Prologue: A bitter defeat

Another burst of pure, golden sunlight singed several of our shadowy wings. I retaliated locking glowing magical beams, the night pushing against the light, determined to extinguish it... forever if needs be. With a sharp burst of sound the foolish princess was cast from the sky, streaking into a nearby chamber. We flew after in quick pursuit, crashing through a beautifully crafted stain-glass window.
The look she gave us, like nothing Tia had ever made before. She looked at us with such disdain... a force needing to be exterminated, before she expelled us from the sky.An odd tingling rushed through our being, then a mist surrounded us shrouding us in darkness.
Panting, she examined her surrounding, casting a strong luminary spell, illuminating a barren wasteland. She reared up, roaring in anger, slamming her hooves down she made two deep craters. In a vicious fury, she streaked across the gloomy surface casting random spells here and there, slamming herself into boulders and and the pre-existing caverns on the moons surface. Jetting upward she threw herself towards her prison, hurling her hooves into the ground, causing not only a massive hole, but a glistening, icy layer inside it, thick icicles licking at its edges.
Nightmare moon glanced down at herself, then leaned in for a closer look. Something of recognition flickered in her eyes, and she let out a terrified shriek. She thrust her helmet away from her, shaking off the nightmare. The misty veil around the young Princess Luna dissipated, leaving the frightened filly in disbelief.
She shook her head a bit, "No... I...I couldn't. That's not possible! No! NO!! TIA!!"
