New Lives

Soarin had never been as petrified in his entire life as he was at this moment. Standing outside the door to the delivery room, he cringed as he heard his wife screaming inside. She had been in labour for over 12 hours, with no end in sight, and never in his life had Soarin felt so useless. As the young stallion stood there, he wondered how his life had changed so quickly in space of the past year. Oh yeah; he'd been forced into an arranged marriage.

Just over a year before, Flash and Twilight were the only ones married happily, in both friend groups; Fluttershy and Big Mac had been going out for two years, while Soarin, Spike, and Sharp Shot had been left in the dust. As were Rarity, Applejack, and Rainbow Dash. That was until Soarin's parents and Rainbow's parents decided to step in.

At the beginning of the previous year, Soarin had turned 22 and Rainbow had turned 21; and with Twilight happily married to Flash, and Fluttershy dating Big Mac, Soarin's mom and dad had realized that he had to get married at some point, and he was never going to do it himself. It was in this realization that they had decided to find out who Soarin's crush was, mistakingly reading his personal journal.

His crush was a mare named Rainbow Dash, 1 year younger than him, had a rainbow colored mane and a cyan colored coat. In Soarin's journal it had mentioned that she went to the Wonderbolts academy, and part of the reserves. His parents tracked Rainbow's down and talked over the arrangement, in which they both agreed on. Both parties seemed extremely happy, and gave it a shot.

Their first meeting hadn't been smooth sailing though. The day that Soarin and Rainbow first meet; actually talked to each other in private, he made a crucial mistake; he upset his wife-to-be. The day was going smoothly until a drunk Spitfire came upon them and started to flirt with Soarin. That of course, upset Rainbow. Soarin realized this marriage was only going to work out if his friends and fellow wonderbolts wouldn't drop in on them all the time, much less be drunk. Yeah that was defiantly not going to happen.

After this meeting, Soarin made an attempt to apologize, and, given the circumstances of Spit Fire being drunk, Rainbow accepted his apology. With both sides happy once more, Soarin and Rainbow's relationship grew.

The pair were married 3 months after their first meeting, and had quickly settled into married life. Both Tank, and Soarin's falcon, Torpedo, got along quite well with each other and their owners other half. Living in the same house brought the pair closer, way closer than before, making their love for one another stronger. Just when their relationship couldn't get any better, Rainbow discovered she was pregnant.

The couple had only been married 3 months by this time, and were quite surprised. They hadn't planned on having a child so early, and were quite anxious on the new development. Lucky for Rainbow, though, Twilight was still pregnant with Starry at this time, and her and Flash were always on hand to quell the couples fears, even after Starry was born five months before. Now, only eleven months into their nuptials, Rainbow had gone into labour around 8pm the previous night. 12 hours later, the young mare was still in labour, with no end in sight, making Soarin more anxious than he'd ever been in his life.

Soarin was snapped out of his thoughts when Big Macs' voice came to his attention.

"Hey Soarin, why aren't you inside?" Big Mac asked anxiously as he and Fluttershy came over to the father-to-be. "Isn't Rainbow still in labour?"

Soarin sighed and leant back onto the wall of the delivery room. "It's been twelve hours and counting," Soarin confirmed nervously as he looked up towards the ceiling of the hall way with a sigh. "She kept screaming at me, so I thought it was best to leave."

"She's having a baby, of course she'd be screaming," Fluttershy said calmly, before the three of them winced as they heard Rainbow give out the worst scream yet, making Soarin moan anxiously and Fluttershy shudder.

"How long is this going to go on for?!" he moaned restlessly. I can't stand hearing her scream much longer."

"What's going on? And what are you complaining about Soarin?" asked Flash in confusion, as he and Twilight joined them with five month old Starry sitting on Flash's back, his wings keeping her in place. Soarin frowned, he thought he had sent a letter or pony to get them, oh well. They didn't know that Rainbow had gone into the night before.

"Rainbow went into labour last night, and she's still going," Soarin explained to them, just as Rainbow's sudden scream confirmed this, making Soarin cringe once again.

Flash looked at him in amazement. "If Rainbow's in labour, why in the name of Celestia aren't you inside with her?!" Flash exclaimed angrily, while Twilight gave Soarin an irate look. "Yeah Soarin, why aren't you?" Twilight asked calmly.

"She doesn't want me in there!" Soarin exclaimed angrily with a heated look towards the prince. "Every time I go back in there, she just screams at me to go away! What am I supposed to do?"

Everyone looked at Soarin in disbelief, including Rarity, Pinkie Pie, and Applejack whom had just joined them, all knowing that this was the wrong way to approach this situation.

"Soarin, Rainbow is in the worst pain she'll ever be in her whole life! Of course she would scream at you!" Twilight said angrily, yet gently at the same time. "Do you think Flash got away with not being yelled at when I had Starry?"

"I got yelled, sworn, and glared at for hours. Not to mention the death threats she threw at me and being screamed at to leave her alone, yet I still stayed. How could I not when Twilight was in that much pain?" Flash said in exasperation.

"Rainbow would actually try to kill me, never mind threaten!" Soarin countered. "I mean, you have seen her angry haven't you?" Soarin asked Flash and Twilight as he turned towards them.

"She might if ya don't get back in there! Your supposed to be er husband, now act like it!" exclaimed Applejack angrily, Twilight, Rarity, Pinkie, and Fluttershy nodding in agreement.

"She won't do anythin' of tha sort, now get your flank movin an into that there room," Big Mac said calmly. "No matter what she says, she'll want you to be there. Heck," he looked over at Fluttershy with a smile, "I'd stay with Flutters, no matter what she said," making Fluttershy blush.

"Um, please keep me out of this; and you know that we won't be having foals anytime soon," said Fluttershy calmly, backing away from the group.

