Everypony expects the worst of us Diamond Dogs, all we want is gems, gems, and more gems. They think we'd even go as far as kidnapping again just to receive more. Well, I honestly can't say there wrong. Us Diamond Dogs usually have a straight-fire plan to get more gems. There's Plan A, which is our basic job. We have to dig until our arms bleed to find a gem. And it's hard if you can't see where the gems are.
So, there's Plan B. Kidnap Rarity.
Ok, yes, that sounds drastic, but, when we first got that whiny, white unicorn, she did show us where gems were. And I'd never even thought to look there! Unfortunately, her friends came and rescued her before we could get anymore.
Now, she follows us more, letting us use her powers to get more gems, but she leaves an hour after she came.
But, why am I still dwelling on her first visit? That was a year ago. I really should continue with my life. My same, old, boring, life. I sigh as I reach my spot on the floor and I start digging. My neighbor appears seconds later. Wags isn't much of a talker, but, I feel the need to rant, so, I strike up a conversation with him.
"Hi, Wags."
He looks at me for a split second, still digging, then looks back at the wall, while grunting back a small reply.
"So, Wags, I heard that you won a prize, or something?"
He shook his head. "Sister did."
"Oh, your sister's staying with you?"
He shook his head again.
"Wha--never mind. Hey, could I talk to you about something?"
"I thought you already were." He said. A person next to him went to a different digging station, so he moved over, giving each us us twice as much room.
I gave a nervous chuckle. "Yeah, well, about that..." I paused, scratching the back of my head with a meaty hand. Suddenly, ranting didn't seem like such a great idea. "Well, I want to talk about something different."
Wags just grunted again. I took that as a "keep going" and continued talking.
"See, I just realized, I mean, do you like your life?"
"Sure."
"But...dosent it get boring after a while?"
Wags paused a moment. "Nah." He said.
I stiffened, paused, and looked at him. "Really?"
"Sure. Diggin's fun. Who would ever get bored of it?"
"Uh..."
"And them unicorns really do come in handy sometimes."
"Yeah, about that..."
"Plus, I hear we'll be getting a new extension soon!"
"I-wait, what? We barley made a dent in the caves we have now!"
"Yeah, I know. Isn't dit great?"
I realized that it was no use trying to argue my facts to Wags, or any other Diamond Dog for that matter. I lowered my head and ears and let out a heavy sigh. "Yup, it's great alright."
Wags had already moved on, concentrating on digging. We both heard a chink as his shovel hit something hard. Gasping, I looked over to see what gem he'd found. I guess he was thinking I was trying to steal it, because he shoved me aside and pried the blood red gem out from the dirt.
I landed with a hard thud on my back, but wasn't in any pain. The gem he pulled up seemed to hit a torch light just right, because it glowed. It took my breath away.
I got on my knees and crawled forward towards the gem. Wags, seeing me, kicked me in the face, sending me sprawling backwards. I didn't try to fight him, knowing I would loose instantly. Other people tried to pig-pile Wags, but it was no use.
With one arm protectively cradling his new-found gem, he fought the others off with ease. Some people almost landed on top of me, unconcerned that they nearly killed me, and went back to try to get the fire ruby.
At one point, Wags set his gem down so he had a better advantage. I didn't notice until a bit later. No one else saw the gem laying inches away from the pile, and I was about to grab it, when I heard the announcement.
Bruce, come to the surface immediately. Rover would like to talk to you. Again, Bruce, come to the main surface immediately. Rover would like to talk to you.
I grabbed the fire ruby and fled quickly to the surface, knowing I'd probably be dead as soon as I returned.
"It was such a good idea to hide cameras in their coats!" Spot cheered, watching the fuzzy surveillance. Fido was napping nearby, having been up all night and placing cameras he could crush in two workers outfits, owned by Wags and Bruce.
The screen was spit in half, one side having Wags camera, the others having Bruce's. "Yeah, well, about that..." Bruce was saying on Wag's camera, scratching behind his head. Rover sat back in the chair, interested. He had wanted to place tiny cameras in every workers outfit. However, he had to do a test first. He chose the names "Wags" and "Bruce" at random.
