Mortal life, such a gift, one which many take for granted. And they are wrong to do so, here's a word of advice for you...
Live life to the fullest while you can, do not fear the end, as it will be rewarding if you have lived a full life. And remember, while you can die and move on...I no longer can. I do not recall how it happened, not even the faintest of thoughts, all I remember is a man in a white coat and black spiked hair saying...There is a reason for everything, you can trust me on that.
I don't know who that man was, nor do I have any intention to find out. All I know is that that man is responsible for this curse that has befallen me. I do not know what I did to deserve such a fate, but I can no longer interact with others, nor can I age or be harmed. Every mans dream right? To never die? To live forever?
They don't know how lucky they are that they can leave this world, I have no choice but to stay here, forever in a dimension in between heaven and the physical realm. Many call it purgatory, and they are close enough. I am but a spiritual entity, a spectator to the worlds events. I once prayed for peace and to be left alone...now my prayers have been answered...in the most horrible way possible. It's true what they say...
Be careful what you wish for...
It hit hard, it hit so hard to watch my friends and family disappear one by one, watching them ascend to the afterlife.
Being a spirt I can see souls leaving their bodies. I was there when my mother died in a fatal car crash. When her spirit floated to the clouds, she was able to see me for a brief second, the look of pain on her face, it left a feeling of eternal sadness in me that day. To think that I could no longer see my own mother...ever again...I still pray to be able to see her sweet loving smile one last time. What's worse is there is no one there to comfort me, I'm all alone.
If you ever feel a chill down your spine randomly, or you feel like you're being watched, what you're feeling is me watching over you. Don't be creeped out by it, I just watch you for awhile then move on.
It's been three thousand years since the day I became a spirit, there's now a legend about me.
The Legend of the trapped soul.
I guess some guy that I was watching a couple of centuries back must've got a stronger feeling of my presence, which happens from time to time, and decided to write some sort of story about it. I stuck around this guy, feeling interested, and to humour him a little. When he died I let him see me, I said to him...You were right all along.
Who knew that centuries later it would become a legend told around campfires to kids by there grandparents. It was nice to get some kind of recognition, however limited it was.
Over the years I've witnessed many things, the cure to cancer, world war three, four, five and six. All religions uniting as one, world peace, and of course...mankinds extinction.
Ten thousand years later, the last human died out due to over population and pollution in the air. Yeah they never fixed that. I wasn't alone though, the animals made it somehow, the forests began to grow again, pollution died out and the contents shifted, don't ask how I know that, had some kind of vision.
If you're wondering how I keep track of the years, I have some kind of internal clock that reminds me of the years...just more misery for me to bare.
The buildings and creations of mankind were slowly being digested by the planet, buildings crumbled, bridges collapsed, roads were buried by plant life and the rivers that were created by the contental shift were filled up. It was all actually quite beautiful, I was glad that I was able to see it. One good thing came out of being immortal. The ruins of buildings were being covered in grass and other plant life. Everything that man had built was now buried under Mother Nature.
Twenty thousand years later, I cannot even remember the face of my mother or siblings. I've forgotten my own name, and my age, it was somewhere around the 34000 mark. I continue to walk the natural landscape, alone, the animals can somehow sense me, and many look my way when I pass through. I'm glad I can at least be noticed. Now for the big time skip.
Millions of years later, the next sentient life had evolved, you'll never believe this, but it was ponies, griffins, basically everything out of myth from old earth. I discovered them when I was walking along a vast mountain range, when I saw a little village. I had no idea what was going on, so I decided to investigate. When I reached the village all I could do was laugh, there were unicorns, pegasui and normal ponies. They looked like they were straight out of a cartoon. I learned that they were from one of the other contents where there was a vast civilisation, I heard this from some of the locals that were talking to their young about where they came from. I viewed a map that was layed out on a table.
I couldn't wrap my non-existent head around it, of all things, it was ponies that now inhabited the planet, which they called Equus. I decided I should visit their home country called Equestria, as the village I was in was a settlement group. I hitched a ride on one of their boats and they set sail.
I learned around 700,000 years ago that I could fly, being a spirit and all, even able to walk through walls and floors. I could still walk on the ground and everything but I could fall through the floor if I wanted to. It took five weeks for the ship to reach Equestria, during this time I had time to view the ocean. I also listened to the ponies conversations. These ponies had learned full English, or as they called it, Equestrian. When the ship docked at the port I flew around the town, looking at all of the colourful ponies that walked the streets. I then flew straight into the air and yelled in excitement, not having to worry about anyone hearing me. I shot off inland to explore the landscape, I don't know how I could've missed all this.
