The Elements of Mayhem--Awakeningby ToneCraftChaptersDeceptionBetrayalCrueltySolitudeWrathGreedDeceptionWhere. . . The dark blue earth pony thought to herself, as her vision started to come into focus. Somehow, she knew exactly who she was. Without any prior experiences of the world, she knew. Her name was False Witness. Her purpose: To keep the pony AppleJack away from the other five. . .Of something or other. . .Okay, I don't have perfect knowledge of things, she thought. She stood and looked around, I seem to be in the pantry. This much food. . .Someplace where a lot of ponies would end up. And the types of food. High-strung ponies. As Witness looked around, she saw a full section of the pantry dedicated to ingredients for baking cakes. She picked up a box and looked at the underside, reading it aloud, "For Princess Celestia only. I'm in the Canterlot palace, apparently." The intruder set the box back on the shelf and walked to the door, listening for somepony on the other side. ------ Lance trotted down the hallway, the beam from his horn illuminating his path. The white unicorn fought against his urge to yawn. "Come on, Lance, you're on duty," he scolded himself, before hearing something in the pantry. A pony speaking quietly. "Is somepony in there?" Lance asked, turning the light to the door. The voice of a mare responded, "Yeah. I'm just trying to get out the ingredients for a cake Princess Celestia asked me to bake. You know how she is." Lance had the strange feeling that he could have trusted this mare even if she told him she was Princess Luna's pet Ursa Major. He opened the pantry door and spotted a blue earth pony with a dark silver mane, struggling a bit with some ingredients stacked on top of each other. "Oh, here. Let me help you," the guard said, coming in and taking a portion of the stacked ingredients off of her hooves. "Thank you," Witness said, "You know how it is, right? The Princess craves some cake, so she asks the new pony to bake one." Lance nodded and chuckled, "Always getting the short end of the stick for the first few months, yeah?" The two of them set the ingredients on the counter, quickly getting to baking. "What's your name, by the way," Lance asked. "It's Honey Lemon," Witness responded. Lance nodded a bit, "Pleasure to meet you, Honey Lemon. My name's Lance Charger." The guard resumed his patrol shortly after, with no idea he'd just helped an intruder bake a cake for the Princess. Witness ducked out of the palace, leaving the undecorated cake on the counter as she made her escape. ------ "My name is False Witness," The blue mare said to her own reflection, "I don't know why. I don't know who. But I was created to keep AppleJack, the Element of Honesty, away from the other five Elements of Harmony by my master. And I don't know why, but I need a hat. Badly." BetrayalThe pegasus stood slowly. He looked over himself. He had a turquoise coat, and a quick check of his tail revealed it to be red, yellow, and blue. He took particular note of his cutie mark; A pair of wings, one red, one blue, with a golden trail behind them. He turned back to the front, and immediately found himself facing a poster for some aerial team. The "Wonderbolts." "All they're doing is flashing off an ability they share with a third of the Equestrian population," he said, putting a hoof on the top right corner of the poster, "Khe. Ooh, look at me! I'm a Wonderbolt! I can do the same thing the rest of the pegasi can do, only I do it after weeks of rehearsal!" He tore half the poster off the wall and tossed it aside, turning and walking away. "Why should I care about other ponies? Joining a team would do nothing except hold me back." ------ He took flight, flying straight up until he started to have difficulty breathing the thin air, and turned around. His wings propelled him downwards faster than gravity pulled him. His eyes snapped shut to prevent anything getting in them, and he waited until the last possible moment to make a sharp turn back upwards. He heard the explosion from his turn, and looked back. A red, yellow, and blue circle expanded where he'd made his turn. At that moment, the resulting shockwave hit him. "Oh, shi--" He started before he hit the side of the mountain and everything went black. ------ "Nice flyin', Tex," A mare said as the pegasus started to wake. "Khe. . ." was his only verbal response as he stood, looking over. The first thing he saw was a blue mare wearing a black top hat, "Well, the explosion was pretty, but no amount of concussion can make a top hat look good without the suit." The other mare, a dark grey unicorn shook her head, "I tried to tell her." The red earth pony beside her rolled his eyes, "Still better than a pink cap." "Beside the point, everypony." the first mare said, before turning back to the pegasus, "Got memories from before you woke?" ". . .No," the pegasus responded, "I just know my name is Turn