Over a thousand years ago, before Twilight Sparkle and the town of Ponyville, the land was changing. The Janissary was lurking along the border, the advance guard to an overwhelming force amassing in the desert of Saddle Arabia. Rumors of demigods in the Southern Periphery are whispered across the Empire; and to the east, sinister and powerful creatures terrorize the scattered Griffin tribes. At the center of the conflict is Mi Amore Sombra, son of the late Empress Amore, and Crown Prince of Crystallum, unaware of the perilous fate that would brand him a tyrant for future generations.

The King of Crystallum is a dark, epic fantasy series that takes place during the lifetime of Sombra, a character from the fourth-generation My Little Pony series. The Sombra Era is presented as a major period of conflict in pony history, where corruption, rebellion, and internecine warfare threaten the dwindling Crystal Empire and shift power to a young Equestria.

The series is presented in a nonlinear fashion, concerning events that happen earlier or later than their position in the series would suggest, and may include time periods already covered in previous titles.
