Frost Vortex: An Alicorn's Backstoryby Frost VortexChaptersChapter 1Chapter 2Chapter 3Chapter 1Several years ago, in the prosperous land of Equestria, life there in its lush and beautiful terrain was simply like no other. Princess Twilight Sparkle, who took on the role of solely ruling Equestria after the other princesses' deaths, watched over the races who inhabited the land. With the help of her Royal Council - which consisted of her old friends from the days before her reign - she ensured that nothing would ever threaten the friendship, love, and unity that enveloped Equestria. Ponyville, where Princess Twilight had once resided in herself, had been promoted from an ordinary town to one of the central hearts of Equestria. At the end of every year, she'd visit Ponyville and see for herself how her old town had evolved from a once poor town to a blooming city. It was only a week before Princess Twilight Sparkle's visit, and Frost Vortex couldn't be any more excited. Frost Vortex, at the time, was simply an ordinary unicorn filly devoid of her cutie mark. The sky blue filly was an introvert, speaking only when spoken to about an important matter; some could even describe her as self-conscious and sensitive. On the other hoof, Frost Vortex was also exceptionally interested in books, her inspiration being Princess Twilight. "And then, I finished this book called The Beast Chronicles," Frost Vortex blabbered to her father, who was blatantly uninvolved in the conversation regarding his daughter's school day, as they trotted along the cement path that led to their cozy house. Frost Vortex, completely oblivious of her father's disinterest, however, was talking the entire way. "It's this book in which a pony - Hazel Rain, to be exact - gets mutated into this ugly beast and she has to survive fourteen frightening days of being hunted by the Overseers." As soon as they approached their house, her father sighed in relief, which immediately raised suspicion inside Frost Vortex. Entering the spacious home, the gray stallion trotted upstairs, avoiding his daughter. "Mom won't be back until late evening," Frost Vortex sighed, anxiously pacing back and forth by the oakwood door. It was then that she suddenly heard the sound of a party whistle from behind the door. Tilting her head questioningly, she slowly turned the doorknob and gradually opened it. Her ice blue eyes took a few moments to adjust to the bright sunlight outside before she finally noticed a rather familiar poofy-maned pink mare standing nearby. "Alright then, ponies!" Pinkie Pie called out, catching the attention of several other ponies. "This parade's got to be perfect, or super duper awesome enough for Twilight! Oh, um, I mean Princess Twilight!" Murmurs spread throughout the crowd that had gathered around her, mostly ones of surprise at seeing such a royal pony - to be specific, one of the Royal Council - among them normal Ponyville citizens. Frost Vortex, who had unconsciously moved to stand on the front porch, gasped in pure fan love at the mention of Princess Twilight. "Mares, I need you to gather all the cool parade supplies you have here. Stallions, I need you to all wait here for Fluttershy so she can give you your orders when she arrives," Pinkie Pie continued, her loud voice filling the entire area. "We'll need all the ponies we can get to help out! I just can't wait to see the look on Twilight's face when she sees we've organized such a huge parade for her visit, which means that you're all not to speak a word of this outside of Ponyville! Okie dokie lokie?" Frost Vortex's eyes widened as she forced her way into the crowd, hopping up and down in order to get a view of the famous party mare behind several ponies that blocked her view. Come on! she thought desperately as her attempts continuously failed. Moments after Pinkie Pie had given her orders, the crowd immediately decreased, mares darting out in every direction. Frost Vortex lost her sense of direction as she began turning and tripping every second due to the sudden rush of ponies. Seriously? The young filly's ears drooped in embarassment as she noticed that she was the only female pony left in the crowd; however, not many stallions noticed her due to her small size. An idea coming to her mind, she slipped out of the crowd, panting heavily. This is my chance to learn more about Princess Twilight! Frost Vortex thought, her excited gaze quickly singling Pinkie Pie out. She was at the very edge of the crowd, chatting cheerfully with some stallions. Frost grinned and casually trotted over to the pink mare, her idea fresh in her mind. By the time she approached her, Pinkie was no longer occupied, but looking away in the direction of Sugarcube Corner with a distant look in her eyes. Inhaling deeply, Frost summoned all of her courage and approached Pinkie Pie, the sound of her hoofsteps catching the pink mare's attention. "I-I'm Frost Vortex-" the sky blue filly began, clearly anxious. "Oh, hi Pinkie Pie," the gentle voice that could only belong to