So much was different, Marina thought, as she paced the same route around her office for the thousandth time. The chocolate mare bit her lip, shivering a little as she felt her body flex. She could try and pretend otherwise or deny it all she wanted, but... everything was different.
She closed her eyes, breathing slowly in and out, trying to steady herself. Trying to find that little bit of peace, trying to convince herself that... everything really was okay, even though it had been a month and... even if she had been grateful at first, even if she knew she should still be grateful to Discord for giving her another chance at life…

Marina felt her body rippling, but she swallowed it, contained it: it had been almost a week since she had allowed herself to return to her new 'natural' form, but the last thing she wanted was to spend any time in a body that... just wasn't her own. Wasn't it bad enough she had been reincarnated as a walking, talking chocolate pony? That had been hard enough for her to get used to, let alone for Phantom to adjust to.
Yet all the same he had, and he had loved her for who she had been, and he had loved her in spite of the fact that even when they were at their most passionate, she'd still had to maintain some kind of control, she'd still had to be careful, or her chocolate body would lose its consistency. But he had made the best out of it: even with the accidents and the occasional smears of chocolate left here and there and everything else, they had smiled, and laughed, and he had made her feel so beautiful and so wanted...

Marina tried to force the thoughts away, and did her best to concentrate. To maintain her mare's body, and to maintain her composure, too: like it or not, these walls were thin, and the last thing she needed was anyone running in here to check on her.
She eventually got herself under control, then shook herself briskly out as she felt her body settling. She sat back, reaching up to gently smooth out her blonde mane as she looked down at the ground, murmuring: “I'm okay.”
Marina nodded to herself: she really was. She straightened a bit, raising her head and giving a small smile before she took a slow breath, feeling her body calming, returning to its new normal. But even if she was calmer now, what was she going to do from here?
Phantom was around right now, and it hurt to think that she came in here to try and avoid him. She had never imagined they would be doing this, dancing around each other, trying to take on different jobs in the barony just so they wouldn't see each other, Phantom always in his private workshop and her in the office whenever they were at home together. They tiptoed around each other, slept at different times, ate at different times... and yet even with Phantom's impressive skills as a tracker and hunter and her own stealthiness, they couldn't completely avoid each other all the same. Not even in a manse this large.
The mare shook her head slowly, smiling faintly all the same. She loved him, wanted to be with him, and she knew that Phantom would never abandon a mate. But she wasn't even sure these days if she was the same person she had once been. When you died and were reborn, were you still the same person you were before?
Not to mention the physical problems: sure, she could force herself to take a mare's body, a mare's shape, to look like her old self, but at the same time she knew that she wasn't. It hurt so terribly, because it was like wearing a mask, a disguise, and…
And if she kept thinking about this she was going to go insane. No, she needed to breathe. She needed to figure things out, yes, but she also had work to do, and she had responsibilities, and there were other ponies who needed to be taken care of.
Marina grasped the chair at the back of her desk, before she glanced up in surprise as there was a knock at the door. Her heart thudded in her chest, knowing who it had to be, and yet all the same her mind tried to deny it as she said in as steady a voice as she could: “Nevian, you don't have to worry about me, I'm... perfectly fine.”
There was silence, and then Marina blushed and lowered her head as the door was gently pushed open, and Phantom said quietly: “You don't have to pretend, you know.”
“I... I know. I just...” Marina smiled faintly over at Phantom, lowering her head a little as she blushed a bit. His beak quirked in maybe the smallest of smiles, and it encouraged her, the mare raising her head a little before she asked hesitantly: “How... how are you feeling?”
“I'm...” Phantom broke off and looked down for a moment, searching for the right words. Normally he was outspoken, brazen, and loud: he was bold and strong and fearless, and seeing him so hesitant, so nervous made her feel strange. And it made her worried.
After a few moments, the griffin looked up at her, and then he replied quietly: “I guess I don't really know, to be entirely honest.”
Marina nodded a little, lowering her head and biting her lip, and the griffin smiled briefly before he said softly: “I still love you-”
