~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Trent High School: Onyx's POV~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Random thoughts crossed my head as I walked down the hallways of my high school. I was heading towards the main entrance to continue my journey home, when I heard a voice calling me from behind:
"Onyx! Wait up!" She called. Not this again....
"For the last time Victory, fuck off!" I shouted as I ran out the door, letting the cold wind of winter inside and headed towards a nearby forest instead of my home. This girl, Victory, she was my ex. A very clingy ex. You know what she did? She left me for another guy, (his name was Oden by the way,) but Oden, being a smart guy, left the bitch out in the cold due to her reputation. And now, here she was again, asking me to give her another chance.
"How many times do I have to say that I'm sorry?!" She yelled as she chased me down the road.
"None! I already told you, I am not going out with you again!" I kept running for a long while, the concrete road was now completely gone, replaced by a thin layer of snow that covered the grass below my feet. Ugh... It's so fucking cold.... I though to myself as I shivered in response to the low temperature around me. On the bright side, Victory was long gone, for now at least...
The Everfree forest was one of my favorite places to be in, so I went there almost every day, dispite the fact that no one else dared to approach it, but that's what made it special. On some occasions, I would map out some of the forest, and I would keep all of the maps inside of my backpack. Oh shit, that's right! I thought as I took off my backpack and took out a thin folder that contained all of the maps I had drawn.
"Let's see.... Okay, I think I am on the top right side of the forest.... no wait, lower left?" I talked to myself quietly as I went over map after map, but in the end, I couldn't find my location. "Well shit... I better start walking then." I resumed to move as some snow slowly started to fall down from above. Snow? This is starting to get worse by the second... I walked and walked and walked some more, but I saw nothing other than trees and snow. The snowfall started to become heavy, making it hard to see my surroundings, but for just a second, I swore I saw a dim orange light in the distance, but just as suddenly as it showed up, it was gone. A light? Is there someone else here? Curiosity killed the cat, but I didn't care. I tried to run in the direction of the light, but there wasn't any sign of it anywhere.
"Is someone out there?!" I yelled trough the snow, making my voice sound more like a whisper than anything. Then, I heard a soft chime ring answer my call. Suddenly, I was surrounded by three different colored candle flames: A blue light that made me feel sad just by looking at it, A green light that made me feel sick with even just a glance, and a red light, which somehow made me even more afraid than I already was when I looked at it. What is this, some kind of RPG trial?
I stood in the cold, wondering what choice I would make:
Choose Your Destiny
The Blue Flame
I chose the blue flame, thinking that maybe being sad was better than being afraid or sick. I followed the light, causing all three flames to dissapear at once. Suddenly, I was standing in the middle of a brick road in the middle of the forest, snow was nowhere to be seen. Then, the blue flame came back. "Come with me, for now, it is time to test your emotional strenght." I heard it whisper in my ear.
"Whoa, what the hell!?" I asked, clearly surprised. I mean, you don't usually hear fire talking to you, so I was pretty shocked. The flame didn't answer, but instead started floating down the road. "Hey! Wait up!" I caught up to it slightly after I said that. The sun went down almost instantly, but no moon came out. Everything was now dark, the blue flame being the only source of light.
"Prepare yourself, for the trial has started." It spoke. I kept walking close behind the flame, there was an eerie silence filling the air around me. The blue flame stopped for a few seconds, and then it started to float away from the road. I followed it carefully, making sure to keep a safe distance.
A few seconds into the walk, I noticed some human-like figures floating in the air, making me become more and more nervous as time went by. We approached the figures slowly, making the darkness dissapear, leaving behind something far worse than shadows behind. I looked up at the floating figure in disbelief, tears started to run down my cheeks. I was looking straight into the lifeless eyes of my Mother, she was not floating, but instead being held up by a long noose that was hung from the tall trees. The blue flame suddenly grew in size tremendously, lighting up the whole world. For every tree in the forest, there was another person hung from it. My mom, my dad, my grandparents, my entire family, all of my friends. Every single one of them, dead. I fell to my knees and cried in silence, still staring at everyone around me, when I saw something different: there was a tree with an empty noose, my name written on it in golden letters.
