Chapter 4. Of Death.
Previous ChapterNext ChapterWater, cold, and a struggle for survival was all that filled my recent memory, yet. I'm still alive, but weak and very sore. Even though I'm without sight, my soaking wet fur that let me see, made me feel so blind. The sound of dripping water onto wet stone made it prevalent that I was in a cave of some sort. I couldn't help but wonder if anyone would know where I am? Or if I was even alive? But why can't I remember how I got here in the first place?
Tracing back my memory while forcing myself to stand up. All that I could recall was a hot wind that threw me off of my cloud into a vortex of swathing water dragging me deeper into an abyss, forcing me into my empty dreams. Then to wake up in a cave wet, and more lost than I have ever been. Sometimes I wished my life would stay the same, but my name says otherwise.
Splash! Splash!
My skin jumped to the sudden sound of objects falling in the underground cistern beside me. Thankful that my hearing wasn't lost as bad as I thought it was. I could tell that two objects fell splashing into the water were ponies, one heavier than the other. Another stallion perhaps? I listen carefully to emerge from the water so that I could help them ashore.
The first one that I grabbed was unconscious and a lot heavier than I thought he would be. The stallion that I dragged onto the; cold, wet, stone shore must have been at least twice my weight. Even with the help of the mare that emerged from the water by herself. Carrying him was still very difficult, but we did it none the less in silence.
Once the stallion was ashore, the mare, from what I could tell, did CPR on the stallion. The hard pulses she huffed out on his chest to make him breath did just what it was supposed to do. After a few seconds of compressing his chest, the stallion coughed up a gallon of water and stumbled drunkenly awake.
"Where am I?" the stallion asked.
"I don't know," the mare replied.
"Do you know Transient Cloud?" the mare asked me. Taken aback from the mares familiarity towards me, I took a guess at her name, hoping that I can figure out what happened to them.
"Is that you Scarlet?" I asked.
"Yep." she chuckled. "Sorry, I keep forgetting that you are blind."
"And the stallion?"
"I'ma Silent Knight. Nice ta meet ya."
"So, I don't suppose you two are here to rescue me?" I asked, but the response wasn't what I hoped.
"Sorry Cloud, but we have..."
SPLASH!
The sudden sound of another pony falling into the cave startled the three of us. Scarlet was the first to rush towards the sound with Silent right behind her while I stayed in my spot and waited. The sound of three mares coughing quickly followed the grunting of two ponies heaving whatever found its way to the bottom of the well.
"Aurora!" Scarlet shouted with great relief in her tone.
"What about me!" shouted back a new voice. "I almost got roasted by a dragon!"
"Well, it's your fault for being so slow Little Fox," spat Scarlet.
"Whatever."
"Can you two spot fighting we have a filly here that needs attention," Aurora barked at the two.
I walked towards them, using the sound coming from the trembling filly as a guide. Aurora noticed me but kept silent as the sound of her magic echoed through the cave.
"Where are we Aurora?" the filly sniffled, shaking in place. The water must be cold, which would cause problems in the future. I decided to warm her up with a little trick I learned back when I was her age.
"Aurora, let me warm her up," I said laying down beside the filly.
"Fine...fine," she sighed defeated.
The others looked around while I electrified my fur to create warmth for the Emerald Heart. The poor filly shivered beside me underneath my wing, but the heat from my electrified fur quickly warmed her up. I didn't know what happened while I was unconscious, but one thing was for certain. The dragon that knocked me off my cloud set the forest on fire.
After a while sitting beside a fire that, somehow, Silent Knight managed to make from the driftwood that fell into the well. Emotions began to rise. I could feal it, all of it. The pain and sorrow and loss emanating from everyone except Emerald Heart and I. was toxic. While they were silent and remembering the events that neither Emerald nor I have witnessed. Emerald curled close to me underneath my wing pushed away by Midnight Aurora and the others.
I didn't mind it at all, but it did worry me a bit. 'What happened up there in the Hallow while I was asleep?' Normally, Aurora was always the one to give the little ones comfort. She would never shun them away for anything. It was so unlike her to just push anyone or anything away when it needs help, and I have a feeling that Emerald Heart will need a lot of it.
Feeling the little one curled up beside me lit something up deep within my heart. I don't know what, but it was warm. Much warmer than a fire on Hearths Warming Eve. Whatever it was, I didn't want to let it go. It was strange having Emerald Heart beside me. It reminded me of better day's from when I was younger with Aurora.
Aurora and I sat in the yard and played with a cloud that I made. I was only six then, just a few months older than Aurora. Every day was the same. W; woke up together, played together, got homeschooled together, and waited for our mother to come home from work together.
