Twilight Sparkle, Princess of Friendship, didn't get visitors.
The Castle of Friendship, for all the good the name did, was very intimidating, standing much taller then city hall. At certain times of the day, the shadow covered nearly the entire village of Ponyville, and every other part of the day it gleamed and shone like the sun itself. But the bigger issue was the mindset of everypony towards Princesses. To most ponies, Princess Celestia and Princess Luna were ponies that you could not just knock on their doors and ask them for a cup of sugar. No, for most, they were leaders with too much work and too little time, and could not meet the common pony. This thinking is why the Day and Night court exist, so that those that fit that mindset are satisfied in knowing that some time in that busy schedule is meant for them. Unfortunately, Twilight did not have a court. Yet. For others, it was simply a case of excuses and rather cruel thoughts. Some would say it's too far. Others would not recognize the Princess of Friendship as a real princess. Even the ponies of Ponyville while they wouldn't alienate her during her time in town, would not enter the castle.
So when Spike the dragon heard the three rapid knock on the giant door of the castle, he was understandably shocked.
