The Terrible Twos

Previous ChapterNext Chapter

"Doggy, wanna doggy!"

Twilight sighed in frustration. She thought when her daughter began to talk that things would be so much easier; but combine talking with the terrible twos, and you get this perfect storm of annoyance. Most of the time, Starry being able to communicate with her parents was 'easy', as well as cute; unless the conversation involved dogs that is.

Ever since Starry had learnt to say 'dog', she had begun to pester her parents for one of her own. She had been around dogs since the day she was born, and because of this, the little filly believed she ought to be allowed one of her own. Even if she was only 2 years old, and had never even played with a dog, since Twilight didn't want her to get hurt, let alone own one.

Today was one such day. Flash had gone out early that morning for a military meeting, and had left Twilight alone with the toddler. The day had started well enough with Starry helping her mummy and Owlicious clean up the throne room, playing with her favourite doggy doll. After a while, though, Starry had spotted another filly playing with a small dog outside through the window, and the storm began to brew. At first it started with Twilight hearing Starry mumbling about dogs but it quickly progressed all the way to Starry's yelling, even making Owlicious wince. Nothing she did made Starry stop screaming, and a dog of her own was out of the question; she was only 2, after all.

"Doggy, wanna doggy. WANNA DOGGY!" Starry screamed repeatedly and Twilight sighed again. This was getting out of hand, and her tantrum was growing; she had to put a stop to it.

"Starry, you can scream all you want, but you are NOT getting a dog. I mean it young lady," Twilight said firmly, making Starry pout angrily.

"Wanna a doggy!" the toddler yelled.

Twilight frowned. "Starry, stop it," she told the two year old sternly, standing firmly in front of her, "this isn't going to get you a dog. Do you want me to get daddy?" Twilight asked the little filly as her face began to turn red with anger.

"What are you getting me for?" Flash's voice came from behind, causing Twilight to start and wheel around to see Flash and Pepper walking through the doorway, making her sigh in relief.

Looking from his now-relieved wife, to his pouting daughter, Flash groaned. "Not again," he said with a sigh. "How long has it gone on for this time?" Flash asked knowingly. Starry had these temper tantrums often enough to know one in progress.

"Longer than usual that's for sure," Twilight told him tiredly. "I swear, if I hear the word dog one more time, I'm going to lose it!" Closing her eyes in frustration, Twilight took a deep breath, before re-opening her eyes. "Look," she continued, with a pleading expression towards her husband, "I don't know what's gotten into her today, but I really need a break, so do you think you could take her outside for a while? Maybe..." she added as the toddler began to repeat the word dog once again.

"I'll take her for a walk around the town for awhile." Giving his wife a sympathetic smile, Flash kissed her forehead gently. "Give you a break," Flash said gently, allowing Twilight to smile gratefully at him.

"Thank you!" Twilight exclaimed gratefully as she gave him a quick kiss on the cheek, before giving him a pleading look. "Just do me a favor though," she told him, a look of desperation on her face, "just...try to stop her tantrum. Please. I mean, I usually can...but-"

Flash snorted. "I make no promises there," he said, "but," he added quickly seeing the desperate look of his wife's face, "I'll do my best," he promised her softly as he kissed her lightly on the lips, before turning his attention to his still pouting little filly.

"Starry, do you want to come with me for a little while?" Flash asked her kindly.

Starry looked at her daddy with an uncertain look on her face. "Peppy come?" she asked slowly, turning her attention over to the Germane Shepherd (I KNOW IT HURTS!!) in the corner, who gave her a gummy grin.

Flash chuckled. "Yes, Pepper can come," he assured her with a smile. "Now, come one then, let's go for a walk." Holding out his hoof for the toddler, Starry quickly took hold of it, before walking out the main door of the castle.

Leading his daughter outside, Flash tried to keep hold of her hoof as best he could, which was a difficult thing to do because you kinda needed all of your hooves to walk. She lead the way, kicking at any sticks and twigs in the road.

"Well bud, it looks like I've got her back to herself," Flash told the dog hopefully, leading Pepper to coo cautiously. She'd seen the little filly get mad at the drop of a hat, and wasn't going to accept victory just yet.

For good reason too; because at that moment, Starry looked up from the sticks on the ground and noticed the same little filly with her dog. Noticing this at the same time as his daughter, Flash tensed, justing waiting for her temper to flare up again.

"Come on, Starry, let's go to the forge," Flash suggested hopefully, wrapping his wing around his daughter and leading her away. "I think Sharp Shot want to show you something."

Ordinarily this diversion would have worked; but not this time. Turning to her father with a pout, Starry soon pointed at the filly. "Daddy, wanna doggy!" Starry exclaimed, crossing her arms in a huff. Now, in any other situation, Flash would have laughed at this point given the look on his daughter's face. Unfortunately though, Flash had to stop his daughter's tirade before it got any worse.

"Starry, no," Flash told her firmly, as he led the toddler away from the scene to a patch of grass near Sugar Cube Corner. "You're only 2 years old. You're not getting a dog." Sitting her down on a patch of grass, though, Starry just continued to pout.

"She gets wan," Starry whined, pointing at the same filly.

Flash sighed. "Yes," Flash tried to explain patiently, "and she's five," he continued gently, "Not two, Star." He looked over at her with the same stern face. "It's still no Starry," Flash told her, seeing her pouting look staring back at him.

Starry pouted again, her face getting redder in the process. "I. WANNA. DOGGY!" Starry screaming, getting up and stomping her hoof.

This was going to far. It was time to end this tantrum, once and for all.

"Starry, stop it!" Flash exclaimed sternly, with a firm look towards his bad tempered little filly. "If you keep going like this, you will never get one. Do you understand me?: Flash asked determinedly, leading Starry to suddenly stop screaming and look at her daddy with a pout. She knew from her daddy's tone of voice that he meant it, so staying quiet, she gave a nod.

"Good," Flash said. "Now Starry, you're too young for a dog, and you won't get one until you're older. If you keep this up, though, mummy and I may never let you get one."

"I dun wan that," Starry pouted, tears filling her little eyes.

"I know you don't sweetheart. So be a good little filly and you will alright?" Flash asked gently. Starry nodded, tears streaming out of her eyes.

"Oh sweetie, don't cry," Flash said, pulling his daughter into a hug. Starry sniffled. "You wanna play with Pepper?" Flash asked her. Starry nodded.

"But, mummy say no play with Peppy," she said.

"I think she'll make an exception," Flash replied, putting Starry on the ground for her to go and play with Pepper. Flash sat on the grass as he watch Pepper playfully nudge Starry's side.

Starry was half asleep by the time Flash opened the doors to the castle, and as he walked up to the private chambers. Twilight looked up from the book she was reading on the couch. One glance at the half asleep Starry on Flash's back made Twilight awestruck.

"How did you manage to do that?" Twilight asked him.

"I'll explain later," he told her with a smile. "But I think someone would like to tell you something."

Starry looked up from her father's back and looked at her mother with an apologetic look.

"I sorry," Starry said sincerely, making Twilight's heart melt at the look on her daughter's face, before she smiled tenderly.

"It's alright sweetie, I forgive you," Twilight said as she walked up and nuzzled her daughter. Starry yawned sleepily, before quickly falling asleep on top of her father's furry back.

"Guess I should get her to bed," Flash said, kissing Twilight.

"You go do that," Twilight replied. Flash smiled. He walked down the hallway to Starry's room and set her on her bed.

"Night Star," Flash said, giving her a light kiss on her forehead.
