“Order up!” Pinkie Pie called out from the kitchen, “table two!”
“Got it!” Pinkamena answered. She hopped on over to the door and caught the tray of food on her back with practiced skill before she walked off to the table and delivered the three fillies’ orders of ice cream sundaes.
“Here you go, squirts. Enjoy!” ‘Mena said to the fillies who were known better around Ponyville as the Cutie Mark Crusaders: Sweetie Belle, Applebloom, and Scootaloo.
For Pinkamena, Pinkie Pie’s twin sister, things were going great for her at Sugarcube Corner today. Well, it was a good day for her every day. She was always so cheerful and happy that it lifted the spirits of even the most depressed spirits she’d see come in daily and that would always keep her smile on her face.
“‘Mena, two more orders!”
“I got ‘em! I got ‘em!”
Pinkamena laughed to herself as she slid on her hooves and did a full 360 degree spin, stopping with her plot to the doorway just in time for Pinkie Pie to step out and lay two trays on her extended back. Since her hiring, Mr. & Mrs. Cake had seen an influx of business, for both the confections that Pinkie Pie made and the great food too. They couldn’t have been more proud.
“Tables one and three, ‘Mena.” Pinkie informed her twin sister, slipping back into the kitchen.
Pinkamena delivered the food to their respective patrons before heading into the kitchen where she could get a drink and take a break while Pinkie Pie cleaned up as the lunch rush came to an end. Taking a sip from the glass, the ice cold water rushing down her throat, Pinkamena watched as her twin seemed to wash every dirty dish with the speed of Rainbow Dash.
Now while she was in the midst of cleaning, Pinkamena trotted over and took a plate in hoof, looking it over. She was hoping to find a spot of grime still on it just to pick on Pinkie Pie, but alas, the white ceramic gleamed bright and spotless. With a shake of her head she set the plate back on top of the pile then went on her merry way, but not before purposely whipping her tail against Pinkie’s flank for her own amusement.
“Woo!” Pinkie giggled when Pinkamena’s tail hit her flank as she pushed aside the towering pile of clean plates. As Pinkamena left, Pinkie stole a look at her sister’s behind and giggled to herself.
Pinkamena smiled more. She still had a couple more hours to go before she could be free and go home, but she couldn’t think about that now as dinner time was fast approaching. As she went about doing her job, Pinkamena’s mind went about doing what it did best at times like these: it thought about that special somepony always on her mind.
She had been losing sleep now for a month straight and it was only getting to be more of a drag for her--more so than a year ago when she had first arrived in Ponyville and met her long, lost sister, Pinkie Pie.
Three questions had been on her mind for the past six months since she’d been hired in, and they were finally beginning to tear down her walls:
How do I go about telling her how I feel?
What will she say when I do tell her?
What if she rejects me?
Pinkamena knew there was only one way to end these sleepless nights and that was to simply confront this special somepony and confess to them her feelings. Simple, sure, at least that’s what she had once thought, but now she wasn’t so sure. Pinkamena wasn’t too sure how Pinkie Pie would react to her confession. They were sisters, after all.
After her shift was over and she said her goodbyes, Pinkamena was on her way home when she stopped and turned her head. She saw Pinkie Pie flagging her down--literally, with a bright rainbow-colored flag, in one hoof--as she bounced down the path towards Pinkamena.
While she may never fully understand her sister, Pinkamena couldn’t stifle the giggle that blurted out of her mouth, but she could cover it with a hoof out of embarrassment, which she did momentarily before she recomposed herself and faced the elated pony.
“Yes, Pinkie?”
Pinkie Pie stopped bouncing in front of Pinkamena, smiling like an idiot, and still holding onto her flag. “Where ya going tonight?” she asked.
Pinkamena wanted to facehoof at the question that had an obvious answer, but then she reminded herself who had asked it and instead laughed again before grabbing Pinkie Pie by both hooves.
“Pinkie, sister, I’m going home,” Pinkamena answered, trying not to laugh again at her silly twin, “where else would I be going?” She asked Pinkie Pie.
“Why do you always go home?” Pinkie asked tilting her head, “why not stay with me tonight?”
