Author's Note

Starting off from the original Sonata's Ryde ending a few months after.

A Downward Ryde

It was the first day of school and the first day of Ryder's job as a security guard. He pulled up in the parking lot with Sonata lying in the back seat holding a guitar case with the name 'Rocky' written on it in cursive. Ryder wore a long sleeve button up and a pair of jeans and canvas sneakers. Sonata wore a leather jacket, a black tshirt, and a pair of dark jeans along with boots. As Ryder put his car in park he gave a sigh. "...Sonata... I'm glad Scootaloo isn't here to see you like this..." He said looking back at her. "...crying about it isn't going to bring it back... Trust me Scootaloo tried it with mom and dad..."

Sonata sat up and whimpered a bit. "....Can you stop calling her 'it' Ryder...?" She asked. "...Rocky hasn't been an 'it' until I found out I was PREGNANT!" Ryder sighed slouching in his seat as Aria and Adagio walked by taking a glance into the car.

"...Sonata please your friends are right outside... Dash should already be inside with Scootaloo... We have a job to do!" Sonata sniffled tearing up and started to sob lightly. Ryder opened up his door and stepped out looking over to Aria and Adagio. They were just by the gate about ready to go in. "Hey! Aria! Adagio! Can you girls give me a hand here? Sonata's crying about the miscarriage again!"

Aria and Adagio looked like they were arguing with whispers. Just then Aria grunted stamping her foot. Adagio looked as if she huffed. "Alright alright! Don't throw a fucking tantrum Aria!" Adagio snapped. They both turned back around and looked at Ryder. Ryder smiled a bit.

"Having a friendly little conversation you two?" Aria pushed Ryder aside as Adagio slid the seat up. Adagio looked to Ryder.

"Would you just keep quiet? It's not the first time you had us dealing with this!" Ryder sighed.

"Look I'm sorry I'm having you do this but who's gonna help Sonata besides me? My sister cant say anything. She'd start crying about our parents. Dash is just a fucking blabbermouth and well... The rest just aren't comfortable with that kinda stuff."

Aria rolled her eyes as she pulled Sonata and her guitar case out of the car. "Well you're lucky we're here to help her." She said balancing Sonata on her feet. Sonata hugged her friend as Ryder took her guitar case. She shushed Sonata. "...C'mon lets get inside and sign in... Maybe some coffee or some tea could help you calm down..." Adagio helped Aria pry Sonata off and slung her arm over her. They backed away from the car allowing Ryder to close the door and alarm it.

Ryder followed the girls in front of him. Adagio looked back. "...She stay at your place last night?" She asked. Ryder nodded. "Well... Something tells me she could've needed others to help keep her mind off it... Right again?" Ryder nodded again. "Ah... Well next time you need someone over there don't be afraid to call us."

Ryder carried the guitar case under his arm as best he could. "Noted." He said. "Anyways... How was your guy's summer? Didn't see you much... Well... other than the times I called you which was just a few times...." Adagio sighed as they went through the gate.

"Well other than the calls I had to do something for my dad when he got back from up north. He heard I got arrested and forced me to either make something or he just booted me from the house until I could make some money. Oh and... Thanks for getting Aria and I a job here.... And for putting me up in your guest room when I couldn't be in my room..." Ryder hurried in front of them and knocked on a side door marked 'Employees Only'.

"Don't mention it... Seriously I cant let anyone know I got you hired on. Just say the principal forgave you if anyone asks." Aria and Adagio nodded. Sonata still just cried. The door opened and there was the principal.

Principal Celestia wore a white skirt and sports coat with golden trimming. Her hair was tied into a ponytail and she wore red rimmed glasses. "Ah good you're all here!" She said closing the door as they all went inside. "You four are nearly late! Why weren't you here for helping with passing out the schedules and the ID cards? Why is Sonata crying?!" Ryder stopped as the girls went out of the room into another. He looked over at the principal.

"I am so sorry she's on about a.... a small... loss that happened a few months ago..." He blushed and averted his gaze as Principal Celestia crossed her arms.