Fluttershy interrupted unknowingly, immediately taking Pinkie's attention away from the filly. In a matter of seconds, the two ponies began a conversation regarding the upcoming parade. Frost lowered her head, her thoughts clouded with despair at how easily Pinkie's attention had been snatched from her to Fluttershy instead. She stood there, heartbroken, as she watched the two ponies talk cheerfully. Don't they realize how much of an inspiration they are to fillies like me? Sighing heavily, she began to trot away with her tail dragging limply behind her. Chapter 2"Hey!" Pinkie Pie called out, her head snapping in Frost Vortex's direction. "Where are you going, little filly?" Frost Vortex whirled around to see Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie, their attention all directed to her instead of the conversation they'd just been having. Lowering her head, she slowly approached them. "I'm not going to let you leave like that, silly!" Pinkie said, flashing her a huge grin. "Nopony frowns in front of me, so what's the difference with you?" "R-Really?" Frost Vortex stammered, raising her head to meet their warm gazes. "B-But, isn't the parade more... i-important than a filly like m-me?" "Yes, but we have plenty of time before her visit," Fluttershy responded, laying a comforting hoof on Frost Vortex's shoulder. "A week to be exact, so there's no harm done in chatting with you first, is there? Besides, you look like you need one pretty badly." Frost Vortex blushed, her eyes glowing with excitement. Then, she began bombarding the two mares. "I-I have so many questions! Like, how is everyday life in Canterlot? Or with Princess Twilight? Is she busy often with Equestrian matters?" Pinkie Pie laughed. "You remind me so much of bookish Twilight before her reign, not to mention before she met us." "Really?" Frost Vortex exclaimed, her excitement growing. "So, maybe, one day I can become a princess like Twilight? Oh... that would be so spectactular!" "I think I recognize you from last year," Fluttershy chuckled, her thoughts wandering to the previous year. Frost Vortex's excitement immediately ceased as she began to remember what had happened the last time Princess Twilight visited Ponyville. Princess Twilight, dressed in a beautiful silk gown, was strolling down a long red carpet that was spread across the town, her Royal Council trailing behind her as Princess Twilight waved to the crowd that had gathered on either side of the carpet. Frost Vortex had managed to get a close look at the Princess due to her mother carrying her on her back, her eyes widening as her idol - the Princess she'd admired since her birth - neared the sky blue filly. However, her excitement had got her in big trouble. As soon as Princess Twilight had waved directly at her, Frost Vortex squirmed in excitement, losing her balance and began to fall. Gasping, Princess Twilight - thanks to her quick reflexes - used her magic to lift the filly up just in time. She then took back her magic just as she positioned Frost Vortex near the ground, allowing her to land softly on her hooves. "Careful," Princess Twilight said in a sweet tone, chuckling softly. Frost Vortex's mouth dropped open in disbelief as her mother pulled her back into the crowd. She had just been saved by her own hero in front of everypony! Ever since then, Frost Vortex had invested even more time into trying to get closer to Princess Twilight... even though it sounded like a complete joke to other fillies. "Hello, anypony in there?" Pinkie's voice snapped Frost Vortex out of her flashback as she blinked to see the pink mare waving a frantic hoof in front of her face. "Are you okay? You just blanked out for a few minutes, you know. Like, went totally unresponsive no matter what we did." "S-Sorry..." Frost Vortex said, embarrassed. "I was just remembering what happened last year; it was a really embarassing, yet memorable moment, i-if you know what I-I mean." Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie exchanged knowing smiles with one another before turning back to Frost Vortex. "You seem like a really nice filly, um...?" Fluttershy tilted her head curiously. Frost Vortex chuckled nervously. "Sorry, I was so caught up in the excitement of meeting you two that I forgot to introduce myself properly! I'm Frost Vortex, it was really nice meeting you two." Pinkie Pie smiled and forcefully shook Frost Vortex's hoof with her own. "I'm Pinkie Pie! Although you probably already know who I am, you know, being Twilight's friend and all." Fluttershy nodded in agreement. "We really don't like to boast about our Royal Council status and how good our relationship is with Princess Twilight." "W-Well, it's not all about that," the sky blue filly offered them a smile. "Pinkie Pie, you're a great party host! You're a legend for bringing smiles to Ponyville when ponies need them! A-And Fluttershy, you're one of the best animal caretakers Equestria has ever seen! Nopony's as good as you when it comes to wild animals!" "Thanks," Fluttershy