A Cold Tale
Chapter 0 - Prologue
Load Full StoryNext ChapterMy stomach pleads for food in the form of a low growl. I place my hoof on my stomach and frown. I haven't eaten in days. I need a new town and fast if I want to stay alive. I continue my trek through the forest I entered days prior, dodging low branches and thorns as i go.
"I've been walking for about 5 hours now...right? No....maybe it was 6.....4? that's not right...Grr! This stupid forest is messing with my head again!" I mumble to myself as i jump a fallen tree. Just as I land back on the ground, a loud growl emanates from behind me causing me to freeze in my tracks.
I slowly turn around, expecting a predator, only to find another pony. We both just stared at each other with baited breaths, waiting for the other to make a move.
Out of nowhere, the pony before, a unicorn with a velvet colored coat and a main that seems to be a very dark blue with a single purple and pink strip running down the side, gasps and steps closer to me. "Oh my gosh! Are you alright?!" She asks.
I take a step back from the unicorn, but offer no reply. The pony freezes before me with a look of shock evident on her face.
"A-are you....scared of me?" She whispers. I, once again, opt to stay silent and take another step back. The unicorn sees this and steps forward. "Do not fear young one. I promise not to hurt you." She says with a maternal tone as she starts walking towards me at a slow, steady pace. I turn and bolt at the motion, swerving left and right, darting under low branches, vaulting over dead trees that have long since fallen, and jumping holes and brush.
The unicorn must be determined because she was right behind me the entire time. "Wait! Please stop running!" She calls. I simply dart right and out from a tree line. Only to come to one of the most dread inducing sights I know.
I'm surrounded by water.
The unicorn jumps from the foliage and glares at me. "Well that was uncalled for! No wonder you look filthy if THAT'S what you do every day!" She nags. I face her and lower my head to the ground and flare my wings in an attempt to make myself look intimidating.
The mare before me seems utterly baffled by this act and slowly banters towards me once more. "Are you trying to scare me off? Why would you wanna do that?!" She mumbles although more to herself rather than anyone specifically
"Do not follow me. Do not look for me. Forget that you ever saw me." I said before turning and bolting once more towards the water of the small lake that surrounds me. I hear the unicorn calling for me to stop, but i ignore her all the same. Just as I get within 5 feet of the water, it turns to ice. I run across the lake as it freezes in front of me and soon reach the other side. I glance back to the unicorn and see her with a completely baffled and shocked expression on her face.
I run into the foliage once more, but stay to the outside so that i can watch the mare. She looks about, but soon lowers her head and walks away. I follow her from a distance, but don't let her know I am there. After a good 20-30 minute walk, we arrive at a path. The path leads out of the foliage and into what seems to be a small town. As I walk, I notice a small junk yard to my right about 30 meters from the tree line of the forest and mentally decide to stay there for the night.
The unicorn glances back to the forest as she leaves, but doesn't stop. Once she is out of sight, I gallop to the junk yard and start looking for a decent place to sleep tonight. This is the first night in my new home, so I'd best make it good.
~~~~~Twilight's Perspective~~~~~
I walk back down the roads of the familiar town I call home while pondering what I saw in the forest. "Who was that pony?" I thought to myself. "Could he have been lost? Maybe I should have looked for him! But he did say he didn't want to be found. Maybe I should talk to the girls? But wait, he also said to just forget him...Grr! Stupid ominous mystery colt!" I thought.
I walked into the Golden Oaks Library, the place I call home, and spot my brother-like assistant Spike placing books on the shelves. "Heya twilight! How'd it go?" He asked
"Strange... Spike. I need you to take a letter." I said.
Spike, a baby dragon with purple scales and a green underbelly, hopped to his feet and pulled a quill and parchment from a drawer. "Got it!" he said with a smile.
I cleared my throat before speaking. "Dear Princess Celestia. I am writing to inform you of what happened to me during one of my trips into the Everfree Forest for some herbs I needed for an experiment. I was walking back to town when I spotted a young Pegasus colt with a grey-ish white coat and a mane that looked as if it was...well, ethereal. Almost like that of your's and Princess Luna's. Isn't that queer? That's not even the strange part! The strange part is that when I cornered him near a lake, he told me to forget him and to not look for him before running across the lake! It was almost as if the lake it's self was creating a path for him as he ran over the top of the water as it turned to ice before him! I've never seen anything like it before! I don't know if he's a threat or not yet, but I felt I should inform you anyways. Your faithful student, Twilight Sparkle. Ok Spike! You can send it now." I said as i turned to the young drake.
Spike nodded and waddled to a nearby window before blowing a plume of smoke out of it. Spike nodded and closed the window. "Done and done twilight! Anything else you need?" he asked.
"No thank you spike, but I think i'm going to take a nap now. I'm exhausted!" I said as I climbed the stairs to the second floor of the Library which acted as a loft. "You can close up early today spike. Good night." I said with a yawn as I opened the door to my bedroom.
I heard a quick cheer and a "Good night!" after losing sight of the young dragon and couldn't help but roll my eyes. I laid down in bed and covered myself up. All that remained poking out from the covers was my head as I closed my eyes and waited for sleep to take me.
But my mind had another plan. Thoughts and questions of the colt in the forest flashed through my mind like Rainbow Dash when she practices flying. I laid there and pondered the situation for a while before sleep finally took me into it's embrace and i fell into a peaceful slumber. All doubt vanishing as did my consciousness.
