“I have no idea how magic works in this world….” The electrically charged woman weakly coughed up a mini rainbow and fell flat on her back. No one spoke for a few seconds until fluttershy broke the silence.
“Why not try yourself?...” She said barely above a whisper. Sunset glanced up at her surprisingly.
“Huh?..”
“I mean….why not try hooking yourself up to your machine?...” Rainbow Dash suddenly slapped her back.
“That’s an AWESOME idea Flutters!!” She looked at Sunset.
“If anything, you probably have more magic than we even do, considering you’re actually from Equestria, so hook up!”
Sunset looked a little nervous as she got up off the ground.
“I don’t know Dash, after that whole….thing at the fall formal, I’ve kind of made a deal with myself that I would never get involved with magic again….It’s just too…chaotic.”
“Oh forget about the Formal already Sunset, you’re a different person now, you aren’t wanting to use magic for evil purposes anymore, AND have you forgotten what happened at the Battle of the Bands? Like it or not, you’ve already gotten involved with magic since the Formal, so shut up about the whole thing, make like a hooker and hook up!"
“DASH!!” Rarity scolded.
“What? It’s punny…”
Everyone looked at Sunset, awaiting her answer.
“I don’t think it can hurt to try darling…I’m honestly curious myself as to what would happen.” Rarity said.
Sunset looked at the machine for a moment and sighed.
“Alright…Lets do this.” She started hooking herself up to the machine.
YAY!! Pinkie jumped.
Soon she was hooked up, and had her guitar at the ready.
“you guys ready?”
“YES!!” Came the unanimous reply.
Sunset hesitated.
“Just do it already!” Rainbow prodded.
Sunset took a deep breath, and started playing. Her tune started out slow and hesitant, like she was feeling. Her thoughts, against her will, went back to Equestria, and to her entrance exam into Celestia’s school for gifted unicorns, and how her exam had been to hatch a baby phoenix with her powers.
Sunset had always told people that she needed no friends… She needed to be tough, and in reality, she really did…Her dad died shortly after she had been born, her mom got sick when Sunset was a young age, and she had to take care of her mom, which was no easy feet…They were a poor family, and Sunset did whatever she had to do to get money for her mom…Whatever….she HAD to do…
When her mom did die though, she stopped doing those things…She was willing to do it so that her mom might have been able to live longer, but not for herself. She would find other ways to get by. And she did….barely. On the streets, she pushed people away and made herself look tough for the sake of being safe. But once she got into Celestia’s school, that all should have changed…But she had been living the lifestyle of pushing people away for too long, that it was just a habit to do it now.
But in truth, that little phoenix was the very first one in Sunset’s life to steal her heart. To be her friend…She loved that little phoenix dearly… That’s why she had given him the name “Philomena” which means “Greatly loved”. She remembered when she had become caught up with her curiosity of the mirror, and started spending less and less time with Philomena, until finally, she had gone through the portal…and left Philomena behind altogether…
Her thoughts then drifted to Celestia, how she had been like a mom to her, and how Sunset had left her behind. She thought of when she had come to this world, and of the first person who had tried to become friends with her, cared about her, and was the one who taught her how to play the guitar in the first place.
Her eyes teared up when she thought about how she had left him as well...pushed him away too, but she closed her eyes to prevent anyone from seeing her crying.
She thought about the fall formal and all that had transpired there. How she had finally been saved from herself, and the friends that she had finally gained. That was all she had ever really wanted in her life, was friends, someone who cared about her…but she had always denied herself of it. After she had lost her mom, she had always thought of herself as a failure, never good enough, she always had to be better than she was. She had become her own worst enemy.
‘Try harder, go faster, do better, Why are you such a failure??’ These were the thoughts that haunted her even as she surpassed her classmates greatly in Celestia’s school, and the same thoughts followed her into the human world and into Canterlot High. At every Fall Formal, she was the queen, but to herself, she was still a failure, nothing would bring her mom back.
Her thoughts went forward again, to the Battle of the bands, when people finally started giving her a second chance and she was making more and more friends. A hint of a smile came to her face.
Sunset by now, was so caught up in her thoughts, that unbeknownst to her, she started glowing and rising from the ground into the air, as the tempo and volume of her music increased.
Everyone watched her, eager to see what would happen next.
As her music continued in its ever increasing volume, rhythm, and mood, her friends jaws suddenly dropped as they witnessed what happened next.
Out of Sunset’s back and shoulder blades, were materializing what appeared to be a set of wings…This alone was strange since Sunset was a unicorn in Equestria. But even stranger was the fact that these didn’t appear to be any normal wings…but wings made of fire. Not the fire like at the Fall Formal, but, they almost resembled…The wings of a phoenix. And they were growing larger, and larger, while getting brighter and brighter with their flames. They grew to such a length that the flames started licking at the walls and ceiling. Everyone was too stunned to notice, but Rainbow found her voice.
“SUNSET!!” She shouted. “IT’S GOING TO START A F-” But just as she said that, an explosion of light lit up the room and knocked everyone to the floor. The fire wings had detached themselves from Sunset, and was now a full blown, giant phoenix, taking up the expanse of the entire large room. The creature lifted its head up, along with its wings, and gave an ear-piercing shriek, before falling forward and exploding into fire.
The entire room was ablaze.
“LET’S GET OUTTA HERE!!” Rainbow shouted. She tried turning the door handle, but the moment she touched it, she retracted it back. It was already hot to the touch. She kicked at the door multiple times, before it finally gave way and opened.
“FIRE!! THERE’S A FIRE!!!” They all yelled as they ran out. Doors started opening, as people gasped and saw the flames already in the hallway, and it was spreading fast. Soon, there was chaos in the hallways as people ran for the exit, abandoning everything they learned during fire drills, the flames eating away the walls and ceilings already.
Someone must have left something flammable in the school, because amidst the chaos and screaming to get out, Sunset suddenly heard an explosion far behind her down the hallway. People were screaming, and even though she knew she was risking getting knocked down and trampled on by the stampede of students running down the hallway, she chanced a look back…and wished she hadn’t.
People had caught on fire when the explosion happened, and were rolling on the ground trying to put it out. She knew she couldn’t go back.
The fire was too large and was spreading too fast, and if she did stop now, she was sure to get knocked down and trampled. But that wasn’t the end of it, suddenly another explosion went off in that vicinity, exploding more people into fire.
Sunset knew she had no choice. She turned around and kept running.
More people dying because of her, because she just HAD to get involved with magic again…Sunset didn’t know what kind of magic she possessed…But it wasn’t that of friendship…it couldn’t have been… how could the magic of friendship do something like this? This was more like the product of what she became at the Fall Formal…This was….
Chaotic.