"It's time to decide Onyx: Join your friends, or keep going alone." The flame told me. I stood up and stared directly at the flame. I wiped the tears off my eyes and spoke:
"You know, I've played RPG games before, and I know damn well that this is a goddamn illusion. Lead the way you blue shit!" I said as the flame turned into a blue door.
"Congratulations Onyx, you have beaten the trial of sadness. You may now go back to your world." The door spoke as it opened itself, revealing nothing but darkness. I took a step foward into the depths of the door, and then I felt my body fall into a dark pit.
The Red Flame
I chose the red flame, thinking that maybe being afriad of something would be better than being sad or sick. I followed the light, causing all three flames to dissapear at once. Suddenly, I was standing in the middle of a brick road in the middle of the forest, snow was nowhere to be seen. Then, the red flame came back. "Come with me, for now, it is time to test your courage." I heard it whisper in my ear.
"Whoa, what the hell!?" I asked, clearly surprised. I mean, you don't usually hear fire talking to you, so I was pretty shocked. The flame didn't answer, but instead started floating down the road. "Hey! Wait up!" I caught up to it slightly after I said that. The sun went down almost instantly, but no moon came out. Everything was now dark, the red flame being the only source of light.
"Prepare yourself, for the trial has started." It spoke. I kept walking close behind the flame, there was an eerie silence filling the air around me. The red flame stopped for a few seconds, and then it started to float away from the road. I followed it carefully, making sure to keep a safe distance.
A few seconds into the walk, I heard some ravens sing above my head, giving me a horrid sense of dread. Suddenly, their dark singing was replaced by the roar of a chainsaw coming up behind me. I turned around in shock and saw that a tall, fat man with a pig mask was holding up a chainsaw above my head.
"AH!!!" I screamed as I jumped to the side, barely missing the attack from the man. He looked at me straight in the eye and laughed deeply and started walking towards me. "Fuck off!" I shouted as I started to run away. Of course, just like Victoria, he chased after me. Unlike Victory however, he was holding a fucking chainsaw!
"Get back here you little piggy!" He said as he swung at me with the weapond in his hands.
"It's time to decide Onyx: Run for eternity, or face your fears." The flame told me. I stopped running and looked at the flame. I popped my knuckles and spoke:
"You know, I've played RPG games before, and I know damn well that this is a goddamn illusion. Let's fight you fat shit!" I said as the man dissipated into the air, and the red flame tunred into a door.
"Congratulations Onyx, you have beaten the trial of fear. You may now go back to your world." The door spoke as it opened itself, revealing nothing but darkness. I took a step foward into the depths of the door, and then I felt my body fall into a dark pit.
The Green Flame
I chose the green flame, thinking that maybe being disgusted by something would be better than being afraid or sad. I followed the light, causing all three flames to dissapear at once. Suddenly, I was standing in the middle of a brick road in the middle of the forest, snow was nowhere to be seen. Then, the green flame came back. "Come with me, for now, it is time to test the power of your stomach." I heard it whisper in my ear.
"Whoa, what the hell!?" I asked, clearly surprised. I mean, you don't usually hear fire talking to you, so I was pretty shocked. The flame didn't answer, but instead started floating down the road. "Hey! Wait up!" I caught up to it slightly after I said that. The sun went down almost instantly, but no moon came out. Everything was now dark, the green flame being the only source of light.
"Prepare yourself, for the trial has started." It spoke. I kept walking close behind the flame, there was an eerie silence filling the air around me. The green flame stopped for a few seconds, and then it started to float away from the road. I followed it carefully, making sure to keep a safe distance.
A few seconds into the walk, I caught a foul scent coming from the shadows around me. Suddenly, the green flame grew in size, lighting up my surroundings. I took a moment to analyze the landscape before me. There was naked bodies of my my family and friends, lifeless and rotting, some even being eaten by hungry vultures. Guts were scattered all over the ground, the ground was full of small blood puddles, and the air was filled with such a strong scent of rot, that my eyes started to water. It was hard not to puke at the disgusting sight before me, but I somehow managed to keep my stomach intact. I was able to hear the vultures chew the meat of my relatives, making me cringe horribly in response. This hell-like landscape was designed to make me lose all sense of sanity, but then I remembered something important, and the green fire talked to me.