"It's about the miscarriage isn't it?" Ryder looked to her shocked. "Look. Your cousin is a snitching machine. Not only that but she was the only one to qualify to be a gym teacher this year. And yes your sister has her as a teacher so you don't have any worry about a male teacher lure her into his office... Happens one time you never hear the end of it...." Celestia walked out of the room with Ryder at her side. They came out into the office where they saw Vice Principal Luna sitting with Sonata, Aria and Adagio helping them fill paperwork out. "Ah... Right right I forgot about that.... You need to fill out an application so the superintendent knows that you're on the payroll... She knew about your situation and I promised if I brought you on to work that i'd bring you onto payroll. My advice get a credit card so I don't have to hear any complaints about the lack of paycheck in your mail..." She sighed going into her office. "Oh how I miss the days of just getting it handed to you...."

As Celestia closed the door to her part of the office Ryder sat down with Vice Principal Luna and the girls. She slid an application in front of him. "Here, hurry and fill it out!" Luna said. "Classes start soon and you still have to meet your supervisor! Mr. Armor isn't going to like it if you never show up to his office! You do remember where that office is don't you?" Ryder nodded and pulled a pen from his pocket.

Just across the table Sonata was just drawing hearts on her application. She wrote 'Ryder + Sonata 4ever' on a few but one had 'Rocky' on it and she drew angel wings and a halo on it. Aria sighed and pushed her application to Vice Principal Luna. "Here... I'm done here." She said. She glanced over at Sonata. She huffed seeing her paper riddled with stray pen marks and heart's. Some broken. "Sonata come on! Stop moping around and fill it out! You'll get another child some day!"

Sonata sniffled and pushed her application to Ryder. "...Sorry... I... I just need something to drink..." She said getting up. As she stepped away she stumbled. Aria quickly caught her.

"Something to drink and eat more like it.... Something tells me you didn't eat anything last night or this morning."

Ryder sighed as he started on Sonata's application. "Nope. Couldn't get her away from her guitar case..." He said. Aria looked back at Ryder.

"Did anyone ask you? I don't think so!" Ryder glanced up at her.

"Was she gonna tell you? I don't think so! Just get her calmed down and hurry! The longer the kids see a teacher crying the more they're gonna blame someone close to her and the more rumors that are gonna spread." Aria rolled her eyes and slung Sonata's arm over her shoulder.

Sonata looked to Aria as she peeked out into the busy hallway with students looking for their lockers, planning out their routes for going class to class, and just talking with their friends. "....I-I'm fine walking on my own Aria!" Sonata snapped.

Aria turned around and pinned Sonata against the wall. "You aren't!" She replied. "With this crying, you not eating and possible dehydration you could pass out at any minute! You, Adagio and I are supposed to be teaching music classes! You're supposed to take on choir while Adagio and I take... What ever the hell they want to play. Now take a deep breath... Maybe we stop by the bathroom and you splash some water on your face. Okay?" Sonata nodded a bit and started to breathe as deeply as she could. She shuttered a bit as she exhaled. "Alright just... Keep doing that for as long as you can until we get to the teachers lounge." She grabbed her friends hand and they went out into the hall. Sonata shielded her face from the prying eyes of the students around her. To Aria the brisk walk was just a few minutes. To Sonata it was just a walk of shame. A long walk. A few minutes turned into a half hour. A half hour turned into a day. A day to a week, a week to an entire year. Aria quickly sat the shaky girl in a chair and went to a few vending machines putting money in both before pressing the button of canned tea with lemon and F7 for a bag of original chips. Aria went back to her as the things vended. "Sonata! Sonata look at me! Deep breaths!" Sonata whimpered putting her hands in her lap.

"...Th-they were laughing at me... I.... I heard them all..." Aria grabbed the drink and the bag of chips setting them both in front of her friend and sat down next to her.

"Sonata no one was laughing. I doubt anyone but you, me, Ryder, Adagio and... Well.... Dash but she's not stupid enough to tell kids. She does and you hear she did it from one of the kids she's as good as gone! Now c'mon eat up and drink up. First days always the hardest." Sonata gave a hesitant nod and tried opening up the bag of chips. Aria sighed and took the bag opening it for her before cracking open the can of tea.

Over with Ryder he had just finished the job applications and handed them into Vice Principal Luna. Adagio was in the corner of the office away from them talking with Principal Celestia. Ryder sighed laying down on the table. Luna looked to him as she put the documents in order. "Is something wrong Ryder?" She asked setting the applications aside. Ryder shook his head. Luna sighed. "Since the guidance counselor isn't here yet and... Neither is Mr. Armor but I'm here to talk with you. Why don't you tell me what's got you down?"

