Capter one: Are you sure?
"Thanks for helping, Spike." The voice came from a shy pegasus. "Hey no problem Fluttershy." Spike was keeping pace behind her on all fours. He was now in his teen years, and his wings finally grew in. He also lost some weight so he was more slick, but he could make himself look bad by puffing up his chest. "I'm just so worried about the little guy. He ran off when I wasn't looking." They were currently looking for Fluttershy's pet ferret. They both suddenly stopped once they reached the Everfree forest. "Look in the bush." Fluttershy pointed to a bush with her hoof. The tiny head of the ferret popped out then ran into the forest at the sight of them getting closer.
"Uh, Flutters? Don't you think he's trying to run away perhaps?" Spike noticed it's eagerness to get away from them. "Oh no never. Whiskers is either trying to play, or show us something." Spike just shrugged it off as they entered the forest. Fluttershy gave out a small whimper as the darkness swallowed them. "Sometimes I forget how scary these woods can be." Fluttershy covered half of her face with her mane. "Hey its just trees." Spike tried his best to comfort her as he looked around his surrounding area. "Besides if Zecora can live here how bad is it?" They both went stiff as a rustling was heard. Fluttershy jumped behind Spike peeking out slightly from his hind leg.
"What was that?" Fluttershy whimpered softly clinging to Spike's leg as they moved in deeper. "I have no idea." Spike went still listening to his surroundings. He lifted his muzzle up sniffing the air. Suddenly something jumped out of the bushes causing Fluttershy to squeal in fear. Spike took a stand flailing his wings, growling, and baring his fangs. He stood like that until he found it was just Fluttershy's ferret. He stood there feeling dumb as his wings flopped to his sides again. "Well uh, that's embarrassing." He rubbed his neck with a clawed paw.
"Whiskers!" Fluttershy jumped up from behind Spike to hug her little furry friend. "I am so happy you're ok." She hugged the ferret as if he would vanish. Fluttershy nuzzled him with a smile, and happy squeal. The ferret managed to get out of her grasp, and he crawled his way to a bush pointing at it. "Come on! We need to give you a bath." Fluttershy grabbed her ferret and she turned around, flying the other direction.
Spike started to turn around to follow until a strange scent filled his nostrils. He turned around sniffing the bush in curiosity. "Spike you coming?" Fluttershy turned around to the purple dragon who didn't even seem to notice her. He buried his snout into the bush more until it touched something warm, and hard. He withdrew eyes wide in shock. He came closer as he stuck one of his paws in the bush with caution, feeling around. His claws finally touched the same warmth. He carefully rolled the object out of the bush until an egg came into view.
Spike felt panic well up in him as he started to look over the dark blue egg. Noticing there was no damaged he huffed in relief. He carefully put an ear up to the warm egg listening to the movement. The baby inside was well and alive, but it won't last long without warmth.
"Spike are-" Fluttershy's words were cut off as she saw the egg. "O my goodness!" She gawked at the egg Spike was cradling in the crick of his arm as the egg was cradled to his chest. She went to grab it, but to her surprise Spike snapped and growled. Fluttershy landed on the ground with a whimper. When he saw the pony on the verge of tears holding her ferret, he shook his head getting back into focus. "Fluttershy.... I am so sorry." He started pleading to the pegasus who just smiled at him. "I understand, Spike. Let's go before it gets dark." They started to leave the forest, and Spike had so many questions.

"Is it a dragon egg maybe." Applejack asked as they sat outside the castle. "I mean think bout' it. If Spike here got defensive bout it maybe there a baby dragon in there." The six ponies marveled at the egg that leaned against Spike's side for warmth. "No it's too small to be a dragon egg. Besides dragon eggs are bumpy, this egg is smooth." Twilight went through all of her books of different eggs trying to find one matching that one.
" OOH OOH!" Pinkie Pie jumped up in excitement. "Maybe it's a new species, and maybe it gives out free cotton candy!" They all looked at the pink pony with confused looks. "Just saying." She sat down crossing her hooves. "Here let me take a look." Twilight went to touch it, and as before Spike did the same exact thing. Twilight pulled back in shock. "I.... I don't know why I did that." His voice swelled up with worry. "Did I hurt you?" Spike looked at his adopted sister with worry. "Startled yes, but hurt, no."
"Dude chill out." Rainbow dash said landing in the soft grass. "That's just it I can't. Everytime someone tries to take it there is a part of me that sees them as a threat." Spike curled his tail around the egg in a defensive way. Twilight rubber her chin with her hove before her horn started to glow. A piece of paper, bottle of ink, and a quill came through the open window towards her.
"Spike can you send this please?" Twilight handed him the paper. "What is it?" Spike asked before huffing his chest as gas entered acidic liquids in his fire pouch, and out came flames. "Oh just a note to the princess saying we have an egg emergency." They all just nodded waiting for a reply.

That afternoon the six ponies including Spike, sat in the main room of the castle. Twilight grew the doors so that Spike, and the egg can slide in easily. As they entered the room they saw the princess herself, and they all bowed. "Rise! We are all friends, and quite honest we have too much to cover." They all stood to Celesia's stern, but calm, words.
"Now, what happened exactly." They all turned to Spike who was cradling the egg with one arm so he was standing on three paws. He cleared his throat before speaking. "Long story short I found an egg, and my instinctual side became a little over protective." Celestia nodded with a serious look. "Let me at least get a look at the egg." Spike sighed before revealing it.
"When Twilight described the egg it sounded like a draconequus egg. This proves it." Everyone was shocked. "Wait then why is Spike so protective." Rainbow Dash crossed her hooves while she crosses her arms. "I think he can explain." With that she stepped out of the way revealing Discord.
"Are ya saying this is yer egg here?" Applejack tried her best to stay calm. "Yes and no. You see my ex mate, and her new mate recently had that egg. So in some sort of way i'm the step father. They didn't want the egg so they handed it to me. Yet as fate had it neither did I. Even though I am the king of chaos i'm not heartless, and even though I didn't want it I wasn't just going to let the child die. So I made sure that dragon boy here found it in that bush."
Everyone looked shocked to his commitment. "So you planned this?" Twilight squinted at him. "Yes I did. You see even if you wanted to take the egg away you can't because the egg imprinted on him.The bond at this point can only be broken by death." Discord put his 'paws' together as he laughed. "Why me though? Not that i'm mad, but why me?"
"Ah you see Spike. Mortals can't bond with the hatchlings, but it can't bond to someone unwilling either. Dragons are immortal, but that alone wasn't enough. I could have left the egg near dragons, but as long as they were unwilling the child inside is not capable of a bond. Hope wasn't lost though. You are bonded with the child because you are willing to be it's guardian."
They all look over at Spike then back to Discord. "That's so unfair! He is gonna be doing all the dirty work just because you don't want the responsibility. Take back the egg, and be the stepfather you're suppose to be." Rainbow Dash snorted. "NO!" Spike and Discord said at the same time. "Since it's bonded with Spike it sees him as it's parental guardian, not me so in a way i'm stealing my own egg."
They all looked to Spike again. "You sure you're capable of this Spike?" Spike just looked at the egg, and nuzzled it tenderly. "It's my child now. As Discord said I am willing to raise, and love this child like the father i'm going to be. You'll have to band me from Equestria to get this egg from me."
Celestia walked forward with a smile placing a hoof on his shoulder. "Than I grant you legal parental guardianship."
