My Little Pony: Flying Is Magic
"Rainbow Dash is going to teach me how to fly!" Scootaloo cheered as the Cutie Mark Crusaders rushed out of school. "Do you wanna come watch?"
"Sorry, Ah can't," Apple Bloom said. "Ah've got to help AJ on the farm." She ran off towards Sweet Apple Acres.
"I'll come Scootaloo," Sweetie Belle told her. "It's this, or being a model for Rarity's new dresses."
It wasn't hard to locate Rainbow Dash. The weather ponies had created a picture perfect sunny day, so there wasn't a cloud in the sky. Except for the one a certain rainbow maned Pegasus was sleeping on.
"Hey Rainbow Dash! wake up!" Scootaloo yelled. Rainbow rolled off her cloud in a way that reminded Scootaloo of how she gets out of bed on Monday morning.
"Right. Flying. I've got a friend who can help."
"Who?" Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle asked at the same time.
"Me!" Somepony shouted, and a grey Pegasus swooped down from the sky.
"Derpy?!" The Crusaders yelled in surprise.
"Why not? and besides-"
"I BROUGHT MUFFINS!" Derpy cheered, cutting off Rainbow. The Crusaders grinned as Derpy pulled a basket of muffins out of nowhere.
"First things first," Rainbow told Scootaloo. "Let's see how long you can stay in the air."
Scootaloo took off as Sweetie Belle started counting. "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6-" Scootaloo fell back to earth.
"Good job! 6 seconds is a new record!" Derpy said. "Sweetie Belle, do you want to fly too?" She asked, as if she actually thought that unicorns could fly.
"Well, I would, if I was a Pegasus, but-"
"Don't be silly! Can't you lift yourself up with your magic?"
"Umm...I'll try..." Sweetie Belle's horn began to glow light green, and soon her whole body was surrounded in magic. "Maybe I'll be the first unicorn to get a flying cutie mark!" She called to Scootaloo, who was trying to beat her new record of 13 seconds. The unicorn filly slowly started to rise off the ground, getting higher and higher until she landed on the top of a tree.
"I did it! I flew!" She grinned.
"Great! Now this is how you do a flip..."
Derpy and Sweetie Belle's voices faded into the background as Scootaloo's focus returned to flying. "Remember the proper technique we were practicing," Rainbow told her.
Apparently, the reason Scootaloo couldn't fly very well was that she flapped wrong. Her wings were trained to buzz like a hummingbird instead of flapping up and down like they were supposed to. This was from her many years of scootering.
She concentrated her whole mind on one thing. "Up and down, up and down, up and down," Scootaloo mumbled as she flapped. "Sweetie Belle can fly, and she's a unicorn! I'm a Pegasus, and I'm supposed to fly, but I can't! Wow, that's embarrassing." Scootaloo thought. "My friend who's not really supposed to fly can fly before I can! I'm supposed to fly, I'm supposed to fly."
"I WILL FLY!" Scootaloo yelled on the downstroke. She felt a powerful rush of wind, and closed her eyes.
"I'm gonna crash and make a fool of myself in front of Rainbow Dash. And Sweetie Belle. And Derpy. Why does this always happen to me?!" She thought, expecting to fall. But it never came. Instead, Scootaloo was getting higher and higher...
"Scootaloo! Open your eyes!" Sweetie Belle's high pitched voice broke Scootaloo's concentration. She opened her eyes and felt somepony's feathers brush against hers.
"Squirt! You did it! You're flying!" Rainbow Dash shouted over the wind.
"I am?" Scootaloo looked around wildly. She saw Rainbow Dash next to her, smiling. Sweetie Belle was on her other side, doing clumsy backflips in celebration, still surrounded by her pale green glow. Derpy was above her, holding the basket of muffins.
"Who wants another muffin?" She shouted happily.
"Me!" Every pony cheered.
Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo swooped and flipped and spun around in the sky, enjoying their new found freedom.
The view was incredible from this height. They were high enough so if you looked down you could see the little yellow lights in Ponyville's windows, covered by a thin misty blanket of cloud. They could see Canterlot straight ahead, with a beautiful sunset beyond that. The red and gold of the sun, and the black and blue of night swirling together in the sky.
Suddenly, a very out of place rainbow streaked in front of the sunset, not making an arch like a normal rainbow, but rather zipped by in a straight line. A Pegasus trail.
"Hi Scoots!" Rainbow Dash called. "Wanna race?"
"Ya, this is gonna be the best and most fun race ever!" Shouted Derpy.
"Last one back to the park in Ponyville...umm...LOOSES!" Sweetie Belle yelled, and she took off.
"You got a head start! No fair!" Scootaloo yelled as she raced after her, followed by Rainbow and Derpy. She didn't really care that Sweetie Belle had got a head start.
This was still the best day ever.
"Hey! Sweetie Belle!" The unicorn spun around.
"What?"
"Can you imagine the looks on Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon's faces when both of us fly into school tomorrow?"
Sweetie Belle didn't reply. She just hovered there with that really evil grin on her face that she had when she asked Rarity to go camping.
"What's taking you so long?" Rainbow shouted as she rushed past them. "I'm gonna win if you don't hurry up!"
The two Crusaders took off again, because they were never going to pass up the chance to tell every pony at school that they beat Rainbow Dash in a race.
