Easter, his mother, had died to sickness years ago. Sarah, his older sister, killed in the line of duty. And John his father, in his grief, took his own life.

Cyrus fell into depression, his life into ruin, and had turned to drinking in order to keep his sadness at bay.

One night, while walking home from the bar, he hears a tune, one his mother sang to him all the time as a child. When he goes in search of the source of this tune, he finds a portal to Equestria, and is given a choice from an unseen voice.

Stay in this world and try to continue his life, or travel to Equestria and attempt to start a new one.

With no living family and his friends driven away in his anger and grief, he goes through the portal...