Stay with you tonight? Pinkie, I’d love that. Pinkamena thought to herself as she felt embarrassment wash over her face, “Uhh, not tonight, sister. Sorry. I got chores to do. Bye!”
Pinkamena let go of her sister and bit her lip, rubbing her hooves together. She wanted to scream ‘yes!’ to the offer, she really did, but Pinkamena’s self-esteem issues took hold and she did the first thing that came to mind. She acted hastily and took off at a canter, leaving Pinkie Pie in a cloud of dust.
“Good night, ‘Mena!” Pinkie shouted out to her sister. She giggled and headed back to Sugarcube Corner for the night.
‘Mena’s such a silly goose. Pinkie thought to herself, I wonder why she is acting strange?
From the moment Pinkamena arrived home, she locked the door and ran right to her bedroom and threw herself onto her bed. Like a lightswitch, the moment her face hit the pillow she began to sob silently into it.
“I’m sorry!” she sobbed. Pinkamena tried not to think about it, but the thoughts came to her anyways, as if they had a will of their own. She saw herself and the times she had hung out with Pinkie Pie, how each time seemed to be the happiest for her right up until they parted ways.
It was that way every single time, it never failed. Every morning she woke up, she was somber; melancholic even, right up until she was in Pinkie Pie’s presence. As soon as she was around her happy-go-lucky sister, she cheered right up and was at the highest of spirits.
After her eyes stopped watering and her sobs quieted, Pinkamena looked up from her pillow and looked at the photograph she had on her night stand. She smiled sadly at the picture of her and Pinkie Pie at the recent Summer Sun Celebration. Pinkie Pie was covered in white angel cake, but smiling big, while she had her hooves wrapped around Pinkamena.
“That was the best day of my life,” Pinkamena said to herself while she looked at how she was in the picture. She shook her head at how happy she looked, albeit she saw how flustered she was too, because Pinkie Pie had gotten cake in her perfectly straight mane and now it was all messy!
How did you come to develop feelings for her? Pinkamena’s thoughts spoke to her, What was the exact moment you decided that you loved Pinkie Pie more than just as a sister?
Pinkamena shook her head, hiding face-down in her pillow with her hooves over her ears. “Quiet,” She mumbled. For one night Pinkamena didn’t want to have to listen to her own mind talk to her, well, torment her, but it would seem she was not going to have that luxury.
Was it after you two bonded at Twilight’s birthday?
Or was it when you two were playing Truth or Dare?
“Quiet,” Pinkamena muttered a second time. Her thoughts would not listen.
Or was it when you realized how alike you both really are?
“SHUT UP!” Pinkamena screamed, throwing her pillow across the room and curling herself up in the corner of her bed, between the wall and frame, “stop judging me!”
The only way you’re going to have closure is if you confess.
“I know, now stop,”
But the question is: can you do it?
“Please, just stop,”
Will you confess? Will Pinkie Pie accept you, or reject you?
“JUST SHUT UP ALREADY!” Pinkamena yelled loudly before closing her eyes, pulling her knees together, and hiding her face in her lap; fresh tears flowing, “stop judging me...Why do they always judge me?”
When Pinkamena woke up, she found herself still slouched in the corner she had tucked herself away in hours ago. Raising her head slowly, she looked over to the window and saw the sun shining in. After a length of time she finally decided to get out of bed but she did so as slowly as possible. Pinkamena was dreading the day already and all she had done was wake up.
Pinkamena trotted out of her house and made way for Sugarcube Corner. She arrived early and saw Pinkie Pie hopping about like she always did while wiping down the tables before resetting them and making them presentable for the day’s customers.
“Morning,” Pinkamena greeted as she stepped in and yawned.
“Morning!” Pinkie said cheerily, “You’re early today.” she noticed, following Pinkamena into the kitchen. Pinkamena shook her head and smiled.
“Morning, Pinkie.” she replied, “I thought I’d help you around the shop today.”
“Oh, you really wanna help me prep?” Pinkie said with a big smile, holding a mop in one hoof and a pail of soapy water in the other. Pinkamena nodded and took the mop in her mouth then headed back into the lobby. Pinkie Pie followed like a rabbit, bouncing behind her dear sister.