Ryder sighed and sat up. "It's Sonata.... She's been on this for a few months now..." He said. "...I've been strong when I could but... When she's not there... I just cant help but just cry myself I mean... That was my first child.... The first one I ever had.... and wanted... Sonata had me there with her to get an estimate when the baby is due but... Doctor did a pee test on her and... Few hours later.... He calls us in... brings us into a private office away from anyone else... Tells us... He's sorry... There's nothing more he can do and.... Straight up tells us no more baby..." Tears came to Ryder's eyes. Luna took a deep breath and sighed.

"Ryder... Let me tell you something..." She replied. "It's not good to dwell on the sad things. A story runs through our family. Would you want to hear it?" Ryder gave a hesitant nod. "Alright... Be warned it's a bit weird. Once there was a young girl who had just lost her mother and father. Her parents loved her a lot. Always gave her presents of everything she wanted. After they passed on that girl met her soul mate. She spent years with him nearly forgetting about her parents deaths until one night an angel visited her in her dream. That angel took something from her. Her first child. Still in the womb. The girl tried stopping the angel from taking her baby but the angel took the child back to his realm. The girl cried for many months. Her soul mate stayed at her side consoling her. One day her soul mate gets up and leaves her alone for a while. In that time the angel came back. She asked the angel why he took her child. The angel looked into her eyes and said: It's for your parents. They missed you. That they want a new child. She replies and asks why take her child and not give them her. You want to know what he says to her?"

Ryder sniffled as Adagio and Principal Celestia came over and sat next to Ryder. "Sister are you telling that ridiculous story mother told us long ago?" Celestia asked. Luna grunted a bit and nodded.

"I'm telling Ryder that story so he knows how to cope with the loss of his first child!" She snapped. "Would you please just find Aria and Sonata? They need to know where they need to report if they have a problem!" Adagio hugged Ryder as he sniffled.

"Don't you have a job to do? Being on look out for a rogue school police officer and his wife?" Luna huffed a bit.

"Sister must I explain it again? Ryder is having a crisis, no guidance counselor, and we still have to WAIT for him. I want to open Ryder's eyes and have him realize what he's going through has a positive end to it yet you come and ruin it! Mother told us this story, our grandmother told us this story, this story basically dates back to our great great great great grandmother! Why share it within the family when other families are in the same boat?"

Adagio looked up at the Principal and the Vice Principal who were in each others faces. "Would you two stop arguing please?" She asked. "The more this goes on the more Ryder thinks the you-know-what is his fault which it isn't! He doesn't abuse Sonata, her parents are the greatest ever, neither I or Aria have had the urge to hit her since our time in the slammer but neither of us hit her since before that! I would let Luna finish the story!" Luna huffed standing up.

"I'm sorry but I cant finish that story! My sister ruined my helpful nature. I need to go and keep an eye out for school police and the guidance counselor!" She looked to Principal Celestia. "I hope you're happy! Any students I get I'm sending them your way! If I were you I'd be expecting Snips, Snails AND Diamond Tiara today! Do not be surprised if Ryder comes to me for advice and not you!" Luna turned away and walked out of the office into the hall.

Principal Celestia sighed. "...Great... First impression freshmen are going to think of us as a feuding family..." She said pinching the bridge of her nose. She looked to Ryder and Adagio crossing her arms. "I am so sorry you two had to see that. I wouldn't worry about Luna though. She usually forgives me by lunch time. Just... I don't know talk things out."

Adagio pulled Ryder off and stood up. "I didn't want to do this but I'm leaving you two alone." She said pointing to Principal Celestia and Ryder. "The youngest ones here are acting more adult than the most senior staff members!" She looked to Ryder as she backed away. "Ryder if I notice something about Sonata today I'll give you a call. Try and stop crying before you get sent home." She turned back around and hurried out into the hall. Celestia looked down at Ryder and sat with him.

"...She's right... I'm acting like a child... But about your problem... That story meant something big to Luna. That story was supposed to tell you to be happy about things but wait a while on the family. Your parents must miss you and your sister so much they took your child and tried telling you to focus on Scootaloo until you know you're ready. Go ahead and listen to some music. I know how much it calms your nerves." She patted Ryder on the back and got up.