“I know.” Marina said, a little too quickly, and she blushed a bit when he smiled at her a little more. “I... I'm sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt. But I do know that, I've never doubted that. I suppose that's part of what scares me, though. If you're not happy, I don't want you to be... trapped with me.”
Marina glanced away, shifting silently. Part of her did want that, though: to be sure that she'd never lose him, to know that he would always return to her. She knew that, whether it was fair or not, part of what fascinated her so much about him was the fact that griffins mated for life, that he would never cheat on her, betray her, abandon her like so many others had.
She lowered her head, her mane falling over her eyes before she whispered: “Actually, I don't know if that's true or not. All I really know is that I love you and I don't want you to leave.”
“I know.” Phantom replied softly, hesitantly taking a step forward. He hated that all his movements were so slow, that it was so hard to think of the right things to say: but inside him, he felt like he'd been fighting a war against himself.
He might put on a strong face, but he felt as lost as Marina looked. What was he supposed to do, or say, in this kind of situation? He didn't know how to react, or how to tame all those warrior instincts inside of him: suddenly, all the things that had made him excel as a griffin warrior were turning against the mare he loved... and the only reason he would ever consider leaving her was to spare her the pain he was so afraid he might cause her.
But he loved her: more than anything else in the entire world, he loved her. He loved her more than he loved himself, more than he loved his homeland, more than he loved to fight. He loved her like he had loved no other, and never would love another.
That love warred with the hate inside him: his hatred for Changelings, creatures he had only ever thought of as monsters. He had been trained to hate them, and proven right in that hatred when they had cut his wings from his body. He had been trained to kill them, and killing them to him was like killing vermin: a dirty job, putting his claws in filth he'd rather not touch, but every Changeling he destroyed was another Equestrian life spared.
The Changelings had killed his wife. What bitter trick of Discord's was it that she had come back as one?
No, that wasn't fair, and he knew it wasn't fair. He knew he should be grateful. But all that anger and hate inside him was so hard to overcome: every time he looked at her, he didn't just see Marina anymore. He saw a Changeling, wearing the skin, the shape of his wife…
Both Marina and Phantom looked down for a moment, avoiding each other's eyes, before the griffin cleared his throat and forced his head to rise, looking silently at the mare before he said quietly: “I'm never going to leave you, Marina. I love you. I admire you. The problem isn't you...”
Phantom chuckled quietly, glancing down and feeling a faint thrum of shame as he realized how true that was. “The problem is me. The problem is... I forgot to remind you how important you are to me, and how much I love you. That I am here to protect you, that...”
Phantom struggled to find the words, rubbing at his face in an awkward, nervous gesture as Marina took a silent step towards him, the mare's eyes locked on the griffin before he continued quietly: “Marina, you are my soulmate, the person I chose to be with. I still look at you and see that person... no matter what body you have, no matter what happens to you, or how things change. I know that you're still you, that you haven't changed. I know that you're still who I think of every night when I go to sleep, and every morning when I first wake up.”
Marina smiled a little at this, and the griffin shifted a bit towards her before he said softly: “I want to work through this with you. I'm never going to leave you, and no matter what you look like, what you're shaped like, you're still my wife, and the love of my life. And I would be a fool to throw that all away over something as silly as this. Especially because... I know it's hurt you, too. So I want to work with you. I want you to remember, Marina, how much I love you and I want us both to remember that no matter what you look like, you are still you. You will always be you. And I will always love you.”
The chocolate mare trembled a little as the griffin reached up and gently stroked under her chin, guiding her head up, and without hesitation the mare almost leapt into his embrace, their mouths meeting in a passionate kiss for the first time in almost a month. Marina nestled into his chest, a few stray tears rolling down her cheeks as she pushed her face against the comfort of his feathers. She inhaled his scent as she clung to him, and felt his strong claws tenderly stroking along her back, keeping her held close, and tight, and safe. He massaged gently along her back, letting her know everything was going to be okay in that way only he could: without words, but only the touch of his claws, the embrace of his forelimbs, the soothing thud of his beating heart as she rested against the sanctuary of his breast.

Phantom gave a slight smile at this, studying the mare for a few moments before he simply nodded, and Marina blushed a little deeper before she leaned up.