Before Pinkamena and Pinkie Pie knew it, the coo-coo clock chimed, signalling that it was time to open for business on another sunny day, so being closer to the entrance Pinkamena trotted over and flipped the sign around then opened the door to look outside.
“Morning, Pinkamena!” Rainbow Dash greeted as she moved a dark cloud around.
“Morning, Rainbow,” Pinkamena grumbled as she looked down at an angle, avoiding eye contact with the ‘hot air balloon’ she secretly called RD.
“Why so glum?” Rainbow asked, feigning ignorance to know why Pinkamena’s cheery demeanor suddenly did a 180 spin, and her smirk gave it away.
Pinkamena shot a glare at the mare then turned and slammed the door shut with a flick of her tail. With the loud slam, Pinkie Pie averted her gaze from behind the counter and looked at Pinkamena. She looked grumpy now. Why was she grumpy? Pinkie Pie didn’t like seeing a pony with a frown so like her natural self she just had to help!
Looking around her, Pinkie Pie found a mop, a bucket, and a freshly cleaned serving tray all behind the counter within reach. She took a quick look back at Pinkamena who had begun going around to each table and wiping them down, narrowed eyes and a frown on her face. As Pinkie Pie brought a hoof to her chin and pondered ideas she was suddenly struck by the idea factory known only as Light Bulb.
“I got it!” Pinkie Pie hopped up with a hoof in the air before she gathered up the things around her and high-tailed it into the kitchen. Despite her obnoxious actions Pinkamena was lost in her own little world and did not notice Pinkie Pie’s disappearance.
“Alright, Pinkie, you know what to do,” She told herself as she pulled the mop handle apart and stuck the mop itself on her head and twirled the shaft around in her hoof. Pinkie picked up the tray in the other and held it against her side.
Pinkamena let out a long sigh as she finished wiping down the last table in the lobby. She knew it was the job of a weather pony to ensure the weather patterns were timely as planned, but after the night she had recently, she was wishing Rainbow Dash would’ve kept it sunny for the entire day, or at least until her shift was over and she was back at home.
“Well at least that’s done. Now I can open the door--” Pinkamena cringed, folding her ears down, at the sudden abruption of Pinkie Pie wailing. When Pinkamena looked up to see what her sister was doing, she saw Pinkie Pie sliding across thin air, strumming a hoof against a wooden pole like a guitar. She knew Pinkie’s antics to be more on the ‘what the buck?’ side of things, but why was she wearing a mop on top of her head?
The pink pony stopped mid-flight in front of Pinkamena and pretended to be playing a guitar for a moment before stopping and looking back at her. Pinkamena gave Pinkie Pie her reaction; a deadpanned look that held no emotion whatsoever.
“Thank you! Thank you very much!” Pinkie hollered, deepening her voice to impersonate a stallion.
Pinkamena raised a brow at what she guessed was supposed to be a reference that she didn’t get before she shook her head. “Pinkie, what are you doing?” She asked as she hid her smile from Pinkie Pie’s attempt at cheering her up.
“I’m trying to cheer you up. What else do I ever do, ‘Mena?”
“Just who are you supposed to be acting as?” Pinkamena inquired of her beloved sister as she tried not to think about how Pinkie Pie was managing at not only standing on the food tray, but also how it was staying afloat in midair. She had to mentally remind herself yet again that things never made sense whenever her jubilant sister, Pinkie Pie, was ever involved, so Pinkamena just shook her head slowly a second time and looked back up at her, smiling.
“Me? Why now pretty mare,” Pinkie Pie’s hoof caressed her sister’s chin, “you can call me Pinkie Guitar!” She answered Pinkamena with a half-lidden smile.
“Pinkie… Guitar?” Pinkamena raised an eyebrow to the name of what she suspected to be a reference to somepony famous, but she couldn’t keep her mind on track since Pinkie’s hoof had scratched her chin and the look in her sister’s eyes that just made her melt away.
The sound of the door opening, making the bell chime, stole the sisters’ moment and both realized they were at work. As if by some magical force, the tray Pinkie Pie was using as a one pony stage, hit the floor.
