The sky was dimly lit by the new moon. Twilight was observing it’s phases on request from Princess Luna. Her quill sat at the ready, scribbling down notes as the night went on. New moon. Only 12 cycles left now. Twilight mused.
Sitting a few floors below, the mirror sat alone in one of the many rooms in Twilight’s castle. Princess Cadence had offered to move it, seeing as Twilight was officially the expert on the internals of the mirror. However, since it being there Twilight found herself drawn to it more often. She wasn’t afraid to admit that she missed Canterlot High and her friends from the alternate. But she wasn’t willing to confess that they weren’t the reason she wanted to go back.
Snuffing out the candle in the tower, she made her way down the winding staircase. She hovered a few inches of the ground, making her way silently to room where the mirror was residing. Cracking the door open, she saw it sitting idly in the middle of the room. The door shut softly behind her, and she stepped hoof on the ground and made her approach.
The mirror reflected her state back at her. Her mane was dishevelled and bags hung under her eyes. A look of desperation was washed over her features, as she knew it wasn’t open. But maybe Luna was wrong. Maybe every other cycle it opened on the 11th or 28th moon - Surely there was due to be some margin of error in their studies?
Twilight had poured ludicrous amounts of her time into researching the mirror. She feared that she was neglecting her princess duties, but no one seemed to notice. After all, the routine hadn’t changed - just the subject she was focusing in.
Twilight lifted a hoof and hung it in front of the mirrors surface. Taking in a short breath, she pushed it forward.
A solid ‘clink’ gave her all the information she needed.
Tears formed in the corner of her eyes. Her head dropped, hoof remained still on the mirror.
I can’t go any further than this.
She missed him. He plagued her thoughts. The lingering image of him in her mind grew weaker every day, but the wanting feeling was not going to leave.
Flash Sentry was a million worlds away. The moons couldn’t cycle quick enough for her. She had only told her friends minute details, for how could they understand. She may be the Princess of Friendship; but she’d almost give it all up to go back.
I want you so badly. It’s my only wish.
She ached. Physically and mentally she was exhausted. She was consumed by the mirror. She checked it daily, occasionally twice when she saw the moon still hanging around during the day. She pulled her hoof away from the mirror’s surface. Moonlight filtered through the window, Twilight knew it would be morning soon. Circling the floor in front of the mirror, she tucked her legs in underneath her and settled in for another sleepless night.
