To Ease a Troubled Mind
The first day is always hard and always more exhausting than it should be. Especially when you have all honors classes and they expect miracles to happen immediately with the assignments they pass out. Twilight already has an essay paper due in five days and an outline for a project in three weeks. For the start of a school year, that is setting expectations a little high. Twilight even spoke with the dean and asked if she could do anything to change it. Dean Celestia simply said that a teacher's curriculum was their own and would form it accordingly and expressed that she had the upmost faith in Twilight's talents. It's not that Twilight did not trust her talents it was just that expectations are a little high if an essay is due in two days. It was no problem for her, but for others it could be a problem. Twilight has always been one to show that she cared about he well fair of her fellows. It slightly pissed her off was what it did, keeping in mind she already finished the essay and has a rough outline of the research project.
Twilight let out a sigh as she leaned her head against the car window, exhausted from the brainpower she had to expend the first day of school. She heard a chuckle as one of her dearest friends, Rainbow Dash commented, "Geez it looks like someone took you out back and beat the snot out of you."
Twilight added, "Yeah I feel like it too."
"That rough huh?"
Twilight rolled her eyes at the thought of her day, "You don't even know the half of it."
"I can imagine." Rainbow Dash chuckled, paying close attention to the road in front of them. Twilight looked out of the corner of her eye at her friend. Eyeing the familiar tomboy she has known for the past couple years.
Rainbow Dash was a good friend, very loyal and very friendly despite how rough and tough she'll appear to be, especially when she was dressing like she was today. Like she was going to practice kick boxing at a local gym, tight gym shorts that hugged her thighs and a sports bra, covering her chest but leaving her stomach bare. Though they went to the same school, they went to different classes, no offense to Rainbow Dash but she was just not for honor's classes. She had complete faith that she could most likely get straight A's in honors classes and do sports but she was one of those smart lazy students. Expended little energy to school and skidded by so she can practice her sports and get well enough grades for it.
They drove along in Rainbow's small black car. She had bought it a few months before and only recently put a down payment on it, Twilight knew this because she helped manage Rainbow Dash's money. She asked for Twilight's help because Rarity felt like ripping her hair out Rainbow Dash was so frustrating. But Twilight found something very rare in Rainbow Dash that is not usually found nowadays, a genuine smile. When Rainbow Dash smiled you knew something was amusing or funny, there was no misdirection or an ulterior motive when she said hi to a stranger or if she asked for directions. It was very strange but very refreshing.
Twilight played with the hem of her light blue shirt and paid no mind to the passing cityscape outside, normally she liked to watch the passing people and the skyscrapers that reached high in the sky. But her sense of wonder was gone that day as all she could think about was school. Twilight tried to change the topic and think of something other than school as they both made their way back to Twilight's house, "So how was your day?"
Rainbow Dash shrugged as she pulled the car to a fourway stop and said, "Not any more different than the usual. School sucks and I hate going to it and the people that go there, except you and the girls of course. I got a replacement teacher."
Twilight raised an eyebrow, "Replacement teacher?"
"Yeah," Rainbow Dash said as they drove on as the light turned green, "I was supposed to have Ms. Cheerilee but she quit for some reason and was replaced by this new chick...I think her name was...oh...Ms. Chrysalis? Something like that."
Twirling her fingers Twilight tried to find another subject to start and stop her mind from going to school, "Do you have any practice yet?"
Rainbow Dash answered, "No and thank god for that. Jesus, if I have to go to another parent coach meeting for sports I am going to slap a bitch."
Twilight chuckled and said, "Not before me."
Rainbow Dash raised her hands, "Fine fine, just this once Sparkle I am going to let you have first dibs on which bitch we are going to slap."
Twilight chuckled as she enjoyed their conversations of imposing physical harm on others, not that either of them would randomly walk up to a person and harm them. It was just something that they said, you aren't human unless you enjoy a little dark humor once in a while.
She glanced back at her friend again and kept her eyes on her. Twilight had to give Rainbow props, she looked great. Usually Twilight avoided thinking about these certain things but Rainbow Dash kept in good shape. Perhaps the best shape than any of her friends. She was very slim but had muscle and though Twilight would hate to admit it she had her eyes linger on her chest. They were average size, not too big not too small, squeezed tight by the sport's bra and the gym shorts. Her rainbow hair wild and yet maintained well. They pulled to a stop and Twilight looked out, in a slightly lighter mood. She saw the front of her family's apartment, it was relatively compact with the same cookie cutter front from the rest of them in town. A red bricked front and a standard interior nothing to boggled at, the same thing that Twilight has seen over and over. She was just glad to be home.
Twilight unbuckled her seat belt and got out of the car, grabbing her schoolbag on her way to stand up she slammed the door shut. She slung her bag over her shoulder and waited for her friend to exit her vehicle. The late summer air was cool and already was making way for autumn, Twilight was lucky that she remembered to keep the heat on in the apartment. With a little rumble the car turned off and Twilight saw Rainbow leave with nothing but a gym bag, which was not surprising considering she had a few rules of thumb. She tried as hard as she could to not come home with homework, and if she did she would procrastinate until the last moment, don't bring home your backpack unless you have homework, and perhaps her number one rule, don't try. Procuring her keys she put them in her gym bag and looked over the car for Twilight. Twilight lifted her head to the sky and said, "Finally."
Rainbow Dash smirked, "Don't think you're out of the nightmare yet, you still have to hang out with me for an entire evening."
Twilight said as they walked up to Twilight's house, "I would gladly shoulder that than anything else."