Ryder gave a nod and took his phone from his pocket. He had his ear buds wrapped around his phone. He took them, plugged them in to his phone before putting each bud in his ears. He sighed as some classic rock music started to play. He closed his eyes and leaned on the desk and waited. Just waited. He knew how long each song was that passed. 3:23 for a hippy rock song, 7:12 for a fast paced metal song, 5:37 for a heavy rock song. So he waited a little over 16 minutes for the entire thing until Officer Armor came in with his wife, the guidance counselor Mrs. Cadence. Officer Armor was also called Mr. Armor since 'officer' for him was too much. He had dark blue hair and wore the standard navy blue police uniform. Mrs. Cadence had pink, purple and yellow hair and she always wore bright pink to come off as friendly to the students and brighten up the dullest of places. Ryder looked up and saw them entering the office. Mr. Armor came over and put his hand out as Ryder took his earbuds out and shut his music off. "Alright hand it over." He said. "You know there aren't supposed to be any electronics out during school time, especially in the office!" Ryder ignored the order and put the earbuds away in his pocket. Just as he was trying to put his phone back Mr. Armor took it. "That is not what I said, I said give it to me not put it away! You're obviously in trouble here. Why else would you be in here the first hour?"

Ryder huffed and grabbed for his phone snatching it back. "I'm waiting for YOU!" He snapped. "I'm supposed to help you with the troublemakers around here. I'm the new security guard!"

Cadence pushed the two men apart. "Woah there I sense some high tension here!" She said. She looked over at Ryder as he put his phone away. "I am so sorry Ryder he never got the memo about you working here. I was supposed to give it to him but... I lost it..." She smiled nervously and looked back at Mr. Armor. She looked back to Ryder. "That's not what that tension is from is it? Waiting for us isn't much of a stressful deal. Nor is working the first day of school it's always a calm day." Ryder sighed and averted his gaze.

"...I-it's just personal stuff with my girlfriend being involved... Can we just get to the knowhow on the what do in here? I don't wanna nab someone and end up hurting them somehow."

Officer Armor sighed. "Well I guess a professional is gonna have to help." He said sitting down at the table. "Lawsuits will not make anyone happy. Especially the principal!" He patted the seat next to him. "C'mon. Have a seat. That phone of yours have a voice recorder?" Ryder nodded as he sat down. "Well pull that thing out and fire it up. Your mood can depend if you'll listen or not and anger means almost no listening." Ryder nodded again and hesitantly pulled out his phone before setting it on the table. He unlocked it and tapped a voice recorder app. He looked to Officer Shining.

"Uh... You think you can just record everything and I'll take notes later? I... Kinda need to take a walk." The officer nodded and Ryder got up.

Mrs. Cadence followed Ryder out the door into the now empty hallways. He shoved his hands in his pocket and sighed. "Something tells me this problem is a big one." She said almost startling Ryder as she came to his side. "Almost no one walks away from a police officer unless they have a big problem on their mind. Is there any chance we can talk about it?' Ryder gave a shrug.

"...dunno... It's just.... I don't know if I should be talking about this with anyone other than my girlfriend... Especially out here... You never know who's listening." Mrs. Cadence hummed a bit.

"What if we replace names with letters? Would you feel comfortable then?" Ryder hesitantly nodded as they turned down a hallway. "Well then let's hear it. I promise if there's anything that happens that makes you stop talking just stop off, take a breath and take as long as you need." Ryder nodded and stretched a bit.

"...Let's say... Just before school let out A got B pregnant... A was happy to be there with B but when they went to the hospital to determine when C was going to be born... Dr. D said C wasn't going to be born because of uh... complications and said we lost her... A ended up getting over it a bit but still cries seeing B all broken up about C... A tries to help B but A cant find a way to help himself... It was A's child...."

"From what it sounds like to me A might need to just talk with B. B may try to help with A to forget about C and vice versa. As they say it takes two to tango. Perhaps sometime today you should pull B aside, somewhere private, I'll be happy to let you use my office to talk but know if anything other than talking goes on-" Ryder sighed blushing a bit.

"....Yeah... not gonna do that at a work place with students around. I'm here to be professional and do my job RIGHT." Mrs. C chuckled a bit.

