This is what I believe happened to Luna during the Canterlot Invasion. This story is kind of based off of Obselescence's story Love, in All Its Forms. Its a great story, so make sure to check it out! Luna still struggles with the loss of Antumbra, her daughter that she had created shortly after the defeat of Nightmare Moon. However, a new enemy threatens to tear her heart into two after making a promise she may not be willing to keep.