"Ah know Fluttershy, I know, I was jus' sayin," Big Mac said with a chuckle before he gave her a quick kiss on the cheek, making her blush, just as everyone wince once more as another scream came from the room.

"For Celestia's sake, Soarin, just go in there already!" Flash yelled in desperation, as he pleaded with his friend to finally join his wife.

Soarin opened his mouth to respond, but not before the angry voice of his exhausted wife was suddenly heard from the room behind them.

"SOARIN, BY THE LOVE OF CELESTIA, GET YOUR ARSE UP HERE ALREADY! I AM NOT DOING THIS WITHOUT YOU!" Rainbow screamed from the room behind them, and Soarin blanched and raced back inside to join his wife at last, not able to stay away from her any longer, despite her earlier screams at him; causing the rest of the group to burst into fits of laughter as Soarin ran inside the room.

"Well finally, it's about time he went in. I just hope Rainbow is doing ok," said Rarity, finally joining the conversation.

"You said it Rarity!" Pinkie agreed, nodding her head up and down.

"Oh I really hope the baby gets here soon, for Rainbow's sake. I don't think she or Soarin will be able to handle this much longer," said Twilight worriedly as she and the others decided to sit down to wait for news.

Flash and the others weren't the only ones hoping this. Inside the room, Soarin came rushing over to his wife, who was fairly flushed in the face and looked completely weary, yet determined. When she saw Soarin rush in, she gave him a wide smile, looking totally relieved to have her husband back beside her; and Soarin in relief that she wasn't yelling at him.

"How's it going? Are we any closer?" Soarin asked the nurse, Redheart was her name, anxiously, as well as Rainbow's mother, Blue blitz. Seeing the anxious look on the young stallions face, Redheart smiled and nodded.

"Almost there dearie, I promise. It's about to get a whole lot worse though," Redheart said calmly, making Soarin groan. Hearing this, Rainbow looked over at him with a desperate look as she grabbed hold of his hoof.

"Your not leaving again," she told him. "I refuse to do this without you!"

With a reassured smile, Soarin gripped his wife's hoof. "I'm not going anywhere I promise," he assured her kindly. "Besides, even if I did, I think either you or Flash would kill me. You should have seen him just then," said Soarin with a shudder, making Rainbow laugh just as another pain shot through her abdomen. Grimacing in pain, she squeezed Soarin's hoof so tight it went purple, making him wince in turn.

"Oh, something tells me it's almost time," Redheart said quickly and started to prepare herself. "Get ready dearie."

Looking at Soarin with wide eyes, he smiled at her. "You've done it this long, Rainbow," Soarin reminded her. "You can handle it. All while screaming at me," he added with a grin towards her which she returned, before her face turned serious. All of a sudden calm, Rainbow took a deep breath and nodded as she began the final stages.

It wasn't until an hour after Soarin had raced back inside the delivery room to be with his wife that Flash and the others heard the cries of a baby, making them all look at each other excitedly.

"Soarin and Rainbow are finally parents," Flash grinned, making them all sigh in relief. It had been a long wait, for all of them, as well as Soarin and Rainbow. Fifteen hours all up.

"Hmm, I wonder, is it a colt or a filly?" Rarity asked in excitement.

"OOH OOH A GUESSING GAME! I think it's a FILLY!" Pinkie pie exclaimed, hopping up and down.

"It might be sugarcube, but knowing Soarin, he probably wants a colt. I dunno how he would take it if he gets a filly," Applejack interjected.

"There's nothing wrong with havin' a lil filly," Big Mac said with a frown. "Mares can do everythin' a stallion could do."

"It really doesn't matter, does it? They'll be happy either way right?" Fluttershy said calmly.

Before anyone could respond to that, they heard the door open with a bang, and they saw an elated looking Soarin racing out the door; a wide grin on his muzzle.

"IT'S A COLT! RAINBOW AND I HAVE A COLT!" he yelled in excitement.

"That ought to make him happy," Applejack muttered to Pinkie, who grinned at her in turn as they turned to Soarin, beaming joyfully at him.

"Congrats Soarin. To both of you," Flash smiled. "How's Rainbow?"

"She's fine, thank Celestia," Soarin replied with a goofy grin. "Exhausted, but she and the baby are fine. Rainbow wants you all to come at say hi to him," Soarin said proudly.

"Is she sure?" Twilight asked him, surprised as everyone began to chatter excitedly. "She just had a baby, does she really want us in there?"

"I asked, she insisted on you coming in," Soarin shrugged. "And I am in no mood to argue with her after all of that, that's for sure," he added with a contentedly chuckle. Twilight shrugged and followed Soarin into the delivery room along with everyone else.

"Hey guys," Rainbow said, looking up from the small bundle she held in her hooves towards the small crowd of ponies.

"Hi Rainbow, how ya feelin?" Pinkie asked in response.

"Exhausted, but I'm ok," she said. "It was totally worth!"

"Congrats Rainbow," Rarity, Applejack, Twilight, and Fluttershy said in unison, as if they planned it all. The others nodded in agreement.

"Heh, thanks guys,"

"What's his name?" Flash asked eagerly.

Soarin laughed. "I wanted to name him, but Rainbow wouldn't let me," he said, as Rainbow gave him an increduluos look.

"You wanted to name him Soarin Junior, of course I said no!" Rainbow exclaimed with a giggle. "I love you, but that's not happening!" she added with a glance to him, which made everyone laugh.

"Thanks Dashie, I feel the love," said Soarin dryly.

"So, what did ya name the lil fella?" asked Big mac curiously and Rainbow and Soarin looked at everyone with proud smiles.

"Gusty. Our son's name is Gusty Soarin Dash," Rainbow announced proudly.