“Good morning, Lyra! Bonbon!” Pinkie Pie greeted the two regulars as she hopped up onto her hooves, still wearing the mop head like it was in style.
Exchanging a couple of laughs between themselves and Pinkie Pie, the two friends greeted back then sat at their regular table and waited for Pinkie Pie to hop over and take their orders.
During that entire time Pinkamena was lost in her own fantasy world and was completely unaware of two more tables filling up. When Pinkamena finally snapped out of her daze, she came eye-to-eye with Pinkie Pie just giggling to herself.
“What’s so funny, Pinkie?”
“Oh nothing, ‘Mena,” Pinkie replied, hopping away, “keep up the good work, ‘Mena!”
Pinkamena raised a brow at how weirdly Pinkie had just been and that was when she noticed she was holding a tray of food on her back and was serving it to none other than Rarity and Spike. Little did she know was that during her daydreaming her body had gone on autopilot and was serving patrons left & right without missing a step or fumbling to a different beat.
Outside, the sky cried and screamed; rain fell moderately and thunder and lightning made for the perfect storm. While it saddened Pinkamena to be stuck at work with the weather being so gray, she couldn’t help but think of what good things might come of it.
If the rain picks up then I’ll have no choice but to stay here, at Sugarcube Corner, with her. Pinkamena smiled at this thought as she delivered food to her regulars, the Cutie Mark Crusaders, as well as Derpy and Ditzy Doo before she trotted into the kitchen and saw Pinkie Pie whipping up a large order of sundaes and shakes.
“Uhh, Pinkie?”
“Yeah?” Pinkie responded happily as she filled a third tray with sundaes.
“What’s with all the desserts?”
“Oh these? They’re for the party at noon today, ‘Mena!”
Party? There was a party and it was today? Pinkamena felt her heart stop dead in its tracks at this revelation. She wasn’t ready to handle a party today, but of all the days, she had to. What was she going to do? She couldn’t back out now but she also couldn’t build up the confidence to see it through either. What was Pinkamena to do now?
Pinkie Pie must have seen the conflict in her eyes, or on her face, because she was now waving her hoof in front of Pinkamena’s face. Pinkamena blinked and fell back down onto her haunches and looked up at Pinkie Pie, ears flat and smile turned upside-down.
“What’s wrong, ‘Mena?” Pinkie Pie stopped smiling as she saw the anguish on her sister’s face.
“N--nothing, Pinkie,” Pinkamena stood up and went to walk away, but was stopped when she felt a hoof on her shoulder. She glanced back over her shoulder and saw Pinkie Pie smiling, but concerned.
“Something’s wrong, ‘Mena,” she said quietly, “please talk to me.”
“Pinkie, we have guests right now--we’re getting busy, and if there’s a party in five hours, we need to have this place ready for it.” Pinkamena replied back before smiling sadly at her sister and walking off.
Something is really bothering her. Why won’t she talk to me? Pinkie Pie thought to herself as she returned to her duties, glancing back at the fleeing Pinkamena until the mare was no longer in sight. “I know! I’ll make her a cake or a cupcake later tonight. That’ll cheer her up!”
If Pinkamena had to choose a word to describe her distaste for the ever-present thunderstorm, it would be flustering.
Flustering because the rain was loud and obnoxious, more so than Pinkie Pie when she decides to throw a party at the drop of a streamer;
Flustering because she just had to clean up the mess made by Derpy for a third time. Pinkamena swore up and down that Derpy was nothing but a big scaredy cat when it came to a few booms of thunder;
Flustering because the rainy weather was not helping her already downtrodden mood, nor the thoughts in her head returning to tease her and knock her down into the dirt.
But even as frustrated as she was getting, Pinkamena still wore a jubilant facade and did her job without missing a beat. As per usual, noon came and so did the party Pinkamena had been told would be taking place. Come to find out the party was for none other than Sweetie Belle and her friend, Button Mash, since their birthdays were so close together. It made Pinkamena smile to see two good friends enjoying the double birthday party that Pinkie Pie had dubbed: “The Most Awesome Super-Duper Sweety-Mashy Funnest Fun Party for Two.”