Rainbow Dash chuckled again as they walked up together. Twilight enjoyed moments like this, sharing a genuine laugh with Rainbow Dash. Digging into one of the pockets of her school bag she found her house key and held the cold metal in her hand as they stopped in front of the building. Rainbow Dash asked as she went to unlock the door, "So what has been happening with you and the girls?"
Twilight gasped as she had the key in the lock but did not turn it and looked Rainbow Dash straight in her deep violet eyes, "You mean...you mean you don't know?"
Rainbow Dash shrugged with a slight hint of aggravation in her voice, "What? You have to remember I was at softball most of the summer."
Twilight held up a finger and said, "Hold on."
She turned the key and pushed open the door and shut it behind her. Twilight called out, "Mom! Dad! Shining!...Cadence!"
No answers came which made them alone. Twilight nodded to Rainbow Dash and followed Twilight to the very corner of the house where Twilight had her room. The light was out and with a flick of the switch the room illuminated. Light violet painted walls and accented furniture. Bed on one wall, TV stand and TV at the other wall, dresser on the back wall. It was cozy for one or two people, simple enough to live in. Twilight set her bag down by the door and said turning to Rainbow Dash as she did the same with her gym bag, "Okay, you have to promise not to tell anyone about this."
Rainbow Dash rolled her eyes and said, "Promise."
Twilight continued, "Okay so...over the summer, Rarity and Applejack started to...you know...date."
Rainbow Dash raised an eyebrow, "Really? Rarity and Applejack?"
"Yep. Scout's honor." Twilight saluted.
"Are you sure we're talking about the same Rarity?" Rainbow asked.
Twilight nodded as she sat on her bed, "Yep. I know I was just as surprised when I first heard about it too. But I kind of warmed up to it as it went on, they really are a cute couple."
Rainbow sat next to Twilight and got in a more relaxed position, resting her hands against the back of her head and leaning against the wall. Twilight kept her eyes on Rainbow as she waited for an extended answer. When none came Twilight asked, "What do you think about it?"
Rainbow knit an eyebrow, "What do you mean?"
Twilight elaborated resting her head in her hand as it rested on her crossed knee, "I mean, do you support them?"
Rainbow Dash answered, "Of course I support them, they're my friends."
Twilight added, "No, I mean them as a couple."
"Oh," Rainbow chided idly, "Well, yeah of course I support them as a couple. Nice to know I'm not the only lesbian in the group."
Twilight gulped as she began to once again reflect on her indecisiveness of which gender she would prefer to date. She could never decide. She liked how emotional and open a woman was, but she also liked how strong and protective men are. She could not be bisexual, she felt as though that she would favor one over the other anyways. Rainbow Dash scoffed, "God, you still haven't decided yet?"
Twilight sat back up and straightened her skirt and answered with a slight blush, "What?"
Rainbow Dash scratched her eyebrows with her finger as she said, "Twi, you should have decided a long time ago. You're what, a junior now? You have this year and the next to really know what you like. Choose one."
There was silence as Twilight could not find the right words to say. Rainbow Dash asked, "Okay then, let me ask you this, what is your experience like so far? Have you been with both? Just one?"
Twilight thought about her answer as she tapped her finger against her lips. She definitely had an attraction to both but she just had to choose. She thought back a few years and until now, Twilight mused with a slight blush, "Well...I have had experience with men...that's about it..."
Awkward silence filled the room as Twilight waited for a snide answer from her tomboyish friend. She rubbed the back of her arm to try and make the situation feel better. Rainbow Dash raised her hands and said, "Then how can you say that you are willing to be with if you have not even dated one? Have you even kissed a girl?"
Twilight turned away, "That's a little private don't you thi-"
"Twilight, answer the damn question." Rainbow Dash pressured.
On one hand she wanted to stone face lie to her friend and be over with the conversation, but from what Twilight was picking up Rainbow Dash had scooted closer to Twilight. They were very close to one another and Twilight scooted away slightly and said, "Well...well no..."
Rainbow said, "Then how do you know which one to choose? And do you want to kiss a girl?"
Twilight shrugged uncomfortably, "Well...I...I guess I can't choose until I do."
Rainbow leaned in close and closed her eyes, Twilight pulled back and saw her turn her head slightly. Twilight asked with her blush only growing larger, "What are you doing?"
Rainbow Dash opened her eyes and said, "You are going to kiss a girl to find out which you prefer."
Twilight scooted to the edge of her bed and said, "I don't know...what if my-"
"Twilight, would you rather kiss me or a complete stranger?" Rainbow raised the question.
Twilight could definitely see her point in all of this and could understand her room for concern. Twilight had no idea where to look for someone who was just handing out free kisses. And Twilight could not shake the feeling that she had not thought of making out with Rainbow Dash before, if she ever would be a lesbian. Twilight tried not to dwell too much on the thought as it was her friend and she did not want to make this weird. It was better her than a complete stranger. Twilight uncrossed her legs and kicked off her shoes, taking a deep breath. Twilight shrugged still slightly uncomfortable, "Okay...I guess you're right."
Rainbow Dash nodded as she scooted close to Twilight's side, "I guess I am. And remember, this is just a kiss. Nothing else."
Twilight nodded, gulping down a lump of dread as she saw Rainbow lean in closing her eyes. Twilight swallowed once more to try and come to grips with what was about to happen. I haven't written TwiDash and I wanted to try it, see what I could do with it. Low and behold I did. I created a new series called, Afterschool Activities. Different clopfics with different pairings, just to break the chain once in a while. All set in the same setting and all taking place in the same school. An all girls school, and as you can see some embracing "All girls" a little bit too much.