Coat." "And you were created to counter an Element of Harmony, right?" The other stallion asked. "How did--" "So were all three of us," The unicorn said, "We caught sight of the Sonic Rainboom, and initially assumed it was the Element of Loyalty showing off." "Well, I knew it wasn't her," The mare in the top hat said. "You did not," The red one retorted ". . .I'm out," Turn said, starting to walk away. "Hey, wait a minute," the unicorn used her aura to gently grip Turn's shoulder, "I bet you don't yet have a place to stay, so why not stay with us for now?" The pegasus rolled his eyes, "I don't really care. But if I'm going with you, I need to know your names." "Oh, of course," the unicorn said, "I am Sneak Step. The mare is False Witness, and the stallion is Hot Rod." Cruelty"My name is Heart Breaker," The green pegasus said to the grey wolf as she approached. The wolf whimpered softly, trying to pull herself out of the rusted trap that trapped her paw. "Shh. . ." Heart said, "Hold still, little one." The wolf yelped in pain as the pegasus dug a hoof into the wolf's foreleg just above the trap. Heart let out a soft chuckle, "Hurts, yes? Maybe I should just take it off and see how well you fare." The wolf whimpered and tried to bite the pony, only to find her head pinned under the pony's right hindleg. "Bad dog," she said, starting to press down on the trap, "Looks like the leg's coming off in just--Wha--mmph!" A magic aura wrapped around Heart's muzzle and pulled her away from the clearing seconds before a yellow pegasus entered the clearing. The unicorn pulled Heart Breaker out of the forest and into a small shack, "You know we're not supposed to be seen by the Elements yet, right? What you did was careless and premature." The other three ponies in the shack, a red earth pony, a blue earth pony, and a turquoise pegasus, looked over. Heart groaned, "Well, it seems we've found each other. Let me guess. Elements of Greed, Deception, Betrayal, and Wrath. Names in that order?" The red pony glared slightly in irritation, "In order. Sneak Step, False Witness, Turn Coat, and Hot Rod." "Ah," Heart nodded, "And I'm Heart Breaker. Element of Cruelty. And no need to worry about explaining things to me. I already know." Turn Coat sat up on the folded mattress he'd been lying on, "Wait. So, when Loyalty, Honesty, Generosity, Laughter, and Kindness mix up, it produces friendship. What about the opposite traits?" "That one's easy," Heart Breaker said with a smirk, "But I'll let you find out for yourself when you find Fragment." SolitudeThe trees around him concealed most of the light the sky had to offer. Sounds of animals echoed around the dark purple stallion as he started to walk slowly. A pair of yellow eyes followed the pony as he walked. Hearing a slight creak, the pony turned his head, "Is somepony there?" There was no response. The stallion swallowed a bit and continued walking. As his hooves rustled among the leaves, the creak happened again. "What's that?!" Nothing behind him. The stallion turned back around and was immediately met with the gaping jaws of a Timberwolf lunging in for an attack. He ducked and ran to the side, trying to escape the predator. The Timberwolf swiped its claws at him, managing to catch a feather off of his wing. . . I have wings! he realized as he rolled to avoid another attack before starting to gallop away. The wolf started pursuit. The stallion darted between two trees that the Timberwolf couldn't fit through. As the wooden creature went around the trees, the pony spread his wings and took off. ------ The stallion landed next to a lake, panting a bit. He went to look at his reflection. His coat was a dark purple colour, his mane was teal, and his eyes were an icy blue. The thing that caught his attention, however, was the horn protruding from his head. "I'm. . .An alicorn. . ?" "Fragment Soul. . .That's my name," he said, "But why am I an alicorn?" Memories surfaced in his mind. He existed to counter the Element of Magic for an unknown master. Suddenly, a tentacle shot out of the water and wrapped around his neck, pulling him under the surface immediately. Fragment struggled against the tentacle as it dragged him through the water. He saw the body it was connected to; A large squid-like creature with red eyes. It pulled the pony towards its mouth. Fragment continued to struggle, as he realized his horn could help him here. The creature stuck him headfirst into its mouth, removing the tentacle from him and shutting him inside as his horn started to emit its magical aura. A few moments later, the monster writhed and spat the pony out with enough force to breach the surface of the lake. Fragment gasped for breath and swam as quickly as he could back to the shore. Fragment shook his wings out and took flight to put more distance between himself and the angry kraken. The pony had a feeling, prompting him to fly in a particular direction. He