How her sister came up with the titles Pinkamena may never know, all of Equestria may never know, honestly, but she was sure that if nopony else ever knew, there was one that always would. And that one pony was her twin sister.
After the party ended and dismissed two hours later, Pinkamena helped Pinkie Pie clean up the mess and after that was done Pinkamena found herself staring out the front window just watching the rainstorm go.
Pinkie Pie found her sister sitting at one of the booths and bounced her way over, taking a seat next to her, and looking out the window too. Pinkie did this for two reasons: one, to see if her sister was looking at anything in particular or not, and two, to try and make her sister laugh when she’d notice Pinkie was so close to her.
It took Pinkamena a solid three minutes to come out of her stupor and realize that Pinkie Pie’s hip was pressing against her own. This made her face flush so she did not look at her sister.
“Yes, Pinkie?” she finally acknowledged her sister’s presence, now sighing and resting her chin on a hoof.
“What’s wrong, ‘Mena?” Pinkie Pie inquired of her twin, “something’s been on your mind all day. You can talk to me, you know.”
“I know I can,” Pinkamena answered back, her eyes locked on Rainbow Dash, who was moving the clouds around and causing more abrupt thunder and lightning to crackle. “It’s been a long day, sis. And it’s been a long month.” She told Pinkie Pie as she knew now her sister would not stop until Pinkamena divulged that which she has been keeping secret for the past six months.
“Well then do it, ‘Mena. I don’t bite!”
“Pinkie, thank you.” Pinkamena looked at her sister and flashed her a smile, “it’s very personal though,” --Pinkamena didn’t get another second to finish her sentence before Pinkie Pie was all over herself, crossing her heart then pointing to her eye-- “Pinkie Promise not to tell?”
That’s what Pinkamena had learned about her other half early on in their infant friendship, and she knew that whenever Pinkie made a Pinkie Promise, she kept it until it was fulfilled.
“I Pinkie Promise, ‘Mena. I won’t tell nopony.” Pinkie promised Pinkamena.
With another fake smile, Pinkamena nodded her head. “Pinkie, I have a crush on somepony,”
“You do? That’s great, ‘Mena!”
I knew you’d say that, Pinkie. Pinkamena thought, “Yeah, amazing, I know.” she joked back, covering her mouth to fake a giggle, “but I’m not sure they’ll return my feelings.”
“Whaddaya mean by that, ‘Mena? If you like this special pony then they must like you back; there’s no excuse!” Pinkie Pie answered joyously.
Knew you’d say something like that too, sister. Pinkamena smiled again to Pinkie Pie, “well, I’m a bit shy and nervous, Pinkie, to tell this special pony, and it’s been eating at me for a couple months now,” Pinkamena’s heart was betraying her, allowing her to confide in her aloof other half so easily, but she didn’t mind it right now. Maybe this is exactly what she needed,
“and I don’t know if they feel the same for me so I’m really nervous and scared that if I confess my feelings to them and they don’t like me then they’ll,” Pinkamena stopped as she felt her eyes watering up. She looked away quickly so that Pinkie Pie could not see her cry.
“‘Mena, it’s okay,” Pinkie Pie rested a hoof on her sister’s shoulder and smiled, “I know it’s tough to do, trust me, I did it once before but was turned down.”
“R--really?” Pinkamena sniffled then looked back at Pinkie Pie, “you mean, Cheese Sandwich, right?” She recalled the stallion Pinkie Pie and her friends had told Pinkamena of, both how Cheese Sandwich and Pinkie Pie met up to their relationship, but never how it ended.
“Mhm. Things went well for a little bit but then he just left me.” Pinkie continued on, “so trust me, ‘Mena. I know how hard it is.”
“Then what should I do?” Pinkamena asked her experienced sister.
“Just tell them the truth, ‘Mena.”
Tell them the truth? Pinkamena filed that away for future reference, “how can I if I’m afraid they’ll ignore me?” She questioned curiously next.