Spot and him heard a stiff grunt from Wags, and Rover was clearly mad that he didn't hear anything before the grunt. Spot noticed this and cautiously backed up a good five steps.
"See, I just realized, I mean, do you like your life?"
"Sure."
"But...dosent it get boring after a while?"
Wags paused a moment.* "Nah." *He said.
*Bruce stiffened, paused, and looked at him. "Really?"*
"Sure. Diggin's fun. Who would ever get bored of it?"
"Somethings out of line here..." Rover said, leaning forward. "Bring Bruce to me. Now."
Spot saluted, then stumbled with the microphone. It took him a couple minutes to get Fido out of the way so he could plug the mic in. As soon as he announced for Bruce to come up, Rover noticed something.
On the camera, Bruce hesitated before a large fire ruby. He then leaned in, snatched it, and ran up towards surface.
"Oh, Bruce..." Rover mumbled. "A bribe won't help you this time."
I appeared nervously in the door way, shaking from the adrenaline rush I got, after being chased by 50 other people. I shivered again as I tentatively knocked on the door. The red gem was cutting into my side, making it hurt. A tan human I'd come to know as Spot let me in. Spot and I were far from friends.
Friends isn't a thing that happens here. So, we were far from acquaintances. In fact, I wanted to be Rover's right hand man, since he's the leader of the pack. There were tryouts, and I knew he was going to point at me and say yes, but Spot pushed me out of the way and he ended up saying yes to Spot.
Which is why were enemies now.
And it's horrible to be enemies with the leader's right hand man.
"Oh, Bruce, please, sit down." The only chairs in the room occupied Fido, Rover, and Spot. "I don't have a chair."
"SIT DOWN!" Spot yelled. I was so startled, I sat down on the floor. "That's better." Spot finished.
Rover looked at Spot and Fido. Rover didn't think it was necessary to have two right hand mans, so Fido was his left-hand man, his brawn, if you will. "Get out." Rover said, staring straight ahead. I was confused, why would he call me down here just to have me leave?
But I stood up anyways.
"Not you, you idiot!" Rover catechized me. I quickly sat back down again.
The two other people on his right and left side got up and left. Fido closed the door behind him, so Rover and I had complete privacy. It was silent for a while, and I broke into a sweat.
"Do you know why I called you down here?" Rover asked me. I shook my head, not daring to say another word. "Because your not putting in as much effort as I'd like you too."
"W-what do you mean?" I ask, curiosity getting the best of me.
"I mean, you don't like your life in here, don't you? You think this life is boring."
"Uhh..." How did he know that? He wasn't there when Wags and I were talking, right? Maybe he was camouflaged...
"Bruce, face it. You and I both know that you don't like your life down here."
"I...Yeah...But, it's not like it's a bad thing, I just, maybe I could have a couple days off?" I suggested.
"Days off?" Rover shifted in his chair, making me, who was scared half to death, lean back a bit, throwing my self off-balance and winding up on my back.
"Y-yeah. Days off." I said from my position on the floor. I immediately scurried back to a sitting position.
"Oh, Bruce. Here's the thing. We can't trust anyone who thinks life is..." he waved his hand in the air. "...Boring here..." He finished. "So, I'm going to have to let you go."
"Let me go?"
"Your fired."
I gulped. I've had many sessions like this with Rover, and I always won him over by giving him a gem of some sort, but, I don't have one...something jabbed me in the side. I reached inside my vest and pulled out the gem from earlier.
"Would you let me stay longer if I gave you this?" I asked, holding up the huge fire ruby. Rover's eyes sparkled, and for a second, I thought he would take the bait. But, just as soon as the sparkle was there, it vanished with a shake of his head.
"No, Bruce. Bribes won't work this time." On cue, Spot came in and grabbed me by the arm, dragging me out of the office. But, I still had a question left. I grabbed onto the wall with all of my strength.
"Wait! Where wills I go? Where will I sleep? Where will I live?" Okay, make that three questions.
Rover chuckled slightly and gestured towards Spot, who was trying to pull me off the wall. "Spot will show you. We have a special place for quitters like you."
As soon as I opened my mouth to ask, Spot yanked me off, and Fido slammed the door in my face.