I kept flying for a while until I came across a castle in the middle of a forest filled with thorns. Outside the castle were two young ponies and one,..I can't really say what it was, it was a mishmash of different animals. They were playing together, one of the ponies was small and blue and the other was slightly taller and had white fur and a flowing pink mane.
"You'll never catch me Tia!" The small blue one exclaimed while running from the white one.
"We'll see about that Luna. Discord, help me out."
"You've don't even need to ask Celestia!" The strange creature replied. I watched them play for awhile from the sky until it was time for them to enter the castle.
"Alright Luna, it's time to raise the moon." I chuckled to myself and was about to fly away when I saw the blue one float into the air and strike a pose, it then went from day to night. I looked at the sky then back to the filly. I don't know much about gravity or anything but I know that it's impossible to move the sun and moon like that...that being said...a lot can happen in a million years. I floated down to the area where the children were playing and sat down beside a river. I noticed that the white one had left a book behind, not much I could do about that. I sat there thinking about what has happened. I was about to leave when I heard a feminine voice behind me.
"Who're you?" I turned to see the white one with the book in her foreleg. She was looking in my direction with a curious look. Thinking she was talking to someone else I began to walk away. "Don't go!"
I turned around to see her curiosity had risen. Are you talking to me?
She nodded. You can...you can see me?
She nodded again. "My names Celestia, what's yours?" I couldn't believe it, after a million years, someone could see me.
I...don't remember my name...
She gasped and dropped the book. "You can't remember your own name?" I nod. "Do you have memory problems, or some kind of injury?"
No...it's just been so long since someone called me by my name, I can't even remember the people that called me by that name.
"How long?"
One, million, years...
"How...what...huh?"
You're actually the first person to talk to me in a million years.
"What?"
Actually, how is it that you can see me? Wait, can you describe my appearance?
She looked confused but nodded. "You're like a ghost, except your body is like a cloud almost, there's also streaks of different clouds circling your body and disappearing then reappearing." I really did look like a spirit then, when I looked at my body it looked normal to me, it could just be how this world chooses to view me. I decided not to question it, I focused on the more important thing...
Someone could see me...and hear me...
"Look I gotta go, Mr Starswirl will get mad if I'm out for too long, promise you'll come back tomorrow Ok?" She ran off without letting me answer. When she was out of sight I couldn't contain my excitement any longer, I shot up to the sky.
FINALLY SOMEONE CAN SEE ME, YEEES! AHAHAHAHA, THIS IS AMAZING!!! I started doing flips in the air and launched from cloud to cloud. I shot straight up and shot off towards a far away mountain range, resulting in a boom as I took off. I had a lot to think about, but right now I was releasing my excitement.
Back at the castle
Celestia walked through the main doors of the castle and was greeted by the bat ponies that were setting up for the night shift. Book in hoof, she walked into her chambers and placed the book on her dresser. She was about to climb into her bed when she was tackled to the ground by two small figures. "Luna, Discord!" She yelled in between giggles. They wrestled for awhile until they let Celestia go.
"What took you so long sis?" There was a loud boom that only the three ponies (counting Discord as a pony here, don't kill me) could hear. "What was that?" The rushed over to a window and looked out to see a clouded figure flying through the sky at an impressive speed.
"He's what took me so long." She calmly stated. Discord looked at the trail of clouds being left behind by the figure.
"Who is that?"
"I don't know, apparently he's forgotten his name."
"What?" Luna and Discord asked in unison.
"I know you guys won't believe me, and I honestly have a hard time believing it too, but that guy is over a million years old." Discord summoned two glasses of water for him and Luna, they both drank the water and spat it out. "Told you you wouldn't believe me." She turned her attention to the sky. "He said something about not being seen. He told me that I was the first person to see him in a million years." The two listeners sat down and hung on every word. After explaining what they had talked about, Discord asked her if he was coming back.
"I asked him to come back tomorrow, if we're the only ones that can talk to him, I'm sure he's going to come back." They all smiled and headed to their respective bedrooms, before he exited the room Discord took a glance at Celestia and sighed.
Celestia climbed into her bed, when she closed her eyes, she remembered how the figure had reacted when she spoke to him. Then one thought creeped its way into her mind...
How could someone be alone for a million years without going insane?