“That’s the funny thing about life, ‘Mena, you don’t know. All you can do is say it anyways to get it off your shoulders and hope for the best.” Pinkie replied back to Pinkamena. Her response sounding more like something Princess Celestia would say and not Pinkamena’s sister, Pinkie Pie.
“I’m afraid of rejection, Pinkie, so I don’t think I can do it.” Pinkamena confessed next, her head hanging low and tears slowly building up more, “I can’t handle more rejection,”
Pinkie Pie lifted Pinkamena’s head with her hoof and smiled at her. “‘Mena, everypony’s afraid of being rejected. But I promise you everything will be okay. Just tell them and smile.”
Pinkamena stayed silent for a few minutes as she pondered everything her sister had just said to her. Pinkie Pie looked confident and was even confident that whoever Pinkamena had a crush on would return the feelings mutually. Did Pinkie know that that special somepony was her? If so, how long has she known, and why did she stay quiet about it?
“Thank you Pinkie,” Pinkamena smiled for real this time then motioned that she wanted to get out of the booth. Pinkie Pie complied with a smile. “I think I will tell them, after all. I’ll tell them tonight.”
“That’s the spirit, ‘Mena!” Pinkie Pie said excitedly, more happy to see Pinkamena actually smiling and not faking one this time, “you tell them your true feelings and everything will be alright!”
When the clock finally donged three o’clock, Pinkamena was the first to be out the door. Pinkie Pie saw this from the kitchen and smiled. It wasn’t odd or out of place for Pinkamena to do such a thing on some days. But today was unlike the others because just as fast as Pinkamena had left Sugarcube Corner, Pinkie heard the sounds of hooves cantering back inside and they were closing in on her.
When she set the last plate down and went to see who it was, she and Pinkamena had almost ran into the other. Pinkamena, though, was faster. She tackled Pinkie Pie and hugged her before composing herself.
“Thank you, Pinkie,” Pinkamena mumbled, “will you come to my place after work?” She whispered in her sister’s ear before letting go and bee-lining for the door again, this time leaving to go home for real.
“She’s in a hurry. Must be she wants to get ready for that special somepony.” Pinkie figured as she went about cleaning the kitchen and lobby as she also served her guests.
The moment five o’clock came around, Pinkie Pie, after having over-achieved in cleaning the entire shop, closed up and grabbed the cupcake she had made for Pinkamena then made a gallop off towards Pinkamena’s house like she had asked to do.
As she came upon her sister’s house, Pinkie stopped and looked around. She didn’t see any tracks leading to the door or anywhere around the house so her first thought was that Pinkamena had not actually come home, but Pinkie Pie needed to know for sure. What if something happened to her sister? She’d be devastated!
“I know!” Pinkie Pie trotted up to the front door and knocked on it three times then waited for an answer. When she did not get one, she knocked again. And when she was not answered for a second time, she grabbed the handle and gave it a twist; it was locked.
“Locked? Is she not home? Wait, maybe she is home but locked the door!” Pinkie Pie told herself. She then reached into her bountiful mane and retrieved a bobby pin. With a quick jiggle of the pin, the lock disengaged and Pinkie was in.
When Pinkie Pie opened the door and stepped inside, all was dark. She could make out a simple red rug that led down the length of the hallway. The walls were a plain white and had a few picture frames hanging up, each retelling the story of good times.
At the end of the hall, Pinkie Pie saw the faint glow of light to the left, and she guessed that the light was either dim because the door was nearly closed, or it was from the lights being dimmed manually. She followed the corridor to its end then turned left and faced the door that was cracked open. It was open enough that Pinkie Pie could look in only to see part of the bed, a nightstand, and the source behind the dim lighting: a candle. The room was aglow by candlelight.
“Hello?” Pinkie called out curiously as she pushed open the door and took a step inside the bedroom.
“Hello,” Pinkamena greeted back.
Pinkie Pie cocked her head and blinked. Pinkamena was wearing a pair of black stockings adorned with a single magenta-colored bowtie, her straight mane was styled in its usual fashion; combed down along the right side of her face, but she had something new adorning it. Like her stockings, Pinkamena wore a larger bowtie in her hair on the opposite side as her mane, and it was also a magenta tone.
