Fluttershy stood on the edge of the cloud staring at the ground below her, paralyzed by the distance of the fall. 'Why am i doing this?'
"Come on shy! Just Jump"
"I- I can't" she turned away from the edge with her head hanging low.
Fluttershy had only been at flight school for 2 weeks now. She always tried her best to avoid contact with other ponies, always afraid of what they would say to her. Nopony had been mean to her, but they haven't tried to be nice either. Atleast, this is what Fluttershy thought. Rainbow Dash was her only friend, her best friend. The reason why Fluttershy had talked to Rainbow in the first place was only because they were roommates for the remainder of the summer flight school.
"Fluttershy, you're a pegasus, you've been living in clouds your whole life and you're scared of heights? Really?"
Fluttershy didn't sat anything, the canary yellow filly only nodded her head slowly while staring at the ground.
"Shy, look at me"
The small pegasus lifted her head slowly and looked into her friends crimson eyes. She always thought they were beautiful, everything about her friend was beautiful. She let out a small sigh as she focused on what her friend was saying.
"You need to do this, Shy! if not for yourself then do it for me!"
"It's... I... can't" She let her head drop and turned away from the blue pegasus, doing her best to avoid her friends stare. She knew if she looked at her friend she woukd be filled with the guilt of her failure.
"Maybe you just need a little help getting off the cloud"
"What do you me-" Fluttershy started, interrupted by her friend who had put her forehooves on her flank and shoved her over the edge.
The yellow filly found herself falling through the air towards the ground. When she realised what was happening she let out a scream and covered her face with her hooves, waiting for the inevitable impact with the ground. 'I wish I could've spent more time with Rainbow before the end...' A single tear escaped from her eye as she fell.
However, the impact never came. Instead she felt the hooves of her friend wrap around her waist and tighten. The air slowly stopped rushing past her as they came to a stop in the air. Fluttershy took her hooves off of her eyes and looked up at her friend who was struggling to carry her back up towards the cloud that she had been pushed off.
Once again she let her head drop. "I'm sorry... I failed" She said softly.
"Don't worry shy, you'll get it one day. I believe in you!"
It wasn't long before fluttershy felt her hooves make contact with the soft cloud. She felt Rainbows hooves unwrap themsevles from her waist. She turned around and saw the blue pegasus fall to the cloud.
Fluttershy found herself staring at the pegasus laying on the cloud. Her ruby eyes, her rainbow mane and tail, her baby blue coat. Everything about her was beautiful. Fluttershy felt her stomach tie itself into a knot and a light red creep onto her cheeks. 'Why do i feel this way about her?'
"Come on shy, I think that's enough for today. Let's head back to our room, i'm tired."
'I have to do this' the yellow filly thought 'for Rainbow'
She walked back over to the edge of the cloud where she had been pushed off and looked down at the ground once more. 'You have to do this. You know how to fly. You can do this.' A look of determination spread across her face as she readied herself to dive off the edge.
"Are you sure you want to try this again? It's great you're trying, but you could hurt yourself pretty badly, I don't think i can catch you this time" Rainbow moved up next to her yellow friend, who was now hesitating to push herself over the edge. "i won't push you this time either"
"I can do it. I will do it. For you..." Fluttershy said softly. She realised what she said and bit her bottom lip hoping Rainbow didn't hear.
"What was that?"
"Nothing'
'Here goes' She let herself fall over the edge, fighting to get her wings to open. 'Just open your wings. just open your wings' she repeated in her head.
After about 3 seconds of falling she finally managed to pry her wings away from her sides and level herself out in the air. She allowed a smile to spread across her face, proud of what she had accomplished, and because she could hear her friend cheering her on from far above. The sound of her voice made her heart flutter 'She really is a great friend, now I just need to fly back to her'
She started to make her ascent towards the cloud, with hundreds of thoughts bouncing around her head. 'I can't like her. She's a filly. I'm a filly. That's not normal. I'm not normal... Why does it feel so right?'
She landed softly on the cloud in front of Rainbow Dash, who quickly hugged Fluttershy.
"That was great, Shy!"
"T-thank you Rainbow" Fluttershys heart began to beat faster and a light red spread across her cheeks. She returned the hug, not wanting to let go.
"Uhh, Shy? You can let go now"
As Fluttershy let go of Rainbow she quickly looked at the cloud beneath her feet trying to hide her now darkening cheeks with her long pink mane. "Sorry..."
'She's your best friend Fluttershy. You can't like her that way' Fluttershy was having a mental battle with herself, one that Rainbow noticed.
"Hey, Fluttershy, is something wrong?"
'Just tell Rainbow and get it over with! Maybe she will feel the same way, or at least say it's ok' Fluttershy thought for a litle while longer 'I can't, she'll think i'm weird and never talk to me again'
"Fluttershy?"
"Huh? Oh, i'm... fine" Fluttershy whispered. There was a stinging behind her eyes as she was fighting back tears. 'Rainbow will never feel the same about me'
Rainbow saw how upset she was but decided not to ask about it. "It's getting late, I think we should go back now"
Fluttershy nodded her head and followed Rainbow.
'Fluttershy really is tense' She looked behind her and forced a smile at her friend. 'I hope it's nothing too serious'