"I was going to say be quiet and clean up but what ever you want!" Ryder sighed as he stopped and leaned against the wall. Mrs. Cadence smiled and walked on. "Don't forget Mr. Armor has your phone. Walk around a bit more but get caught out in the hall one of these teachers might make the mistake of thinking you're a student. But don't worry we should have our lanyards and ID's by the end of school today. Remember to breathe deeply Ryder!" Ryder gave Mrs. Cadence a thumbs up before pushing off the wall and walking the opposite way down the hall.

Ryder stretched and put his hands behind his head thinking of a way he could approach his chat with Sonata. Could have Principal Celestia or Mrs. Cadence watching over the conversation, sit around in Ryder's living room naked, or being in his car with the window's rolled up at the beach during sunset with romantic music on the radio and- "RYDER!" Two voices called out making Ryder jump as he got to an intersection. He looked to his left and saw Principal Celestia running towards him while on his right was Officer Armor hurrying to him.

Ryder huffed. "And just as I was starting to calm down..." He said as Officer Armor tossed him his phone. He caught it and shoved it in his pocket. "Alright, what's the matter? Is there already someone putting graffiti all over the lockers?"

Principal Celestia grabbed Ryder's arm and started to pull him the way she came from. "Ryder the only trouble here is with Sonata!" She said. "Aria left Adagio alone to go check on Sonata when she went into the bathroom and apparently she just lost what she ate and I need you to get her out of the bathroom and get her home."

Mr. Shining hurried to Ryder's side. "Must be the same problem because the very same Aria called you and I uh... May have accidentally answered it when I was trying to stop the recording." He said averting his gaze. "She said something about a janitor, a blanket and not to ask any questions." Ryder looked to the school police officer next to him. "Don't worry I didn't say anything I just hung up!"

Ryder rolled his eyes and pulled his arm away from the principal. He started into a run down the hall. He turned the corner in the 'arts' wing of the school and saw Aria pacing back and forth in front of a bathroom door as a janitor cleaned nearby. She looked up and saw Ryder giving a huff. "There you are!" She snapped grabbing Ryder by his shirt. "Sonata went on and on about the you-know-what and just as I'm walking her out here she pisses herself and hides in a bathroom stall. I'm pretty sure she's puking too! Get in there and get her out! She's unfit to work today!" Ryder had no time to reply before she pushed him through the bathroom door and into a wall on the other side. Aria looked to Principal Celestia and Officer Armor. "Sorry! I just... I usually hit a punching bag when I'm pissed off and the new gym teacher wouldn't let me use the weights room before class." Officer Armor sighed and looked to the Principal.

"I'll just get back to my post. You can handle everything from here cant you?" She nodded and leaned against the wall to the right of the bathroom door.

Just inside Ryder was knocking on a stall door where Sonata was leaning against the door. "Sonata! C'mon baby get out of there!" He said. "C'mon if someone comes in, sees me I'm out of a job because they'd be scared I'd do something to them! You know what I'm talking about don't you?" Nothing but sobs from inside. "Dammit Sonata don't make me drag you out of there! We cant have any of the students seeing you just pissing your pants! I don't even want to hear you complaining about a rash! Can you please come out of there? I just... I actually need to talk with you..."

Sonata sniffled and hugged her wet legs. "...What...? Why wont you just leave me....? I'm the reason our daughter is fucking dead...." She said. Ryder knelt down and put his hand under the stall and on Sonata's side.

"Sonata you aren't at fault... I'm not at fault either... No one here's at fault... Vice Principal Luna told me something a while ago... She told me a story about how a couple lost their child the same way we're going through... She told me that the reason we lost her is because a set of parents in the afterlife miss their children so bad an angel came and took the couples baby... My mom and dad probably took ours... You seeing what I'm saying don't you...?" Sonata nudged Ryder's hand off and stood up. She took her jacket off and tied it around her waist.

"....Your parents probably think we weren't ready... Right...?" She grabbed some toilet paper and blew her nose.

"...It's either that, the fact that they miss me and Scootaloo or.... Maybe both... Now come on... Longer you stay here, more of a rash I've gotta apply ointment to..." He thought for a second. "On second thought... Lets just go home and you stay in those pants and get that rash." Sonata turned about in the stall and unlocked it before stepping out with a smile on her face.