eventually reached a shack and landed beside it. "He's here," a mare inside said. ------ "So, we've each been created to counter a different Element of Harmony," Turn said, "Do we have a collective name?" "Of course we do. We're the opposite," Sneak responded, "The Elements of. . .Mayhem." Heart paced a bit, "So, it should counter the elements pretty well if I simply kill Fluttershy." "No!" Turn, Hot Rod, Fragment, and Sneak said all at once. Witness jolted up from her nap, "What's the question?" "Why can't I kill Fluttershy?" Heart asked the rest. Hot Rod glared at her, "Because it's a kid's show, you moron." The other five slowly turned to look at him with confused expressions. ". . .What?" The earth pony asked, "It is!" WrathThe crimson earth pony opened his blue eyes. A lock of his messy brown mane hung in front of them before he pushed it to the side with a hoof. He saw a pair of fillies playing some stupid game with pieces of chalk. The stallion turned, ready to leave, when he heard the colts. "This is our spot, Clover. Go back to your little dollhouses," The older one, a white pegasus said. The younger one, a green earth pony, stepped forward and crushed the younger filly's chalk under a hoof, "You too, Flowery!" The younger filly, a yellow unicorn, whimpered slightly, "I-it's Flory. . ." The red pony started to shake. Leave them alone, you brats. . . He thought. "Nopony cares!" The green pony said, knocking the yellow unicorn's glasses to the ground. Don't touch her! The red stallion thought. It seemed as though he blinked, but the next thing he knew, he was standing in front of the two colts with a wooden bat in his hooves. The green pony had a swollen lump on his face, his black eye stuck shut. Both colts, and the older filly, turned and ran away from the stallion, while 'Flory' took a step back, trembling as she watched the stallion. "I--" he started, "I didn't mean to. . ." Seeing the fear in the remaining foal, and hearing the voice of a teacher, the stallion turned and ran. ------ "My name is Hot Rod," the stallion said to the bluebird sitting on the branch, "I don't know why, but I've been created to counter the Element of Laughter. Anger burns inside me, and. . .I hate it. I hurt a colt today!" His voice turned from angry shouting to pleading. "Please," he said to the bird, "Please help me!" The bird shrugged him off and flew away. "A bird isn't going to understand you," A mare said, "Let alone be able to help you." Hot Rod turned and looked at the mare. She had a blue coat and a silver mane. A pink baseball cap rested on her head, "I'm also created to counter an Element of Harmony. My name is False Witness." GreedEQUESTRIA'S LARGEST DIAMOND Those words caught the unicorn's attention as she sat up on the bench. She was dark silver, and had a deep blue mane. She set her hoof down on the concrete walkway. There was no sound. She tried stomping. It sounded as though she'd thrown a pillow at the ground. She checked her flank. A cat's eye adorned it, with the pupil slitted. She grinned a bit. That diamond would be hers. ------ Sweeper walked down the hallway, the light from his horn scanning the walls. He came across a shadow for just a moment, but when he looked for the source, there was nothing there. "Hello?" He asked, looking around, "Is somepony there?" A moment later, he opened his mouth the shout, but the shout never came. A bolt of magic energy shot through him, and he found himself waking up in the hallway with guards and medics. ------ The unicorn watched as a white mare walked the filly beside her into the clothing store. She kept herself hidden until she was certain the two were inside. She withdrew a book from the bag on her side and leafed through it. Moments later, her horn lit, and the voices from inside echoed in her ears. She listened for names. ------ "My name is Sneak Step," she said, walking down the path, "I was created to counter Rarity, the Element of Generosity. I seem to be an extremely fast learner, and quite adept at spellcasting. And I. . .I don't want this stupid diamond. . ! I want that filly, Sweetie Belle. Something about her. . .I don't know!" Sneak threw the diamond away with her magic, eliciting a yelp from someone around the bend. "Watch it!" A stallion snapped, as he came around the corner with a mare wearing a pink cap. "So we've found another one," Witness said, "And judging from your little monologue, the Element of Greed." "So there are indeed more of us," Sneak said, looking over them, "I'm sorry about the diamond. I didn't notice you before." "It didn't hit me," Hot Rod said, "I'm just quick tempered." "Now, let's see what we can figure out, ah?" Sneak suggested, "Your names are?" "Hot Rod," said the Element of Wrath. "False Witness," said Deception. "And as you heard, I am Sneak Step," The Element of Greed started, "And I won't lie for tact's sake. You look absolutely ridiculous in that hat."
