Intro One: Dayy Onyx
You should kill them, Dayy.
I don't see exactly where the logic comes in there.
Logic is a waste of your energy. You are driven by instinct.
No. That's you.
Exactly. We are one. You are me, and I am you.
This... I guess you could call it an argument... had been going on for hours. Years, actually. Still, the words were always the same. Practically habitual repetition by now. Dayy adjusted her black masquerade style mask and pushed the voice to the darkest recesses of her mind, drowning out the constant chatter. She looked about herself, amazed that some of these people were actually given weapons and allowed entrance to Beacon, which was the airship's current destination. Whoever had made that decision must be missing more than just a few brain cells.
Dayy's eyes were drawn to one student in paricular. Probably bacause the girl was, instead of gawking at the view like the rest, staring very obviously at her, head tilted a bit and eyes squinted. There's always someone watching, Dayy thought. The slits in her mask limited her field of vision considerably, and as soon as she turned away, a startlingly loud voice sounded from behind her.
"Heeeyyyyy theeeerrreeeee!" Dayy flinched and whirled to face the voice. It was the same girl. She wore a ridiculous looking grin set below two rust colored orbs. Her hair a bright red and cut about an inch long set off her navy blue skirt and tee and a pair of combat boots of a much lighter shade of blue.
"Uhm... hello," Dayy replied quietly, taking a quick step backward and nearly losing her balance.
"So what's with the mask? You look soooo pale. Trying not to get sunburn? Ya know sun block works just as well. Probably bette--" She stopped suddenly, an odd look on her face. "Oh, sorry. I tend to ramble. My name's Laura Lapis. And yours?" She extended a hand and smiled warmly.
After hesitating for a moment, Dayy shook the outstretched hand. "Dayy Onyx," she replied a little more confidently. Laura's face suddenly lit up with that grin again. It seemed to be her default facial expression. Or maybe she just didn't know that it was so cheerful it was actually a bit frightening.
"Heyyyyy. Lapis. Onyx. They're both minerals! That's so cool!" Wow, this girl was enthusiastic.
Their conversation was interrupted by the hologram of an older woman with platinum blonde hair and piercing green eyes. One overly rehearsed speech later, the image flickered and was gone again. Dayy turned back to Laura, but she was gone. Probably off trying to make some new friends. She seemed the type.
"Long time no see, Scarface," came the startlingly close voice.
Dayy tensed as she felt a tap on her right shoulder. Her hand darted inside her thick leather jacket and she drew Slayer, a shortsword with one serrated edge. Sweeping it up and over her shoulder until the point rested on the boy's throat, she asked in a monotone, "What the hell are you doing here, Herald?"
Dayy turned around, her sword still just touching his exposed throat. The boy - Herald grinned, then raised his right hand and pushed away the blade, emitting a screeching sound. His entire right arm shone with a metallic light. "Well, I heard they had good food he-"
"Cut the act. Last I saw you, you were one arm short of a person," She interrupted, examining the metal arm. "Care to explain?" Dayy retracted the blade of Slayer into its hilt and slid it back into the holster next to Sentinel, the other half of her blade set.
"Well, I guess you could call me a guinea pig. After I lost it, Schnee dust and the Atlas military gave me this," he showed off his new arm, "And sent me off to Beacon two years ahead."
"And you think that's safe?"
"Well look at that! Scarface actually cares for my safety! Who knew you had a heart?" He said far too sincerely to be serious. He pointed up to the stage, his ever present grin unwavering. "Show's starting."
"Like I care what's happening up there," she said in a harsh whisper as a man - presumably the headmaster - began speaking. "You seriously let the military send you to Beacon at fifteen? I knew you were enthusiastic, bu-"
"Scarface," Herald cut in, his face and tone growing serious for a fleeting moment before the grin returned. "I may have missed a few years of training back at Signal, but my time in Atlas more than made up for that. Besides," He tapped her mask with his metal arm and ignored the glare he knew was hidden under it. "I couldn't let you have all the fun."
"Damn it, He-" Dayy was cut off by the same woman from the airship on stage adressing the students after the headmaster's speech.
"You will gather in the ballroom tonight. Tomorrow, your initiation begins. Be ready. You are dismissed."
Dayy scowled and turned back to Herald. "We are NOT finished with this conversation, Herald Blu," she said before merging into the crowd headed for the ballroom.
This was going to be a LOOOONG year for sure.