"...I don't think so Ry... You wanna put ointment on a rash you just wet your pants now and I wont let you change all day." She went over and hugged him giving him a kiss on his cheek. He blushed hard and kissed her back. "C'mon... Lets just get out of here... I need a nap... Was actually starting to fall asleep at my desk before this..." Ryder gave a nod and walked her to the bathroom door. As they walked out Ryder saw only Principal Celestia standing against the wall. He shot her a hesitant smile.

"Uh... You think I can actually get today off? Sonata's only willing to go home if I go with her... I hope that's okay."

Principal Celestia gave a sigh and smiled. "As long as you both are back by tomorrow and tear free I'm fine with it." She said. "I'll inform your cousin you went home. Knowing her she'll tell her friends and your sister and they'll do something I have no clue about or will even ask about." Ryder laughed a bit.

Sonata yanked on his arm. "C'mon funny boy...." She said. "If we hurry we can probably make it home before I puke again..." Ryder sighed and followed his girlfriend down the hall.

Not long later Ryder was in his car driving down the road. Sonata was asleep in the passenger seat, there was no music on the radio. Nothing but the sound of the engine. Ryder sighed glancing at Sonata as he stopped at a red light. "...I really hope we can get through this together..." He said softly as he caressed her cheek. He grasped the wheel again and just stared at the red light across the road. Just stared. No blink. Not even glancing at something else. The silence was peaceful. Serene. That serenity was quickly interrupted by a violent guitar solo coming from his pocket. His phone was going off. He quickly dug into his pocket and pulled his phone out seeing it was Rainbow Dash. He huffed and tapped the answer button putting it up to his ear. "Dash don't you have a class to teach?"

Ryder heard a laugh from the other side. "Please second period is my prep." Dash said. "I get a break now, then comes lunch and before you know it I'm out of there while you get stuck waiting about an hour after school for everyone to clear out." Dash laughed some more as Ryder started off down the road again.

"Dash just shut up and listen to me. I need you, Fluttershy, Rarity, AJ or who ever to take Scootaloo back to my place. They HAVE to stay there with her, help with homework do what ever it takes! I'm thinking of staying over at Sonata's for a while just to make sure she's gonna be okay."

"Don't you mean if YOU'RE going to be okay? Last time I checked you were broken up about the kid too." Ryder sighed feeling a bit down. More down.

"Dash... I hate it when you're right..." He slowed to turn a corner. "...I just wanna talk with her, see if I can help her and... Maybe get her to help me... This brought me back to when my mom was pregnant with Scootaloo... Doc said there was a chance we'd lose her but look at her.... She came out happy and healthy... I went and saw myself in that situation... Except there was no warning... Just a 'hey your baby is dead!' Wasn't like that exactly but... You know what I mean."

"Yeah I do know what you mean. You honestly have me and who ever by your side."

"Drop the 'me' and name someone else and that's right."

"Do you want me to get my mom to pick Scootaloo up or should we just leave her here?"

"Fine but I hear one word about something else going on with me and Sonata and I can blab to who ever about what ever I want about you. Got me?" Just then a siren went off startling Ryder. Sonata jumped but just shifted in her seat. "By the way call your mother because YOU got me a fucking ticket... And I hear something other than a fucking 'sorry and how much' in an hour from now I'm contacting Principal Celestia to have half your paycheck cut to give to me." He huffed and hung up as he pulled over to the curb. He kept the phone in his hand as he rolled down his window. He glanced in the rearview and saw a patrol car pull up behind him. He looked over to the drivers side mirror and saw the door open. Out stepped a familiar but still frightening face. Officer Dusk. Sonata's father.

Ryder didn't even flinch as Officer Dusk stepped closer and closer to Ryder's door. He stopped and bent down looking into the window. "Two things son. And I don't mean License and Registration." He said. "One, what's my little girl doin' in your passenger seat asleep and two why aren't you both working? You get the wrong date or something?" Ryder sighed not even meeting his gaze.

"Sir in all do respect we both got the day off, her because she uh.... Lost many things including her bladder and her breakfast and me because... I'm just worried about her...?" He finished off that sentence feeling hesitant.

"Ah... Well since I'm here and I already caught you on camera, license and registration son. I'll make it quick." Ryder set his phone in the cup holder and carefully maneuvered to pull out his wallet.