"It's time to decide Onyx: Spend your entire life in dwelling in the rot, or leave all of your relatives behind, only to be devoured." The flame told me. I rubbed the tears from my eyes and looked at the flame. I coughed my knuckles and spoke:
"You know, I've played RPG games before, and I know damn well that this is a goddamn illusion. Let's get out of here already!" I said as the green flame tunred into a door.
"Congratulations Onyx, you have beaten the trial of Disgust. You may now go back to your world." The door spoke as it opened itself, revealing nothing but darkness. I took a step foward into the depths of the door, and then I felt my body fall into a dark pit.
End Of Trials.
"AGH!!!" I yelled in pain coming from my chest. My eyes opened in shock, revealing a black lady in front of me. Was that trial a dream? I thought in confusion.
"Do not move yet child, for the pain is far from mild." I heard the woman say. She was wearing like six golden chains on her neck and around three golden bracelets on each hand. She was wearing a long, white dress, slightly transparent, allowing me to see her beautiful figure, as well as her undergarments, causing me blush slightly. I was now laying down on a wool bed inside of a weird room with bottles full of different liquids and plants on shelves. There was also a huge calduron in the middle of the room.
"W-who are you?" I asked as I winced from the devastating pain.
"My name is Zecora you see, but I wonder, who might you be?" She answered as she rubbed a light grey substance on my chest, causing me to wince again. Why is she rhyming?
"The name's Onyx, it's really nice to meet you, but could you tell me where I am?" I asked as I tried to forget the horrible things that I had just experienced.
"I'll anwser yor question if it'll put you at ease, but first, try not to move much please." She answered in rhyme once again as she kept rubbing the weird ointment on my chest. "We are in a fearful place, many will agree, inside of my hut, in the depths of the Everfree."
"We're in the Everfree? I've never seen your home before, and I've been here before many times." I told her in confusion.
"Yes, I have seen you around, but you've always walked the through the outer bounds." She said as she started to put some bandages over my chest. "Altough, I have a question for you, what kind of trials has this forest made you pursue?" We talked for around an hour, I explained why I was in the forest in the first place and told her about the flame that I chose.
"Hmm, congratulations! Not many have survived that fate, but you should start head home, for it's getting late." She pointed at an owl clock she had on the wall, which read 8:37 PM.
Zecora helped me up from her bed and took me to the front door of her hut. When she opened the door, I saw that it was pitch black outside, and the snow was still pouring down. She offered to let me stay instead, but I declined her offer, so she walked with me to the edge of the forest. Once the concrete road was under our feet, she stopped walking.
"Zecora? Don't you want to come with me to eat dinner at my house?" I asked as I turned back and faced the lady that saved me from the cold.
"I'm afraid I can't leave my home that is the forest, but please make sure dine well and get some rest." She told me as she grabbed my hand and put a black pendant on my palm. "I have a feeling you will need this gem, please, take it as gift from a friend." I looked at the gem closely and realized it was an onyx gem, matching my name. I thanked her for everything she had given me with a hug, and let her dissapear into the depths of the forest.
I walked down the streets, crossing a few stop signs and finally reaching my home. I walked through the front door and was greeted by my worried parents. I simply smiled at them and told them I was hanging out with some friends, making their worry dissapear. I went into my room and locked the door, dropping my backpack on the floor. I jumped on my bed, and started to reflect on the adventures of my day. Questions ran back and forth through my head: What were those flames? Why haven't I ever heard of Zecora before? Why won't Victoria stop bugging me? Sometimes, I feel like my questions will never be answered. After some time of thinking, I headed out of my room, had a nice dinner, and went to sleep straight after. Luckly, it was Friday, so I didn't have to worry about school tomorrow.
