The Problem

The social conventions, the habits, the traditions, all of them have their origins in the time. From that which celebrate the day of your birth with a party to the most simple ones like say “hello” when a pony greets you. Know his origins allows us to learn the society in those times and what prompted that simple act to transcend the barriers of generations until the actuality and the future.

It’s for this networks of habits and traditions that some societies are differents from each others, even challenging his normality when in his own space is different, repudiable and in some cases, illegal.

Many kingdoms around the world wonder how Equestria goes against the rule of the mother nature, but the inhabitants of the pony kingdom don’t worry about that, just live.

Soon a purple alicorn, Princess of Friendship, will be the first pony in a very long time to ask, “Why?”

The door of the castle opened and closed resoundingly. Twilight leaned in the door, heavily breathing, she turned her head slightly in hope that she didn’t knock the door insistently. Thankfully, that don’t happen.

“What’s going on Twilight?” Spike asked.

“Is…” she said trying to catch his breath. “Lyra, again,”

“She asked you to a date again?”

Twilight nodded.

“She is very persistent. Why don’t you tell her the truth?” Suggested the dragon.

Twilight’s mind stopped to think about it.

“Are you insane?! You know what would happen if they find that out-”

“I didn’t mean that true, I was talking about the truth inside that truth,”

“Oh,” Twilight answered, ashamed. “But I already tried Spike, first subtly, then I told her directly that a I’m not interested at all. But she keep insisting,”

Twilight walked away from the door and sat down on her throne, resting her head on her hoof, tired of living the same routine almost daily. She wished to get out of his castle and yell to the sky the truth to avoid this kind of problems.
“Don’t forget that Rarity is coming to talk about the curtains in the castle,” Spike added, awakening Twilight from her trance. “You should talk to her about this, maybe Rarity can help you with Lyra,”

“Maybe I will, Spike, maybe. Wait, Where did you get that popcorn?”

“This? I found a cupboard of industrial space with hundreds of packages inside, you should take a look around the castle more often, maybe you’ll find something you like,” Said Spike taking his right claw to the mouth full of popcorns.

Spike walk out of the throne room leaving Twilight thoughtful, she never told anyone about the problem thinking that she can handle it on his own. A flash thought came to her mind.

“Spike, don’t eat all the popcorn or you’ll get sick!”

In the afternoon, Rarity came with a sample book of cloth with a red cover. Twilight was surprised to see that she only brought one with her, until she saw the other ten sample books behind the dressmaker.

“Those are the second option’s books if the main one doesn’t convince you. Now, let’s see what I can do for those windows of yours,” Rarity said cheerfull.

“I appreciate your visit Rarity, but it wasn’t necessary, Celestia gave me a list with royal decorators-”

“And lose the opportunity to help royalty to decorate her own castle? Who also turns out to be my best friend in the whole world? Darling, it’s like you don’t know me at all.”

With a giggle, both approached the first window near the entrance. Rarity took her tape measure and measured the frame while Twilight took a look into the necessary details of finding the perfect colour and cloth that combine and give the castle a fresh air of royalty and elegance, not forgetting the homely touch that Twilight wanted keep of his old house.

“Let’s see… by the color of the walls we should choose a light color that gives life to this place,”

Should I tell her?

“How about this white curtain with floral details?

She’s one of my friends, there’s nothing wrong with ask her

“Too common? What about this one aqua green?”

She will no suspect at all, this is something that friends do all the time, ask questions

“No? What about this?

But if she finds out and tells to the others? They won’t want to be my friends anymore!

For thirty minutes this continued, until Rarity closed the last sample book in front of Twilight with all the power of her magic, a gentle breeze along with noise awoke Twilight from her toughs.Rarity gave Twilight an upset look.

“Twilight, you rejected each and everyone one of my curtain models, I didn’t believe that you were so demanding like this,”

“Sorry, Rarity.”

“Is something wrong, darling?” Rarity asked, noticing her doubtful expression.

She is my friend.

“I don’t know how to say it Rarity but,” sighed, “there’s a pony-”

“Say no more, if you want to win the heart of that mare who doesn’t pay attention to you, Rarity the unicorn has the answer,” Expressed, taking her friend and dragging her to the exit. “When I finish with you, no mare in town will take her eyes off of you,”

An unpleasant image appeared in his mind.

“Wait Rarity!” Exclaimed undoing the gripping. “That’s not the problem,”

“So?”

“Well… since months there is a pony named Lyra, she follows me everywhere, she chases me, she… she,”

“Harasses you?”

“Exactly.”

The anxiety forced Twilight to walk in circles.

“And she will not leave me alone, I left it clear that I don’t want anything to do with her but she keep insisting and I don’t know what to do to make her understand.”

“I had never heard you talking about romantic problems Twilight,” Rarity said with a giggle. “I think I know what we can do to send a clear message to that Lyra. Follow me.”

They left the castle and started a search of the whole town. Rarity didn’t mention anything about the plan to Twilight, every time she asked, Rarity answered with a, “trust me”.

That only worried Twilight more, especially if that solution involved physical violence.

While they traveled Ponyville, Twilight was giving Rarity a description of the unicorn guilty of her problems. Occasionally, she turned to look around at all that couples that enjoyed the dates with her special someponies, each mare with her respective mare and each stallion with his stallion. As it should be, as it always has been.

“Hello, Sparkle,”

The voice bristled Twilight’s fur. They turned around and saw Lyra approach with provocative step.