One day, on a stormy night we waited for our mother to return home from the weather control center. At the time, she was the supervisor in organizing the pegasi weather creation teams. We both knew that the thunderstorm booming overhead was her creation because she always kept the rain over the Hallow gentle while the rest of the area took most of the force. Normally, she took only an hour of to get everyone organized then she'd come home, but she didn't.
Aurora, hungry and annoyed, she put on her raincoat while I slept like a baby on the coach. The thing that woke me up was a frantic pony rushing all over the house looking for my sister. Dazed from my unpleasant wake-up call, I trotted to the kitchen where the pony that woke me up was pacing back and forth.
"Hello?" I asked trying to get a feel of the pony so that I could recognize her.
"Cloud! Where's your sister, I can't find her anywhere!?" the mare asked. The tone of her voice instantly told me it was my mother, but the urgency in her voice was off-putting.
"I don't know," I yawned. "I can find her if you want."
"Thanks, sweet, but, j-just stay here, she couldn't have gotten too far."
My mother left the house to look for Aurora without me in the thunderstorm. I, however, didn't want to listen. I put on my yellow rain coat and trotted out of the back door straight into a torrent of wind and rain and cold. Even though I was blind, I always knew where my sister was at all times. If it was a gift, it wasn't a very good one.
I closed my eyes and felt the air around me, letting the rain patter my face. The gale made it easier in a way to extend my vision due to the amount of magical energy that is used to create it. I focused in on my sisters magical signature and quickly found her huddled under a fallen tree, unconscious. Startled, I didn't wait for anyone to return to check to see if I was okay or if Aurora had returned, and rushed to my sister's aid. I ran into the forest at full speed through the unforgiving rain. Using my special way of seeing, I found the fastest way to my sister, and thankfully, she was close.
I found her just in just a few minutes without any trouble. Aurora's leg was caught underneath of a tree with a black slash down the middle, most likely from a lightning strike. I sat by her side, feeling where her hoof was caught underneath the tree. I tried to push the tree off of her, but the mud made it impossible to get a good grip. Disheartened, but not giving in. I found a big stick and returned, but, due to my small size. I could not get enough leverage to lift the tree.
No matter how much I struggled through the rain, I wasn't strong enough to free her leg, but I didn't let myself panic. How can I do this? I thought. Then it hit me. I could use the lightning to break the tree that trapped my sister in the first place! "But how?"
I paced back and forth in the mud creating a moat around Aurora. The air around me was static signaling that another lightning strike was going to happen somewhere nearby. Without thinking, I climbed the tree to the center and lifted my hoof into the air and tried to direct all the static to my person.
In an instant, a violent jolt electrified my entire body, causing me to fall off of the tree and land beside Aurora. I laid there for a few moments, paralyzed from the electricity in the air. My muscles twitched violently and my heart beated ecstatically, but I pushed myself up to see if my horrible plan worked. The tree split in two right where Aurora was trapped she was free but still unconscious. I stumbled over to her to see if anything was out of place.
My heart sank when I saw Auroras leg twisted in an ungodly way like it was my fault and I would be the blame, but at least I knew that she was alive. I put aside my dread knowing that it wasn't truly my fault and grabbed her by the scruff and dropped her over my shoulders. She was heavy, but not too heavy. I carried her back home careful not to cause any more pain to her hoof if she felt any at all.
At home, the Hallow was alive with lights and shouting of many kinds. As I walked out of the forest, I saw; pegasi flying overhead heading towards the train station, I earth ponies carrying sandbags to the stream and, unicorns lighting the way with their magic, but I didn't pay any mind to them. I was more concerned with Aurora and her leg than the flooding that was going on in the Hallow and preceded into my house to where I found our mother and a few others waiting for us inside.
The second I walked in the door drenched from the rain and tired from carrying Aurora through the forest. My mother chewed me out for running off, but when she saw Auroras leg, she and the others took her off and taken her to the Medical tent, leaving me behind wet and miserable.
The next day I spent my time in my bed sick. I heard my mother talk with the doctor that Auroras leg was going to be fine and that she will be able to walk again in a few months. I was happy about the news, but I was also angry that I was not recognized for being the one that found her in the forest underneath a tree. Despite all of the chaos the night prior, I was glad that nothing too bad happened.
As the day ended, Aurora came back home with a cast on her leg. She was able to walk thanks to a spell that was placed on her cast that prevented any pain, but her mobility was limited. Our mother left for work again, leaving us at home and just as I was about to fall asleep. I heard a knocking on my door, followed by a limping Aurora coming in.
I looked at Aurora confused and she glared at me in return. Aurora walked up to my bed leaving the light off and, somehow, managed to climb up and curled beside me without saying a word.
"Aurora?" I said confused.
"Shut up," she replied.