“Do you like?” Pinkamena asked Pinkie Pie as she sauntered up to her sister.
“I do, but why are you dressed up, ‘Mena?” Pinkie Pie asked with a sign of curiosity in her words.
“I felt like it was necessary.” Pinkamena answered back as she was now a few inches away.
“Is this for your special somepony?” Pinkie raised the question next. She was trying not to let on that she knew already what was going to happen, but her ever-cooking body was making it difficult.
“It is, Pinkie, but I have to confess something to you first.” Pinkamena gulped and took in a breath, exhaling slowly, before she looked her sister back in the eye with a solemn look, “Pinkie Pie, my special somepony--the one I have a crush on,”
“Yes, ‘Mena?” Pinkie Pie heard her words come out like they were on a rollercoaster.
“Pinkie, I have a crush on you.”
She said it. Pinkamena, through sheer willpower and boosted confidence from Pinkie Pie herself, had finally confessed her true feelings. Now all she had to do was wait for Pinkie Pie’s answer.
What if she rejects you? The voice asked Pinkamena, She won’t. She said so herself. I’m not afraid anymore.
“‘Mena,” Pinkie Pie recalled her promise she made to her sister a couple hours ago and smiled. She was proud of Pinkamena for being able to confess to her because Pinkie herself sure couldn’t have done it, and Pinkie was one of the most shameless ponies around. That much was a given fact.
“Yes, Pinkie?” Pinkamena’s ears lowered some as did her head, but her smile stayed locked in place.
“I’m your special somepony?” She asked, Pinkamena nodded curtly, “I have something to say now, too,” --Pinkie said as she felt her heart pounding in her chest while Pinkamena simply nodded her head again-- “You’re my special somepony, ‘Mena.”
Four words. Four words and Pinkamena’s heart was aflutter, filled with happiness and self-renewal. Pinkie Pie said four words to her and made all of the negative feelings melt away; replaced with self-confidence and joy. It brought a tear to her eye and Pinkie Pie must have seen it because her sister stepped closer to her and wiped it away with a hoof.
“‘Mena, do you remember the Summer Sun Celebration? The one I got covered in cake at?”
“How could I forget? You got cake in my mane.” Pinkamena chuckled.
“That was when I felt my feelings for you become more. I saw the pain you endured when you first found me and I watched the smile cover your face when you felt happy again.” Pinkie told her, now caressing her sister’s cheek.
“It was? How?” Pinkamena held back her tears but found herself in the pink pony’s hooves, crying.
“Everypony thinks I don’t understand things like being hurt or ashamed, but I do,” Pinkie told Pinkamena, “more than they’d ever know. After you told me what happened between you and your adoptive parents, I saw the real you in those blue eyes.”
Pinkamena and Pinkie Pie’s eyes locked onto each other; one told a tale of sorrow and hopelessness, and one told the tale of hope and confidence. Pinkamena could feel her body warming up, or maybe that was just the warmth from Pinkie Pie, she didn’t know and she did not care right then. All Pinkamena cared about as she cried on her sister’s shoulder was that she had confessed her love to Pinkie Pie, and in kind, Pinkie Pie returned it with her own confession.
“Pinkie, I…” Pinkamena could feel her cheeks flare up at what she wanted to say next to Pinkie Pie, but before she could say anything coherent, all she heard was the two of them speak in unison:
“I love you, Pinkie,”
“I love you, ‘Mena,”
Before they puckered their lips and kissed. In that one kiss, Pinkamena’s first ever kiss, she felt fireworks go off; her heart pounded against her chest, her hooves weakened and wanted to buckle, her mind finally went blank and had a much needed moment of peace, and most of all, Pinkamena’s heart could finally rest.
She could not believe she was actually in her sister’s hooves and her own lips were pressed against her sister’s, locked in a passionate kiss, so she opened one eye to see if she was maybe dreaming. She was expecting herself to open an eye and see she was back in her own bedroom, on her bed, holding a pillow and was kissing it instead of Pinkie Pie.
She was wrong because there was an eye staring right back at her as if Pinkie Pie herself were thinking the exact same thing about Pinkamena at that same moment.