The next day I slowly flew towards the castle, admiring the lush landscape under the Orange glow of the sunrise. I had flown over a few towns last night taking in the beautiful scenery of this country under the moonlight. At least I was able to see all of this. I reached the castle a few minutes later, I sat down by the lake and waited for Celestia to return. Over the years I have become extremely patient, and I wasn't about to complain on waiting for someone who could see me, maybe her friends could see me too. I watched a few birds fly by when I heard the clattering of hoofs come faintly behind me. I turned my head to see Celestia and the two others from yesterday approaching. I smiled and floated slowly over to them. Good morning Celestia.
"Good morning to you too." She said with a smile, which I returned. I looked over to the others who were staring at me with curious eyes.
Who are your friends?
"Oh, that's my little sister Luna, and my best friend Discord." They both waved at me.
You two can see me? They both gave a nod, I was struggling to hold my excitement.
"If you don't mind me asking mister, what exactly are you?" Discord asked.
I am what was known as a human, although now I am a spirit, unable to communicate with the physical realm. I don't know how you three can see me, but I have been on this world way before your species existed. My kind went extinct long ago, all of their creations buried far beneath the soil.
"How did your kind die out?" Asked Luna.
Humans relied on technology to survive, but using that technology polluted the air making it difficult to breathe. As a result, the humans were killed off by their own stupidity, not once did they bother to repair the damage they caused.
"So how did you survive?"
Im an immortal ghost, I can't be harmed, I can't be seen nor do I need to breathe. I exist in a dimension between the afterlife and the physical realm, I've been so alone during the past million years, I've forgotten my own name, my mothers face, I've forgotten everything about who I was before I became...this...I can't join my race in the afterlife, I'm cursed to walk the earth for eternity.
"Earth?" They all asked in unison.
It is what my species named this planet, but I have a feeling your race has renamed it?
"Equus." Discord stated in a blank term.
Thanks, anyway, since no one else can communicate with me, I guess I'll just stick around if that's alright?
"That's fine Smokey, you can stay as long as you want!" Exclaimed an excited Luna.
Smokey?
"You need a name don't you?"
Yeah but, I think you can do better than Smokey.
The three children though hard until Discord snapped his finger. "How about Spirit?"
Hmmm...alright, Spirit it is!
We all talked for awhile, I told them what little I remember about earth and they told me the basics to Equestrian society. they shared a little about themselves and...I don't really remember a lot about myself. I remember some basics to human life but not much else...a million years does that to a guy...
Anyway, after we were all properly introduced Luna asked me an interesting question.
"Spirit, will you stay with us at the castle, we could use another friend?" She looked at me with the cutest expression I have ever seen in my immortal lifetime. I actually felt a twinge in my chest when looking at her...wait that sounds wrong-
Never mind, I looked to Celestia and she was nodding violently, I looked at Discord who was glancing at her, I flashed him a grin and turned to little Woona (that's right I went there).
Why not, I got nothing else to do other than walk aimlessly for eternity.
Luna jumps with joy and attempts to hug me, resulting in her body flying right through mine. A feeling of emptiness filled my soul, I could talk to these three, but I could not interact with them directly. I turned to see Luna pulling her face out of the ground, with a huff and an adorable pout, she walked over to her sister and sat down.
See, I can't be touched, I'm a ghost...
Discord and Celestia looked at each other, Celestia grabbed a book from her saddlebag and started flipping through the pages. "After I met you last night I snuck into the royal library in the middle of the night to find a book on spirits, you'd be surprised at how many there are on the subject. Now let's see...54, 55, 56 here we are, according to this a spirit can possess a body or figure to be able to interact with living creatures."
Huh...never thought about that before. Does it say anything about how you can see me?
"I looked for that, it says that if someone creates a ghost they can choose who can communicate with it, it doesn't say how they do this and don't go into incredible detail about it."
Thats understandable, I don't think many ponies have a ha-sorry, hoofs on experience with ghosts.
They all nodded. "So, should we try out that possession thing?" Asked Discord.
"Oh, you can try on one of the statues in the gardens!" Exclaimed Luna.
Very well, lead the way.
The blue filly hopped off excitedly, Celestia chuckled and Discord stuck to my side a few feet behind them.
Hey Discord, what's up with you and Celestia?
A blush appeared on his face causing his grey fur to go rose red. "I don't know what you're talking about."
I've seen the way you look at her, it's ok, my non-existent lips are sealed.
He breathed a sigh of relief and we all entered the castle. I was overjoyed to finally have some friends, but one thought crept up on me causing my smile to fade...