said shyly before her eyes suddenly widened in realization. "I have to prepare my birds for singing the Equestrian Anthem at the parade!" Before Frost Vortex could say goodbye, Fluttershy unfolded her wings and took off. "Oh, I guess..." Frost Vortex paused for a brief moment before continuing, "I-I'll go now... bye, Pinkie Pie." Pinkie grinned. "Okay! See you later, Frost Vortex!" Chapter 3Frost Vortex groaned. It was only the second day of the week, which meant that there were still four days left before Princess Twilight's visit. And she, being the unfortunate filly she was, had to spend those remaining days at school. Even though she did enjoy school very much, the desperation of meeting the Princess personally had ruined that positive attitude. She glanced to her right, where Coal, a black colt with emerald eyes sat staring at the clock impatiently. He had developed a rather infamous reputation for refusing to listen in class; in fact, all he did all day was stare at the clock. Frost Vortex, however, didn't care for him or his reputation much. Throughout the school year, he had been a unrelenting bully, teasing Frost Vortex about her not having gained her cutie mark yet. On the other hoof, Coal had been the first one in class to get his cutie mark: a pickaxe digging up coal since his family owned an entire mining area. "Time will pass, Coal," Ms. Orchid, their teacher, said as she once again noticed the foal's behavior like every other day. Coal inhaled sharply as he crossed his forelegs, finally directing his gaze away from the clock. "Now then, class, listen up! Today, we will be going on a field trip to the world-famous Canterlot sculpture garden. Once we get to Canterlot, I will split you into pairs so you can explore the garden yourselves." Excited murmurs arose in the classroom; even Frost Vertex perked up since she knew that Princess Twilight lived in the royal castle at Canterlot. I could visit her during the field trip! Oh, this'll be so much fun! Hopping up and down with glee, Frost Vortex immediately stopped when she realized that all of her classmates, including Ms. Orchid, were staring at her. "Oh, um, sorry," Frost Vortex apologized, chuckling nervously. The class soon arrived at their destination after a short train ride: the famous Canterlot sculpture garden. Not wasting any time, Ms. Orchid led them to a nearby statue, explaining to the class that the statue represented victory itself. "Victory? How cool!" a nearby hazel filly squeaked, her bright orange eyes wide with admiration. "Of course, Ember Dawn. It's Victory after all." Ms. Orchid gave her a small smile. "Whatever," Ruby Jade scoffed, her tone irritated. "Who gives a flying feather about a bunch of old statues that'll crumble in no time?" Frost Vortex shot her a hostile glance, clearly angered by her words. "These aren't just any regular statues, Ruby Jade! They all hold meaning, you know!" "Yeah, they totally hold meaning in the form of stone," the scarlet filly retorted sarcastically. "I don't see what the big deal is, Frost Vortex. Maybe you'd know since you're a total loser... but no one cares anyway." Frost Vortex rolled her eyes at Ruby Jade as the class began moving on, led by Ms. Orchid who continued to occasionally point out the statues that they passed by. "Now, I know it must be burdensome for you children for not being able to view these statues at your own pace," Ms. Orchid said, stopping as they approached the end of the garden and turning around to face the class. "Therefore, everypony will be split into groups of two with you being free to choose your own partner." The class murmured in excitement as they began choosing their desired partners. Frost Vortex, being the introvert she was, sadly didn't have any friends that would pick her immediately. As a result, she was left with the only available option left: Coal. "You'll be free to explore the garden however you want, class; just make sure to stay with your partner all the time and come back here in about an hour." Immediately after their teacher had given them instructions, the gathered ponies before her dissolved as partners raced in every direction, eager to begin exploring. Frost Vortex and Coal were the last ones to leave. Groups of two? That's bad already, but... I'm with Coal? This is definitely not going like I planned so far! Frost Vortex groaned, facehoofing. "It'll be all over soon," Coal muttered under his breath, shooting a glance at Frost Vortex before trotting off. "Where are you going?" Frost Vortex demanded harshly, following him as he aimlessly roamed the garden. Coal ignored Frost Vortex as he continued to loiter around on his own, showing little-to-no interest in the stone statues around them. Rolling her eyes in irritation, Frost Vortex occasionally stopped to look around by herself instead. Maybe I can sneak a peek into the castle, she thought as she glanced at Coal. Satisfied that he wasn't focusing on her - or anything, at that case - she quickly took off in the direction of the royal castle.
