quiet and jumped out of bed, prompting a loud thump to echo through the house.
"Uh, really Emerald? Its only four..." One of Emerald's housemates groaned. "I get that you have to be up early, but that's no reason to wake me up."
Emerald ignored the complaints of his housemate and head straight to the restroom, just before he reached the rest room a sky blue aura lit the door up and it slammed shut. "Really Sky?" Emerald complained as he rubbed his muzzle. "You know how long it takes me to do my hair."
"Exactly." A sky blue unicorn with icy colored hair emerged from one of the rooms. "You take too long, you might as well go last."
"But I have a job!" Emerald protested. "You forget who pays the rent on this place and puts food on the table!"
"Go make me a hot drink and I will let you do your stupid hair..." Sky sighed and rolled his eyes. "I don't see why you put so much effort into it, it just gets messed up when you clear the skies."
"No, get off your lazy flank and do it yourself." Emerald barked back. "I'm not your servant."
"Really? You two are at it this early in the morning!?" A female voice shouted out. A third door in the hallway swung open and another unicorn emerged, this unicorn had significant bed mane. "Don't say a word."
"O-Okay..." Emerald said snickering as he struggled to stop himself from bursting out laughing.
"To be fair... It speaks for itself." Sky said evilly. Sky's comment caused Emerald to break into a hysterical laughter. Ocean glared at Sky coldly.
"Right for that Sky, you lose restroom privileges." The mare remarked bitterly as her horn lit up and threw the restroom open. Emerald was quick to dive into the restroom and slam the door shut.
"Really Ocean? You took his corner!?" Sky snarled.
Ocean sighed to herself and headed downstairs. "Maybe if you had kept those floppy gums of your shut I wouldn't of." Ocean chuckled. "And besides, he shouldn't be too long, I took his manestream style magazines out. He should notice in three... Two... One..."
"WHO TOUCHED MY MAGAZINES!?" Emerald shouted from the rest room, the doorknob to the room slowly started to turn and the door started to open.
"You leave the room you forfeit your time in there." Sky slyly said. The door to the restroom slammed shut and locked. Sky could hear Ocean laughing form downstairs. Sky smirked to himself and returned to his room, research notes on various subjects were scattered around the room the unicorn picked up a small book and took it with him downstairs.
After what seemed like an eternity in the restroom, Emerald emerged with his mane stylized. The pegasus made his way downstairs, cut through the main room where Ocean and Sky were sat and dived straight into the kitchen. "Hey I'm making hot drinks, either of you interested?" Emerald called out from the kitchen.
"Sure, I'm game for a mocha." Sky replied.
"I take two spoons of sugar in my tea Emerald, don't mess up like last time!" Ocean called out. "If you mess it up again you will be wearing it again!"
Emerald smugly made his way to the cupboard containing the mugs and cups for the house, knowing that his housemates would owe him a favor that he could cash in. However upon opening the cupboard he was greeted with a most unsavory smell.
"Eugh!" Emerald wretched and jumped back, crashing into the counter and knocking several plates over. Luckily several different shades of blue caught them as Sky and Ocean came in. Emerald continued flying backwards until he found himself pinned against the window.
"What's the... YUCK!" Ocean shouted as she smelt the smell that was coming from the cupboard. "What in Celestia is that!?" Ocean slammed the cupboard door shut. Emerald landed next to the two unicorns and rubbed his neck.
"Did something die in there? It smells horrible!" The pegasus remarked crudely. "Maybe there is some dry rot..?"
"No, that smell was... Even the foulest of magics could not make a smell that bad." Sky responded. "Maybe you should check the cups." The sky blue unicorn suggested.
"Urgh... You two can do that, I feel sick." Emerald dashed behind Sky and feigned falling over. "I don't even have the energy to stand up, it sapped by strength!"
"Bah, are you two done acting like school fillies?" Ocean taunted as she approached the cupboard. "If you two don't have the courage to do it, I will." Ocean slowly pulled the cupboard open with her magic, however her slow movements did nothing to stop the foul smell sweeping across the kitchen. "Yuck." Was the only work Ocean could find as she began to remove the cups from the cupboard.
While Ocean worked to remove the cups Emerald had miraculously gotten his energy back and was darting around the kitchen and main room, opening the doors and windows so that the smell could escape the confides of the house. However this offered no help in removing the smell.
Sky went about checking the cups that Ocean was bringing down and checked them for any mold. "Urgh, even the cups stink." Sky remarked with a long sigh as he regretted his role. "Hey Emerald can you open some more windows? The smell isn't leaving."
"I'm trying!" Emerald shouted as he flew upstairs and opened more windows, the speed the pegasus was flying at was surprisingly fast considering the tight space he was in. "It doesn't seem to be going! I can smell it up here now!"
"Well that's it. I'm complaining to the landlord." Ocean flatly said as she finished taking down all the cups. "How can anypony be expected to live in this stench? It smells like a fish came out of water, climbed into our cupboard and died!"
"I agree." Sky said, nodding compliantly. "There isn't any good cause for it either... It just stinks." Emerald came speeding down the stairs and crashed into the counter a second time.
"I opened all the windows, but all it seems to have done is made the whole house smell." Emerald flew up to the cupboard and inspected it. "Why does it smell so bad..."
Ocean chuckled to herself as mused for a moment. "It smells like a fish climbed out of the foul smelling lake, flopped through a junk yard, flopped into our cabinet, released it the contents of it stomach and then died."
Meanwhile, next door...
"Are you sure this is the best way to go about it?"
"I have had it up to here with their stupid arguments about hair at four in the morning!"
"But what if they figure out your the one causing the smell?"
"Ha? Those three? Its a miracle the pegasus is able to support the other two on his wages."
"But surely you could just ask them to stop arguing..."
"But wheres the fun in that?"
