Commence Rescue Operations!

Previous Chapter

(Torian`s POV)

After the sun set over the ocean and the stars and moon was full providing a beautiful night, Me and Minuette departed from each other a few hours ago and went to our separate rooms for the night ahead. As I was about to slip out of my Captains uniform for it was the end of my shift, I heard a knocking at my quarters door.

"Come in." I said as the door open to reveal my First Officer. " Sir, Wireless Operators have picked up an urgent SOS message from the Trotterdam 5 miles East of us." He informed as I got the sense of fear inside me as I put on my hat and replied. "Prepare the engines and helmspony for change of course." I ordered in a commanding tone as he saluted and headed for the Bridge.

As the Warrior steamed toward Haywaii in the brisk night, I looked to see a light in the distance and it was bright to see it, but looking through my binoculars, It was worse than I could`ve imagined; The Trotterdam was ablaze from the stern and seemed to be sinking. I immediately took action and did not wish to leave any surviving pony out there.

"Alright, Helmspony, take us 45 degrees to starboard, Ocean Crest and Lake Zest, Get the mail nets, blankets, and some warm refreshments ready. And Chief Officer, Make sure we have some room to raise any boats that may have been launched." With all the officers assigned their duties, they saluted as the Helmspony changed our course as I looked the sinking Trotterdam. Then a violent explosion ruptured on the burning ship with a loud bang that could be heard from where we were.

As we came close, I blew the ship`s whistles to assure the survivors rescue had arrived and slowed the engines down. The lifeboats rowed toward the mail door and climbed up the ladder or cargo net. But I felt there are more survivors out there and wanting to help, I then ordered my 3 best officers to come with me for a rescue operation to save anyone that are still in the water.

After hopping in the boat, the four of us began rowing back to the disaster area and searched for survivors in the water. Ocean Crest used his horn as a light to see the survivors clearly. But it was quiet with a few screams in the distance and as we rowed to where the ship foundered, mass bodies of ponies littered the area with a few deck chairs and other debris used as make-shift float devices. Majority suffered from Hypothermia and froze to death in the sea others were badly burned by the fire and/or explosion.

"Hello! Can anypony hear me?" I called out and then saw a stallion on a wooden door with a few stands of ice in his mane and looking rather cold. "H-Help, pleeeeeassseeee." He said shivering almost violently.

"Come on bring him in and wrap him in blankets. Keep him warm." I said as the officers helped to pull in the stallion and tried to keep him warm. We continued our search efforts for an hour when the sun began to rise over the horizon, We collected another 20 ponies who clung onto bare life and rowed back to the Warrior.

After getting the survivors on deck and the lifeboats on deck, I gave the order to activate the engines once more toward Haywaii. Then my Chief Officer came by with a clipboard. "Captain, From the passengers and crew of he Trotterdam, We have rescued 675 ponies of the 1,200 aboard before the sinking." My heart dropped to hear that a little over half the ponies aboard were killed.

"Thank You for the report." I replied solemnly as the Warrior sped at 20 knots toward Haywaii. The Trotterdam survivors aboard huddled together on the Forecastle deck wrapped in blankets and sipping their hot chocolate to warm themselves up. I felt as if I had to send a message to the Princesses of the incident and walked toward the Wireless Operator room.

"Harold, I need a message ASAP!" I said as Harold got on the line waiting for what to send. "Dear Princesses Celetia and Luna, I regret to inform of an incident involving the Trotterdam having to be sunk by an explosion. The Warrior was able to respond and rescue survivors, but only a little more than half the people aboard the ship. Please meet me in Haywaii if you can. Sincerely Captain Torian Scotterian"

After the message was sent, I thanked Harold and left back to the Bridge to check upon the crew. I did have sorrow to families who will be forever altered and I wished I could have done more.
