The Epic Struggle of Indecision (featuring books)
Twilight looked around the library. It had been awhile since she had been here. Rows of books reaching towards the sky, so high she couldn't see the tops of the shelves. The air was thick with the smell of dust and paper, both new and old. It was the smell of books, and to her, it was the first sign that today was going to be a good day. She let out a huge sigh of contentment. She had the whole day ahead of her. No distractions, or assignments to complete, nothing. Just simple, wonderful reading. Here, she could go anywhere she wanted to. Nothing was out of reach. If some one wrote it, she could live it. There was just one small problem. Actually it was a huge one. She had no idea what to read. She stood, frozen in the door of the Canterlot library, unsure of where to go, it was as though every single book was calling out to her, suggesting different genres, titles and authors. The most epic struggle of indecision imaginable.
"Um.... Twilight?" A soft voice jerked Twilight out of her thoughts. She jumped and spun around, to see Fluttershy, who was standing behind her, nervously pawing the ground with one hoof. "Aren't we going in? But, I mean, only if you want to of course... oh no... Were you thinking of something important? Did I just interrupt a really big decision that you-"
" No, it's fine" Twilight cut in. "You're right, we probably should go in." Together, the two friends stepped over the large doormat, and entered the library. Fluttershy immediately headed towards the biology section.
She and Twilight were in Canterlot for a visit with Twilights parents. Twilight had originally intended to go by herself, but the rest of the gang had insisted on coming to keep her company, and today, they had had a bit of a disagreement over what to do. Rarity had wanted to go shopping, Pinkie Pie had wanted to look at party supplies, Rainbow Dash had wanted to nap, which Spike had wholeheartedly supported, and Applejack just wasn't sure what to do. Eventually, they had decided to split up for the morning, meet up for lunch, and decide how to spend the afternoon, before catching the evening train back to Ponyville. So Rarity had headed to the mall with Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash and Spike had stayed at Twilights parents house and Twilight and Fluttershy had gone to the library with Applejack. At least, that had been the plan. While they were eating breakfast, Applejack had seen a couple of distant cousins who were in Canterlot for the weekend. She had gone with them to catch up on goings on in Appaloosa, and would be spending the morning with them, as they were going back around noon.
That was how Twilight came to be standing in the middle of a library, trying to decide what to read. She knew every book here. There wasn't much new material. She looked around at the different sections, all carefully organised according to author, genre and length. She had helped alot with the organization of every new book that passed through here before she moved to Ponyville, so the only books she didn't know, were the newer ones. She looked over at the "New Arrivals" section. about five books rested on the shelves, all foals story books.
'well if I can't find anything to read that's new, I might as well look at some of the older books' She thought to herself. 'At least there's always something good there.'
A couple minutes later, Twilight found herself re shelving the whole section on ancient magic. She hadn't really meant to, but It didn't take very long, as every book had already been well organized before she came along. As she slid ' Secrets of common magic' back into the last shelf, something caught her eye. Resting on the floor next to her, was a book she was sure hadn't been there before. It was old, far older than any book she had ever seen before. It wasn't really a book, more of a note book really, and there was no title.
Gingerly, Twilight lifted the book in her magic, her horn glowing purple as she did, half expecting it to crumble to dust the second she touched it. But the book remained in one piece, and Twilight opened it to the first page. Scribbled on the first page, in writing almost identical to her own, was the following message:
" You're going to need this. Don't tell the Princesses, just your friends. Read on."