“Who’s your friend?”

“I’m Rarity, glad to meet you,”

“Is a nice detail of you to introduce me to your friend, but is not my type, I prefer them more… intellectual,” Lyra said with a seductive tone and look.

“Excuse me, but it’s required a great mind to be a fashion designer, otherwise you attend to formal galas in the town ridiculously, not combining your fur with the colour of your dress like certain mare here present,”

“What did you say?!”

Both mares clashed heads, carried away by anger.

“Rarity, don’t forget what we came for,” Whispered Twilight.

The fashionista regained her composure and settled her mane.

“I did not come here to fight miss Lyra, I understand that for a long time now has been stalking Twilight,”

“I wouldn't say stalking, I prefer… insisting,” Lyra answered calmly.

“Whatever you want to call it, the point is that I’ve been letting this happen for too long thinking that you were going to stop, but I was forced to intervene,”

“And who are you to decide for her?” Lyra asked, annoyed.

“I’m her marefriend,”

Both Twilight and Lyra fell their muzzles at the same time. None of them expected this.

“H-her marefriend? You lie, I never see you together or anything!”

“My dear Twilight doesn’t like to show affection in public, also we prefer to hang out with our friends and spend time together,” Answered Rarity with a firm look.

“B-but… b-but… you never,”

“I see you’re persistent, forgive me Twilight, but she will not leave us alone until we show to her how much we love each other,” Proposed Rarity with an alluring look.

“What did you-”

Her confused thoughts worsened when, with a gentle touch behind her head, Rarity pulled Twilight into a chaste kiss. Her cheeks burned a scarlet tone and a surprised look took her face. Rarity kept her eyes closed, making sure that their lips stayed together as long as possible to make the message reach Lyra loud and clear.

After an eternity, they broke the kiss and Rarity turn to see Lyra, who seemed to be about to cry.

“Sorry about that, but you have to understand that what we have is something special and your constant nuisance is a pain in our horseshoe, darling,” Said Rarity with triumphant smile.

Twilight couldn’t process what just happened, the blush doesn’t disappear from her cheeks.

I can’t believe she kissed me… that means… oh no, this is bad. Poor Spike.

Without a word, Lyra ran away with tears in her eyes. Her best friend Bon Bon followed her.

“Well, it was not as expected, but desperate times require desperate measures. Now, about the kiss.”

But when she turned to talk Twilight, she was gone.

“Thanks for all your help Rarity, you’re such a great friend. There is nothing to be thankful for, darling, it’s always a pleasure,” Rarity said.

Like in the morning, Twilight entered the castle and closed the door resoundingly with heavy breathing, unable to forget what happened a couple of minutes ago. At least she can sneak away without Rarity noticing.

“How could this have happened? She is my friend, I don’t think Rarity kissed me unless she wants something with me, maybe she took advantage of my problem to do her great move. Oh Celestia, what I going to do now?” She asked herself.

She lay on the floor and covered her face with her hooves without realizing that someone heard everything she said.

“You and Rarity? Kissed?”

A shiver ran through her body when she realized she said it all aloud and anyone could of heard it, specially a little dragon. Twilight raised her head and saw her number one assistant with tears flooding his face.

“H-how could y-you?”

Spike drop his popcorn and ran to his bedroom. Twilight didn’t lose a second and quickened his step to catch him and explain what happened.

Spike entered his bedroom and locked the door. Twilight knock the door repeatedly.

“Open the door Spike, we need to talk,”

“No! I thought we were friends, friends never kiss the pony that your friend has a crush on!”

“You’re right, but it was Rarity’s plan to help me with Lyra, everything was improvised and took me by surprise. And I don’t like it, you know why, even I’m confused because if she likes me I will hurt the feelings of both of you and I’m afraid Spike… afraid of what might happen,”

Twilight was sharing her fears with Spike, fears that since her teenage years she had carried with her.

Fortunately, her fascination with books and learning new stuff dissuade her attention. She thought, naive, that when she was older she can handle them with no problems.

Now, all is worst than ever.

“Forgive me Spike. Open the door please,” Twilight begged, touching the door with her hoof and laying her head.

Suddenly the door opened and Spike jumped to Twilight, hugging her. They remained that way for a while, releasing sadness on the other’s shoulder. The reality enclosed them in a jail with walls and bars invisible that separated them from the rest.

“Why does it hurt so much?” Why I can’t be with her?” Asked Spike tearfully.

After the incident with Nightmare Moon, Twilight and Spike had a talk about his crush on Rarity, explaining why it could not be, obviously he became sad for a moment but that didn’t stop him from going carrusel boutique and helping her. When Spike told Pinkie about his crush they had another talk, when his greed came up they had another.

Talks, talk and talks. No one provide a real solution, like the scar left by a wound.

“We already talked about this, Spike. You have to get used and accept that ponies disagree with this, I don’t want to imagine what I’ll do if something happen to you. It’s for your own sake, Spike,” Twilight answered sadly.

“Why?” Spiked asked.

“What did you say?”

“Why?!” Spike yelled before continue crying.

Why is for his own sake? Why accept it? Why get used? Why conform? Why can’t he be with her?

That questions reminded in Twilight’s mind all the moment they held each other. She never knew the true answer, the only one that matters. She needs to find out if she wanted to comfort Spike and herself, but for now, she has another business to take care about, the monthly sleepover at Pinkie’s house.
